NATIONAL PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Howdy brothers and sisters. I want to start off by saying how relieved I am that brothers Craig Brutout and Jeff Woolf are alright. Craig was complaining of chest pain and went to the hospital and had quadruple bypass surgery just a couple weeks ago. During that same week Jeff had a small heart attack. Brother Chris Parks had already scheduled to have two stents replaced. So Winchester had a lot of worries in the month of January and I am glad that all made it through it. (I would like to know what kind of beer they drink that has so much cholesterol in it. LOL)

Back in May, my article was about heart health and I told the stories of the co workers that I lost and almost lost due to heart attacks. Due to the fast paced lifestyle, it is easy for us to eat out more often and that leads us to not eat healthier foods. A lot of us do not exercise like we should. And the fact that some of us are or are approaching an age that we are no longer young, and we think that pain in the arm or neck is a sign of getting old. These pains could be signs of a heart problem.

One of the common warning signs of a heart attack is chest pain. This may spread to the arm, neck, or jaw, with a feeling of tightness, burning, squeezing, fullness, or heaviness in the chest. Also chest discomfort with fainting, lightheadedness, nausea, shortness of breath, or sweating. Brothers and sisters, this is an issue that means a lot to me. Heart problems affect male and female alike. We cannot ignore these signs when they accrue. Go to the doctor and have them check it out. Its better to be safe than sorry. All of you are important to me and I don’t want to lose you to a heart attack. Go to the American Heart Association www.heart.organd learn more. I will now get off my soap box.

I would like to thank all the chapters that participated in the Steeple Chase weekend that we did back in January. I would also like to thank Jeff Woolf for his great organization of the event. I hope that this could be an annual event.

A Better YearChris Parks

National Master of Ceremonies

Hello Broth-ers and S w e e t -hearts! 2013 is finally here! Jacki and I have decided this has to be a better year after the one we just had. As most of you know, we had quite a time with her dad Brother Lee Stonerock with the cancer then having his leg ampu-tated. We also had Brother Vergil Stonerock pass away, then to top off the year, a week before Christ-mas we had one of our two month old twin granddaughters in the hospital with RSV for five days. We get her home and her sister contracts it and she’s in the hospi-tal for two days. What a year; glad it’s over!

I think it’s time for a vacation. We’re thinking River Ranch for starters, then maybe a couple of days over to St. Pete might just do the trick. A trip to the south to visit our Brothers and Sweetheart always sounds good especially when we have a foot of snow on the ground and 15 degrees out-

Greetings Broth-ers and Sweet-hearts,

We are deep in the midst of win-ter here in the north, and it has already been a much colder and snowier winter than the last. I hope all are staying warm and cozy. February for me means Indiana Basketball, which has become fun to watch again, and wrestling, with a grandson wrestling college, a second grandson on a varsity high school team and a son-in-law a varsity coach. That consumes a lot of my time. I am not complaining, mind you, just explaining. I truly enjoy both.

Sam AgrestiNational Vice President

Hello to all and a Happy New Year. I re-cently at-tended the Fl Nu officer initiation and it went well. The feeling I got was 2013 is going to be a good year in PDK land. I challenge all new offi-cers to work hard to reap the bene-fits this fraternity has to offer. The SEC will work as well to promote brotherhood, community service involvement, leadership, and growth in membership. The first half of the year is always busy with installation banquets of new chapter officers and sweetheart balls to rec-ognize individual chapter sweet-hearts.

The south has a couple of annual activities such as River Ranch in Februar. Fl Nu has the annual Luau party in March and in April we have Southern District and Spring SEC this year. The southern chap-ters are working hard to attend as much as possible other chapter functions, showing true brother-hood. I would like to be able to say I have seen all the chapters and attended a function there. This my goal in the upcoming time I have in SEC. Let everyone know what is going on in your area and this way new brothers can see first hand why they joined. I am hoping to pro-mote the National Museum more because it is the heart and soul of this great organization. We always welcome our brothers from the north to get out of the cold and join us here in sunny Florida when-ever they can.

side. That’s the life of living up north.

