First-Ever GEA National Geothermal Summit Sparks Constructive Dialogue on Moving
Geothermal Forward
Press Release, Reno, Nev., August 18 — The GEA’s Inaugural
National Geothermal Summit culminated on Wednesday after two days
of intense discussions related to large scale exploration, equitable tax
treatment, reducing development times, funding science and education
needs and clearly defining geothermal’s intrinsic attributes and how the
industry should market that to potential off-takers. More than 300
policy and industry leaders gathered in Reno for a successful session
on moving utility scale geothermal energy forward despite challenging
issues facing the industry.
“The geothermal industry has the ability to provide a significant portion
of home grown energy to U.S. households but we need three things:
certainty from policy makers, permit streamlining, and constructive
partnerships between business and policy leaders to expedite the
process,” said GEA Executive Director Karl Gawell. “Megawatt for megawatt, geothermal employs four times as
many Americans as natural gas, and the industry is creating thousands of jobs, even as other industries suffer.
This means taking communities out of crisis and providing substantial revenue to local government.”
The GEA National Geothermal Summit discussed the outlook for Washington D.C. and the western states,
building new transmission projects in the west, new renewable energy policy developments in California, and
moving geothermal forward on public lands. Panelists

President Obama Announces New Assistant Secretary for DOE EERE
Last week, President Obama announced the nomination of David Danielson as assistant secretary for energy
efficiency and renewable energy. Peter Rothstein, president of the New England Clean Energy Council, said of
Danielson: “He’s got a good cross section of technical depth, but also understanding what it means to start up
new companies and try to break into new markets.”
Danielson’s bio, via the Energy Department: Dr. David Danielson has been a Program Director at the U.S.
Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) since 2009. Prior to joining
ARPA-E, Dr. Danielson was a clean energy venture capitalist at General Catalyst Partners, a Boston-based
venture capital fund. He co-founded the firm’s clean energy investment practice and helped build and grow
startups in various clean energy technology areas including solar power, wind power, advanced biofuels, bio-gas,
carbon capture and storage, and advanced lighting. Dr. Danielson is a co-founder of the New England Clean
Energy Council. He has authored more than 20 scientific articles in the field of advanced materials. While at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Danielson was the founder and President of the MIT Energy Club, and
was a founding Director of the MIT Energy Conference. For his work in building a strong multidisciplinary energy
community at MIT, he was awarded the Karl Taylor Compton Prize, MIT’s highest student award. Dr. Danielson
holds a B.S., summa cum laude, in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley,
and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from MIT.

Enel Green Power: Final Approval Received for Solar Project at Nevada Geothermal
Plant
Press Release, Reno, NV, August 12 — The 24 MW Nevada project is the world’s first of its kind hybrid plant —
Enel Green Power North America (EGPNA) received the final approval to move forward with the installation of its
Solar Photovoltaic project at its Stillwater Geothermal Plant in Churchill County. The new solar integration is
expected to generate an additional 24 MW of peak energy from the Stillwater solar facility. The combination of the
two renewable generation technologies at the same site not only improves the electrical production profile but
also allows making use of the same infrastructures, such as the interconnection power lines and operation
facilities, thus reducing the environmental impact.
"Clean energy means one thing for Nevada: jobs,” said Senator Harry Reid. “I have worked hard on policies and
incentives that have helped support this first-of-a-kind hybrid solar and geothermal plant in the United States. Enel
Green Power has wisely and successfully married two clean renewable energy resources that Nevada has in vast

abundance and provided many economic benefits to Churchill County as well as the entire state. I hope we will
see more of these integrated projects."
This project is unique to Enel Green Power’s (EGP) portfolio in that the plant will generate electricity using two of
the energy leader’s most technologically advanced systems. EGP not only inherits a strong century-old
geothermal tradition, being the pioneer of geothermal energy production in the world, but has a similar strength in
solar being a leader also in photovoltaic system integration. With the integration of the two technologies, this will
be the first renewable energy project in the USA that combines the continuous base load of the geothermal with
the peak capability of the solar which will more closely match the electricity demand of NV Energy and its
customers.
“Enel Green Power North America is dedicated to developing renewable energy sources through technologically
advanced systems that raise the bar in clean energy technology. We believe this combined geo and solar facility
will do just that,” said Francesco Starace CEO of Enel Green Power. “Even more importantly, it brings additional
benefit to the community including tax revenues and jobs for Nevada’s workforce.”
EGPNA employs approx. 50 employees in the state of Nevada.
All electricity generated at the Stillwater Hybrid facility will be sold through a firm delivery power purchase
agreement (PPA) with NV Energy; the Stillwater geothermal plant is interconnected to the Fallon community
transmission grid and assists with voltage stabilization providing Fallon residents a more consistent energy
supply.
Calpine Corp: Heat, Not Pressure to Create Fractures at Geysers EGS Demo Project
In a public update last week, Calpine Corp. presented details on work at the “Enhanced Geothermal System
Demonstration Project” at The Geysers geothermal field in California. The project represents a collaboration
between Calpine, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and the DOE, which is co-funding it. The goal is to
prove the ability to stimulate hot rocks by injecting cold, treated wastewater and could increase energy production
and provide a model for other areas.
The first water injection step tests will begin next month. The scientists will use heat rather than pressure to
create tiny fractures. “We want a cloud of fractures,” rather than a single fracture, principal investigator Mark
Walters explained to press. “High pressure would not create a cloud of fractures.”

