Cathi Cox-Boniol

ACHIEVE Coordinator, Lincoln Parish Schools Ruston, Louisiana

Cathi Cox-Boniol is an extraordinary science and STEM educator at the school, district, regional, state, and national level. Pearson and NSELA celebrate her outstanding leadership in science education since 1981. Louisiana Life Magazine named her one of the 2015 Louisianians of the Year as an education activist who has increased interest in STEM education by linking specific organizations, businesses, and institutions to school efforts. Ms. Cox-Boniol left a 17-year secondary science career at Choudrant High School in 1998 to become the Site Coordinator for Louisiana Tech University's Project LIFE before moving into the Program Coordinator position for CATALyST, the university’s Center for Applied Teaching and Learning to Yield Scientific Thinking. Now forging community-based partnerships as coordinator for Lincoln ACHIEVE, she initiated the region’s premiere STEM program in partnership with Louisiana Tech where she also serves on the Advisory Board for the nationally recognized UTeachTech program. Cathi founded New Tech @ Ruston, an award-winning 21st Century learning environment based around innovation, project-based learning, and integrated technology. The co-author of three teaching engineering guides, Cathi currently serves as the Louisiana Director for ITEEA’sEngineering by Design Consortium. A pioneer in the area of online learning, she has facilitated classes at the local, state, and national level for more than two decades. Her pursuit of educational excellence has garnered Cathi numerous accolades including Louisiana's High School Science Teacher of the Year, The Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching, and The Radioshack/Tandy Technology Scholars Outstanding Teacher Award. Selected to the inaugural New Tech Directors National Advisory Board, she was also recognized nationally with the Golden Achievement Award of Excellence for her work with ACHIEVE. Listed among Delta Style Magazine’s “Sweet Sixteen” Most Influential Women, Cathi was honored with the national Kappa Delta Sorority Order of the Pearl Award for her prominence in professional and civic service at the national, state, and local level. Named the recipient of the Betty Robbins Volunteer of the Year Award, she was also honored with the Delta Sigma Theta STEM Award for her work. Appointed to the Louisiana Workforce Commission by Governor Mike Foster, Cathi was also named by Louisiana Superintendent of Education John White to serve on the state’s Louisiana Believes Advisory Committee. Selected for Louisiana’s LPB STEM Forum, she was honored in Baton Rouge with the Claudia Fowler Distinguished Service to Science Education Award and Selected for Louisiana’s LPB STEM Forum, she was honored in Baton Rouge with the Claudia Fowler Distinguished Service to Science Education Award and recognized by the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association as a “Leader to Watch” in the March 2016 issue of Technology and Engineering Teacher magazine. Cathi holds both B.S. and M.S. degrees from Louisiana Tech University with extensive post-graduate work completed in science and science education. She is married to Tom Boniol and when not traveling, they are busy community advocates actively serving Louisiana Tech University, Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, Wellspring Alliance for Families, North Central Louisiana Arts Council, United Way of Northeast Louisiana, and other service initiatives. A quote from Cathi’s nominator for the award summarizes her incredible leadership: “I truly believe that while Cathi’s efforts on behalf of science education and educators may have been matched by some they have been surpassed by none. She is a gift to science education.” NSELA and Pearson are proud to honor Cathi’s incredible leadership and her passion for nurturing other science education leaders.

Outstanding Administrative Support Award

This prestigious award recognizes and honors an outstanding administrator who, through their professional work, has demonstrated exemplary support for science education at the school, district, and/or county level. This award honors an administrator whose primary responsibility is outside the area of science instruction. The award is presented at the NSELA luncheon held at the annual NSELA Professional Development Institute. The award is accompanied by a check for $1,000 and a plaque donated by Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company.