So how are things going in the fraternity? Well, I wrote an article awhile back on a growth plan for our chapters and I never thought I’d be writing that our Brothers at Flor-ida Mu took it to heart and sur-passed it with the addition of three new Brothers! That is a major ac-complishment for them! I would like to personally congratulate them! Keep up the good work. By building your chapter, you’re help-ing to build the fraternity. Brothers follow Mu’s example: ten percent growth by July! In the end, we will benefit.

“How will my actions today re-flect on our fraternity tomorrow?”

To our National Sweetheart Diana Dull, hope to see you soon here in the south and have a great time at your sweetheart dance. 2013 will be as good as we make it and nothing short of fantastic should be what every PDK brother believes. Proud to be a Phi Delt. National Vice President Sam Agresti

February is also the time of year we honor our sweethearts on Val-entine’s Day. Be sure to tell your valentine how much she means to you. There is a country song cur-rently playing that has a line “ overuse I love you. “ That senti-ment makes a lot of sense to me. You can never tell someone too many times that you love them. A constant reminder only strength-ens the bond you share and di-minishes any doubts. Go tell them now. I will still be here when you get back. Even if it is tomorrow.

Much the same can be said about the brotherhood we share as a fraternity. Each time a new member is initiated, we re-affirm our own vows. This can only fan that spark that made us want to be Phi Delts in the first place. Re-committing to the oath of brother-hood and goodwill for our broth-ers. Attend as many meetings and initiations as you are able, and you may find a reason to be even more involved in what your chap-ters are doing. One of the truest expressions is “ You reap what you sow.” Extend your hand and make all your brothers feel wel-come, and they in turn will re-spond with a smile that will warm your heart. It is an easy task and you can make a difference in someone else’s day and your own as well.

Maybe by the next magazine, spring will have sprung and all our spirits lifted. Until then, stay safe and warm. Kiss your sweet-heart and hug a brother when you can.

Welcome from the Hospital-ity Chap-ter It’s hard to believe that the New Year is well u n d e r -way. February brings with it Groundhog Day when our Indiana Chapters are hoping for an early spring so that they may put away their snow shovels. Florida chap-ter are asking, what are snow shovels? MS Alpha is stuck in the middle and just wants to see green grass and BBQ season.

Then comes Valentine’s Day when our chapters honor their SweetHearts who have given many hours of dedication and support. I want to thank our Na-tional Sweetheart Diana Dull who is doing an outstanding job and making a difference for Phi Delta Kappa in many ways. No wonder she’s not only a girlfriend to all, but a true Sister.

Then it’s President’s Day when we honor President Washington and President Lincoln. These Presidents shaped this country to what it is today, much like the founding fathers of the PDK. Who knew that it takes integrity and the will to make sacrifices for the greater good of the organiza-tion? Like our nation the PDK is still changing and evolving into an organization more charitable in nature. We all still have a great time, now we know that true

brotherhood starts in our commu-nity. I welcome all brothers and sisters to feel free to write letters for the PDK Magazine. Let us know what is going on in your chapter house or a story you re-member and want to share!

I look forward to River Ranch and visiting with Florida Alpha Lambda, Florida Mu, and Florida Nu and all others who attend. Like Brother Chris from FL-NU would say, I bet ya’ll up north would like to trade weather ‘bout now! Come on down and thaw out. Florida Nu will warm your soul.

Remember, if it is to be it is up to me! Proud to be a Phi Delta! God Bless America!

Hello from the flagship of the south,I know in January that we have the privilege to install new chapter offi-cers. I want to personally thank them for having the cour-age to do what we all must do to ensure that each chapter grows and in turn the fraternity as a whole. I remember when I was first asked to sit in a chair, I thought NO-WAY, but I was also proud that my brothers thought enough about me to trust

I write to you this m o n t h while the o u t s i d e I n d i a n a t empera -ture is in the teens. It seems like not too long ago we were complaining about the heat. You just have to love the climate changes that we get in the great state of Indiana, or complain about them or you move. We did receive some significant snow fall.

While I was out shoveling the beautiful white blanket off my driveway I thought of my grand-dad. He always used to tell me “The Good Lord put that snow where he wanted it and He will make it go away someday”. I smile when I think of the times I was able to spend with my Grand-dad. He was pushing 40 when my mom was born. Heck, some people are grandparents when he fathered his first and only child. He was semi-retired and able to spend lots of time with my brother and me. He was at our house when we got off of the school bus. He would make sure my brother and I did not burn the house down and got our home-work done. If we had practice, he would drive us there. My grandma was still working and we would pick her up every weekday from work, she never had the de-sire to drive so she never did.