Reno, NV (August 16, 2011) – The Geothermal Energy
Association has announced the winners for the inaugural GEA
Honors, designed to recognize the individuals and companies
that have made significant contributions to the development of
the geothermal industry. The winners and nominees were
honored at an exclusive awards dinner at the Grand Sierra
Resort and Casino, held in conjunction with the organization’s
first-ever GEA National Geothermal Summit.
GEA Honors are awarded to GEA member companies in three distinct
areas: Technological Advancement, Economic Development and

TAS Energy Inc. has been awarded the GEA Honors Technological Advancement award for its development of
new high-efficiency binary expanders, which have substantiated the commercial viability and utility use of low-
temperature resources. The new design features off-the-shelf components and ease of field maintenance in
addition to utilizing a non-flammable, environmentally friendly working fluid which is both safe and efficient. Lower
temperatures than traditionally thought of as ‘commercially viable resource temperatures’ can now be utilized for
geothermal and waste heat applications, demonstrating how this innovative application can potentially add 15%
additional power to a geothermal flash plant, delivering improved economics even in high price regions, and
decreasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

EnergySource LLC received the GEA Honors award, presented along with the EESI, for environmental
stewardship of its Hudson Ranch 1 Project in Imperial Valley, CA. The Hudson Ranch 1 plant is designed to
dramatically reduce CO2 emissions (projected to be less than 70 percent of the average geothermal plant) and to
set a new standard in minimized water use. EnergySource has also been actively engaged in the protection of
biological resources. Where Burrowing Owls have been impacted by the construction of Hudson Ranch 1,
EnergySource has used proven passive relocation techniques and is monitoring the owls until nearby construction
ends.

Gradient Resources: Ground Broken on Patua Plant
On August 16, Reno-based Gradient Resources broke ground on the $300 million Patua geothermal plant. The
plant is expected to generate 60 MW, enough power to supply about 36,000 homes. Energy from the plant will be
sold to Sacramento Municipal Utility District when the plant comes on line, estimated in late 2012. The project will
employ about 170 at the peak of construction. When construction is complete, 32 people will work in operation
and maintenance.

RE&EE Advisory Committee Adopts Recommendations to Support U.S. Market
On Friday, August 19, the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Advisory Committee (RE&EEAC) approved a
list of recommendations that the group will present to the Acting Secretary of Commerce next month. The U.S.
Department of Commerce established the RE&EEAC to provide input on trade issues that will support the
international competitiveness of U.S. companies involved in the expanding sector of renewable energy and
energy efficiency manufacturers and services providers. The Geothermal Energy Association actively participates
in the RE&EEAC.
The recommendations approved by the committee are as follows:
Recommendation 1: The United States should
establish a national level policy with binding clean
energy targets to ensure a viable, stable, and long-
term domestic market for RE&EE goods and
services.
Recommendation 2: The Department of Energy
should modify its mission to include the promotion of
U.S. economic competitiveness.
Recommendation 3: The effect on U.S. economic
competitiveness should be taken into account before
entering into bilateral research and development
partnerships and in the evaluation of the
effectiveness of such partnerships.
Recommendation 4: The Department of Energy
should add an evaluation of the potential export
market into its grant and loan application and
selection process to assure the U.S. is developing
and commercializing RE&EE technologies that can
be exported competitively.
Recommendation 5: NIST/MEP and DOE/ITP
should identify and adopt consistent international
voluntary technical standards for RE&EE services
and corresponding qualifications for E3 service
providers.
Recommendation 6: Through workforce training and
professional qualification programs, EPA, DOE and
DOL ETA should work with MEP centers and local
businesses and a growing number of E3 partner
organizations to expand client access to RE&EE
expertise.
Recommendation 7: Each E3 program client’s work
plan should include local Export Assistance Center
services for pre-export and export strategy
counseling and USPTO consultations on how to
protect IPR and new technologies in foreign
markets.
Recommendation 8: Offer U.S. exporters a pre-
export working capital loan guarantee to include

expansion of U.S. manufacturing and services
operations as a precursor to U.S. exports.
Recommendation 9: USTR should instruct the ITC to
conduct a Section 332 Report that examines the
global import market for renewable energy products
and services and demand projections in leading
markets. This report should also identify trends of
U.S. market share in key import markets.
Recommendation 10: DOE/EERE in cooperation
with the national labs should study:
Structures of the global renewable
energy industries, including supply
chain relationships and foreign
direct investment;
Global production, consumption,
sales, financing mechanisms,
research and development, and
business innovation in the
renewable energy sector;
Benchmark U.S. government
policies and programs affecting
RE&EE financing, R&D, and local
production against key foreign
competitors; and
Factors that may affect the future
competitiveness of the U.S.
renewable energy industries through
2020.
Recommendation 11: Create a template MOU to be
signed by select U.S. and individual foreign
investment entities to facilitate the connection of
U.S. RE&EE companies and foreign sources of
capital.
These resolutions will be presented to the Acting Secretary of Commerce and other government officials at the
next RE&EEAC meeting, which is scheduled for September 15 in Washington, DC. The action of the committee

