A Dynamic DiscoveryWhat can you buy with $7.6 million? Try the largest Tyrannosaurus rex
fossil available to date. This 40-foot long fossil better known as “Sue,” named after its discoverer paleontologist Sue Hendrickson, was unearthed on Aug. 12, 1990, on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation in South Dakota. It was unquestionably well maintained for its age, with a skull measuring roughly 5 feet in length. A dispute erupted over the land in which Sue was discovered, as several parties claimed rights to the enormous dinosaur’s bones. Many believed this find belonged in a museum, for all the world to see. Therefore, multiple donors and charitable organizations joined together
in 1997 to purchase Sue at a Sotheby’s auction on behalf
of Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History. The fossil’s safekeeping was
ensured, and Sue, teeth and all, can currently be found
resting comfortably in her home at the Field Museum.

Memories in the Making!
National S’mores DayAugust 10, 2018
The delightfully delectable papaya is a tropical fruit that is widely popular in Central America and Mexico, but can found in most markets when in season. It’s something one might dub “large and in charge.” Why? Several reasons. On average, a single papaya weighs roughly one pound, but obviously it can be much larger (or smaller). But a pound? That’s a decent-sized fruit right there. And it is fully in charge due to the massive health benefits the fruit offers. Here’s the short list:• The fruit’s flesh is easily digested since it contains a great deal
of soluble fiber. • It’s both cholesterol free and low calorie, and is packed with
Vitamin C — as in, just 61 grams of the fruit provides more than one’s recommended daily value of Vitamin C. That’s more than the average orange provides. Plus, it’s also loaded with folic acid and potassium.
• In addition, papaya has been used as naturally-occurring remedy for a variety of stomach ailments and conditions like ringworm. This is likely because it’s multifaceted, being analgesic with anti-parasitic and anti-inflammatory properties. With characteristics like this, it seems pretty logical to consider
incorporating papaya into your diet. So if you’re interesting in testing the proverbial papaya waters, here are a few things you should know:
• Green, hard papayas aren’t mature. Be sure not to eat the immature fruit raw, as its insides are toxic. The fruit is said to be ripe and ready with a skin that’s amber to orange and indents when you squeeze it gently. Remember the skin is totally inedible, too.
• It can be used in more than just fruit salads and smoothies. Papaya makes an excellent salsa ingredient, and can be used in all sorts of poultry and seafood dishes. Plus, papaya seeds can be substituted for peppercorns since the seeds are naturally a little spicy.
• Also note that some people are allergic to the milky coating inside a papaya, aka latex. So be extra cautious when handling for the first time. Otherwise, enjoy!

It i s wide ly
believed that the
French monk Dom
Pierre Pér ignon
invented champagne
on August 4, 1693.
However, this claim is likely
untrue, according to many
historians, as the English physician and
scientist Christopher Merrett is most
often given credit for the creation of
sparkling wine. Pérignon did, in fact,
make substantial strides in mastering
the technique of creating white wine
with red wine grapes, though. In his
wine-making, Pérignon tried to use
only natural ingredients while avoiding
re-fermentation, which actually caused
more bubbles to rise in the beverage.
One evening, following his creation of a
new batch of bubbly beverage, Pérignon
decided to taste it. He immediately
shouted out to those around him: “Come
quickly! I am drinking the stars.” This is
how the tall tale of Pérignon’s creation
came to pass at the Abbey of Hautvillers,
and word soon spread to neighboring
lands.
Are you male or female? The answer to this seemingly simple question can have a major impact on your health. While both sexes are similar in many ways, researchers have found that sex and social factors can make a difference when it comes to your risk for disease, how well you respond to medications, and how often you seek medical care. That’s why scientists are taking a closer look at the links between sex, gender, and health. Here's a list of quick facts and differences between men and women:• Women and men have different symptoms of heart attack.• Women are twice as likely as men to experience depression.• Men are less likely than women to admit to negative moods
and seek treatment for mental health issues.• Men are more likely than women to have gout, a type of
arthritis. Female risk for gout increases after menopause. • Osteoporosis is more common in women than men, yet it
still poses a risk to men as they age.• Some medicines affect women and men differently, such as
aspirin and some sleep medications.• Females are more likely to injure their knees playing sports.• Males are more likely than females to develop autism
spectrum disorders and certain other neurodevelopmental conditions.
• Two-thirds of people age 40 and up who are visually impaired or blind are women.
• Pain disorders like chronic TMJ are more common in women.• Women are often primary caretakers of children, household
needs, and aging family members, but they are more likely to delay their own health needs.