Plymouth High School baseball games would not be missed. But high school basketball was his love. He and Grandma had sea-son tickets right behind the scorer’s bench. They had these seats at the old Centennial Gym and when Plymouth built the new gym he was given the same seats. Granddad was one of those guys who always kept score on the pro-vided scorecard (remember those). He would check his card with the official scorekeeper at half time to see if the scorekeeper had made any mistakes.

He was able to see many great ball players in his day. His favor-ite was a guard and Indiana All Star Steve Phillips. Granddad was a janitor at the high school and would let Steve into the gym early to practice his shooting. Granddad sometimes would re-bound for him and just hang out. Steve went on to play for Indiana State.

I remember being about 12 or 13 and riding down to Hinkle Field-house in Indianapolis to watch a Butler and ISU game. Granddad was always early to sporting events. We found our seats and sat down to watch ISU warm up. Granddad says “Shoot, I don’t see Steve I just don’t see him. Do you?” Just then he hears a famil-iar laugh at the same time he was getting a tap on his shoulder. It was Steve. He saw us enter the gym and wanted to surprise granddad so he hid and waited for us to sit down. He came down from the bleachers above us to say hi to Granddad. They sat and chatted for quite some time. I

that even I couldn't screw it up, at least not that much. Just remember to have patience and encourage them. They will do a fine job. I mean this in every chapter ,not just at FL-NU. Always be willing to help them, as much as you are able to. The more new brothers who are tasked with a challenge, and given the support to succeed, the stronger we become. And when the time is right, the National Chairs could be the next step.

Don't forget that February is SWEETHEART month. I hope that we all do something special for our own Sweethearts, but also for our National SWEETHEART, Diana Dull. Also in February we have River Ranch on the 22nd and 23rd. I know Florida Alpha Lambda will do a great job. Plus I will get an-other chance to visit with as many of my extended family as possible. Get there early and bring your golf clubs, fishing poles and your drink-ing hats. LOL Then in April we at FL-NU get the honor of hosting Southern District AND the Spring SEC meetings. They are on the 19th and 20th. Don't forget to reserve your spot on the chartered fishing boat on Thurs-day the 18th. Contact brother Ed Nault or myself for details. Jan and Kenny, see you there. More infor-mation about hotels and registration to follow. Whenever you get the chance to travel to another chapter, whether it be for a National event or just a social, just DO IT. You'll be rewarded with fellowship plus the chance to rekindle old friend-ships as well make new ones, with the memories that will last a lifetime. So are you a fan or an extinguisher ?

Hello From The SweetheartBy Diana Dull

Hello from the National Sweetheart, better known as “the girlfriend”. National Sweetheart Tour 2012(13) con-tinues! As I write this, a new

year has began. I do not make resolutions so I just strive to be better in the coming year. As I reflect over the past year I am hard pressed to find any regrets but I am over flowing with joys and bless-ings. The Lord has been good to me and my family and I am sure that many more good things are in store for us in 2013.

By the time you read this, we will have had a busy month. I hope that many of you joined us for the Chapter Chase as I am sure it will be a great time. I am so looking forward to seeing each of the chap-ters and getting a picture in front of them to put in my “Tour Al-bum”!! I forgot to get a picture in front of Mississippi Alpha so if one of you could photo shop me in one and send it to me, that would be great!! LOL!! I hope to get one at every chapter this year but not sure we will be able to do all of Florida. We are going to River Ranch, so we will catch Tampa, but will have to play the other two by ear. We also will have had Donny Baker at the Chapter House for Comedy Night. I have seen him live before so I can assure you that it will be a night filled with laughter and great times!! Of course, hanging with the Phi Delta Kappa Brothers and Sisters always insures a great time no matter what chapter you are at!! It will be Su-per Bowl time as well before you read this and I have high hopes for my Colts!!! Super Bowl or not for them, it has been quite a “Luck”y year!!

