About the College

Motto

Our Vision

Our Mission

Focus of the Seminar

St. Joseph College of Education is situated in the Kalakad - Nanguneri Road, Tirunelveli District, and is run by 'The Women and Child Development Society'. Kalakad is a small, beautiful, agriculturally fertile village, situated at the foothills of Western Ghats, away from all hustle and bustle of highways or cities. It is 70 kms away from the famous waterfalls Courtallam, 60 kms away from Kanyakumari, 20 kms away from Koonthankulam bird sanctuary and 40 kms away from Papanasam. Our college was established in 2006 and committed itself in the field of education from the academic year 2007-2008.

Though it is a self-financing institution, our college gives special privilege in admitting the socially and economically deprived rural educated poor young men and women who aspire to dedicate themselves for the cause of becoming good teachers by pursuing B.Ed. course. It is bestowed with wide greeneries, serene environment, modern well-equipped infrastructural facility, modern electronic gadgets that promotes quality teaching-learning atmosphere and above all qualified and dedicated band of staff to uphold the glory of the institution.

'Terras Irradient', a Latin phrase, which means 'Let them give light to the world'.

Our College intends to mould the prospective teachers with far sighted vision to face the challenges of the society, rooted in ethical values, living up to the cause of promoting social justice, liberty, equality and fraternity by developing a holistic personality.

Our College is committed to form leaders who are intellectually competent, emotionally intellectual, spiritually mature, morally upright, psychologically integrated, physically healthy, socially acceptable, God loving and who will champion the cause of justice, love, truth and peace and who are always open to further growth.

The success of a student depends mostly on the quality of the teachers from whom he/she learns. With the advent global and electro-accelerated reforms, raising the quality of teachers in par with the demands has become a major concern and challenge for the policy-makers, universities and colleges and this responsibility is burdened further on the colleges of teacher education, and the public in general. Every child deserves a quality teacher.

This seminar purports to contribute to the ongoing debates in the challenges and quality

of teacher education and create a new knowledge base that would provide a plausible solution

without sacrificing the concerns of all stake holders form different quarters. Numerous challenges

such as lack of uniformity among teacher education institutions, sub-standard educational name-

sake, but profit-making institutions, huge capitations that keep the common man out of the

temples of learning, incompetent teacher educators resulting in deficiency of scholarly teaching,

growing indifferent attitude of the students with consumerist thinking, providing quality and

sufficient human and material resources, exploitation, traditional curricula, inadequate duration

of the training programme, proliferation of colleges of education, memory-testing examination

system, haphazard and hasty started-and-ended teacher education programme, insufficient co-

curricular activities, subjective evaluation pattern, Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), State Eligibility

Test (SET), virtual teaching, teacher-less learning programmes, privatization and globalization of

education, autonomy of educational institutions, changing role of teachers, innovative practices in

teacher education, ethical issues and professional ethics in teacher educations are ahead for the

teacher education.

To brace up a fight against this humpty number of challenges and reach the success is not

going to be an ice-cream chewing for many; rather a path of daunting challenges. Attending the

seminar would benefit teacher educators, students, researchers, policy-makers and anyone who

is interested in teacher education.