Dr. Linda Atkinson Associate Director for K12 and STEM Partnerships, K20 Center

University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma Linda Cole Atkinson is an incredible leader who has provided exemplary administrative science and STEM support locally, state-wide, and nationally. For the past 12 years at the University of Oklahoma, she has been in an administrative capacity to support and advocate for science and STEM education. Dr. Atkinson has used her strong science background to seek funding for projects to assist schools and to sustain the progress made in science education in Oklahoma. Her focus provides systemic support for all stakeholders involved in improving science education. Prior to her work at the university, Linda taught high school chemistry and eighth grade science, worked as an assistant principal at two schools, and was the science curriculum director for Norman Public Schools. Over forty years of work in different roles, she continually inspires other educators. In one of her support letters, the writer states “Linda is a gifted leader. Her calm, measured approach to leadership involves empowering others to do their best work to make great things happen. She is a master of encouragement and makes each person who works for her feel important.”

Dr. Atkinson is doing outstanding work in her administrative support role at the University of Oklahoma. Three of many examples illustrate her long-term leadership.

Led the development of a state-wide competitive grant program for K12 schools that provides technology equipment and professional development to create technology-enriched learning communities. Through 17 million dollars in grant money from the Oklahoma Educational Technology Trust, the project has impacted 6,448 teachers and 93,940 students in 229 schools across the state of Oklahoma from 2003-2015.

Coordinates the K20 Center’s Annual Innovative Learning Institute which brings together over 700 educators, university faculty, business leaders, and policy makers to learn and share best practices through the eight strands, including leadership, authentic teaching, technology integration, STEM connections, college and career readiness and community connections.

Obtains grant funds that are utilized to research the design, delivery, and impact of systemic reform in developing technology-enriched professional learning communities with emphasis in STEM areas. The funding supported increases in teacher efficacy, teacher content knowledge and use of inquiry, and students’ science interest and learning on classroom and state assessments.

During her work in Norman Public Schools, Dr. Atkinson established structures for teachers and school leaders to collaborate about best practices, participate in shared leadership and decision-making, and support each other in improving science education for all students. Some examples that illustrate Dr. Atkinson’s accomplishments as science coordinator included establishing teacher advisory boards that met monthly; providing ongoing professional development and one-on-one support, coaching and mentoring for all science teachers; establishing a leadership cadre of elementary science teachers; establishing a district-wide science materials center; and providing state-wide leadership on Oklahoma standards and assessment committees.

Linda provided outstanding leadership on the NSELA Board for many years including the roles of an extended presidency, newsletter editor, and awards committee chair. She’s served on the following: National Science Board STEM Commission on 21st Century Education, leadership team for NSTA’s Alliance of the Affiliates, NSTA’s professional development committee, and the advisory committee for NSTA’s journal, The Science Teacher. Linda has presented on a variety of topics at many conferences and co-authored numerous articles for journals and books. Her awards include: NSTA 2009 Distinguished Service to Science Education Award, American Educational Research Association and the University Council for Educational Administration 2005 David L. Clarke Award, and Oklahoma Science Teachers Association 1996 Jack Renner Distinguished Science Educator Award.

NSELA and Kendall Hunt are proud to present this award to Dr. Linda Atkinson. Her leadership and administrative support continue to inspire and motivate educators in science and other STEM disciplines

Kathy DiRanna NSELA's 2015 Outstanding Leader in Science Education Awardee

Kendall Zoller ”The Choreography of Presenting”

And More!!

NSELA Summer Leadership Institutes (SLI) are a different kind of professional development experience.

Compared to a national or statewide conference, the SLI has a smaller variety of topics and speakers, but

participants have the opportunities to go “deeper” into each topic and are offered repeated opportunities to

talk to the presenters over the three days. The format includes general sessions and some smaller break-

outs.

The 2016 SLI theme, “Leadership in a Sea of Change,” builds on “The Sounds of Change." SLI strands in

San Diego will include: Understanding the Change Process; Building a Culture for Change; and, Making

Decisions Based on Evidence.

Extend your stay and take advantage of the optional field trips. Make it a family vacation. Visit the zoo,

Legoland, Sea World, and the beaches. The hotel is near the Trolley stop; the trolley takes you to historic

Old Town, to the Amtrak station, and much more!