As you read this, I hope you have made plans to join us in Winches-ter for the National Sweethearts Dance! So cool that we have it at

really don’t know (but I could look it up) how many points Steve had that night, but I do know how it made my Granddad feel to be able to talk to his buddy.

Little gestures to Steve as a young ballplayer created a link that he and my granddad shared until his dying days. His favorite story was when Steve scored 8 points in just a few ticks of the clock. Steve made a lay-up and was fouled. He hit the free throw then stole the inbounds pass and hit the shot and got fouled again. He hit that free throw and stole the inbounds pass again. This time the other team was smart enough not to foul him. That scenario right there, my Phi Delt brothers and sweethearts, is how you can score 8 points in less than two seconds of a basketball game. I am so glad I have many fond memories of my family. I still think of my granddad and grandma every day of my life. They were and still are a pretty powerful influence in my life.

Beta Nu is having a membership decline that must be fixed. Emir and PNP Greg Sumpter compiled an idea that he has hashed out and presented to the active brothers. The Beta Nu Adventure Club is the idea and is in its infancy. Greg and the brothers have come up with several day or weekend activities to promote brotherhood and have a great time in the proc-ess. Some of the activities are as simple as attending existing events at other chapters. This will hope-fully help get our membership numbers headed in the right direc-tion. The question that always comes up from prospective mem-

bers is, “What do you guys do?” The Beta Nu Adventure Club can add a needed spice to the normal answer. Time will tell its effectiveness. I have heard and truly believe that if you do nothing, you will get nothing. Unfortunately we can prove that phrase to be true.

Now that the New Year is upon us, we look forward to what it brings. We hope and pray that it was better than last year. We hope and pray for safety and health to our family and friends. We hope and pray for our great nation. We hope and pray for peace and prosperity to the world (well, maybe not all countries).

Many chapters have a special night set aside to honor our sweethearts. Please take your sweetheart to one of these din-ners or better yet have your chapter host a Sweetheart Din-ner. We LOVE our ladies, right brothers? We show that we love them all year long, but brothers we need to step up our game in February.

I am proud to be a Phi Delt and hope to see you soon. Hug a brother and tell your sweetheart that you love her every single day.

our Chapter, but even cooler that I am the National Sweet-heart this year as well as out-going Co-Chapter Sweetheart, with the lovely Barb Berry!! I guarantee a great time and even better dancing!! The Dull Ranch will be booked full, just the way I like it. If you would like to just visit sometime give me a call and the maid will get the bunk-house ready for you. Oh wait that’s me, lol!! You might even find a chocolate on your pillow and a horse in your window!!! Anything is possi-ble.

Brothers, let me put a bug in your ear to treat your sweet-heart a little extra special this month. I am sure you will earn very big returns for your efforts. (Just trying to help out all my Phi Delta Kappa Sis-ters!!)

We are also planning to at-tend Gamma Theta’s Anniver-sary Party in February as well. So I believe that gives every-one three opportunities to hang out with the National Sweetheart in February. I hope I see you all at one of the events. As for where you will find me, I will be within arms length or at least eye-sight of my husband, my love and my heart, Scott Dull. I love you Babe!! Until next time, Happy Valentines!!

Convention 2013

By Jim Myers

July 17th to 21st 2013 Beta Nu will hold National Convention. I have heard someone saying that Courtyard by Marriott charges for their breakfast. I do not know what Courtyard does in other cities, but in Kokomo breakfast is included in the special price of $79.00 plus taxes rather than $99.00 plus taxes for Double and King Rooms. They only have two King Suites available normal for $149.00 each, but we will get them for $99.00 plus taxes. The breakfast has biscuits and gravy, sausage, bacon, pota-toes, waffles, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereals (hot or cold), eggs your way, juices and coffee.

Courtyard did state that only two breakfasts per room are included. Last summer, Courtyard had a Soccer team rent two rooms and had nine players in each. The next morning eighteen players wanted to eat a free breakfast. Therefore I was told that only two breakfasts per room are al-lowed.

The registration will be $120.00 per couple and $60.00 for single. More information about this year’s National Convention will be coming soon.

I hope to see you at convention this summer. I know we will have a great time. Please sign up early. The telephone number for the Courtyard is 765-453-0800 or you may email: [email protected].