California: Utilities to Buy Small Renewable Energy Contracts in Biannual Auctions
The California Public Utilities Commission last week approved the "renewable auction mechanism," or RAM, a
program for biannual auctions (called "reverse auctions” because the lowest bid is accepted) on small-scale
renewable energy contracts. Projects must be at least 500 kilowatts in size and must be up and running within 18
months of winning their bids. Utilities will decide before each auction how many megawatts they want of certain
types of power, and a total of 1 gigawatt (1,000 MW) will be sold per auction.

Geothermal Summit
The Geothermal Energy Association kicked off its first-ever National Geothermal Summit with a VIP tour of Ormat
Technologies, Inc.'s Steamboat Geothermal Power Plant Complex. The Steamboat Geothermal Power Plant
Complex, located in Washoe County, generates 89 MW of clean, base-load energy and provides enough
electricity to support the residential load of Reno. Comprised of seven power plants, constructed between 1988
and 2008, the Steamboat power complex is the company's flagship facility and was the first to employ Ormat's air-
cooling technology.

Nicaragua: Ram Power Closes $160m for Phase II of San Jacinto-Tizate Project
Ram Power has closed a $160m credit facility for the Phase II expansion of its geothermal power project in
northwest Nicaragua. The 36-MW San Jacinto-Tizate project is now 85% complete on Phase I, and Ram Power
has now met the required injection capacity for both Phase I and Phase II. The company submitted an initial draw
request for $104m. About $35m of that was distributed to it as a reimbursement of a portion of its equity
investment; the rest will be used for future project costs.

Australia: Havilah Resources, Geothermal Resources in Merger Talks
Havilah Resources (ASX: HAV), a company aiming to become a significant producer of copper, gold, cobalt and
molybdenum, is in merger discussions with Geothermal Resources (ASX: GHT). The company has been granted
a trading halt by the ASX and is expected to make an announcement on or before the commencement of trading
on August 24. Havilah has a 58% strategic interest in Geothermal Resources.
Indonesia: Supreme Energy Requests Government Contract Assurance
Supreme Energy has not yet signed power purchase agreements for two geothermal fields with state electricity
utility PT PLN. Supreme Energy declined to sign the PPAs in July because it was waiting for assurance from the
government of PLN’s ability to pay for the power and fund the projects in the future. Supreme Energy requested a
guarantee that PLN would not fall into bankruptcy and that the government compensate its financial obligations if
the projects were stopped due to future political or legal changes.
The 2011 ministerial decree on the guarantee of PLN’s businesses stipulated that the government would ensure
that PLN was financially able to fulfill all the obligations of all the power purchase agreements and ordered PLN to
purchase electricity from geothermal producers at a ceiling price of 9.7 cents per kilowatt-hour.
The two geothermal fields affected are Gunung Rajabasa and Muara Laboh, which Supreme Energy operates in
Lampung and West Sumatra. They are expected to have a total capacity of 220 MW each.

Northern Marianas Islands: CUC Seeks Geothermal Exploration on Saipan
The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. has issued a request for proposals for the exploration of viable geothermal
energy resources on Saipan. The Department of the Interior's Office of Insular Affairs is paying up to $1.2 million
of the cost of the feasibility studies. If geothermal energy is proven feasible, the CUC will then invite bids on the
development and commissioning of a geothermal power plant.
“We in the CNMI are at a critical point in time for power system planning because the base load diesel plant at
Lower Base has about seven years of life remaining. That means we have to start planning very soon to replace
that plant. The parallel path of development with diesel is geothermal,” CUC executive director Abe Utu Malae
told press.
Philippines: Green Core Geothermal to Provide Backup Power
As approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission, Green Core Geothermal will provide backup power to the
National Grid Corporation of the Philippines at a cost of P4.7 per kilowatt-hour. “The increasing demand for
power in Visayas translates to a parallel increase in demand for ancillary services to guarantee continued stability
and reliability of power,” the ERC decision stated.
The power will come from Green Core’s 305-megawatt (MW) Palinpinon geothermal power plant and the 192-MW
Tongonan geothermal power plant in Leyte province.

Maritime Geothermal, based in New Brunswick, Canada, was founded by Glenn Kaye and Edna Kaye in 1983
and now provides ground source heat pumps throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe. The company
employs local labor and in-house manufacturing, ensuring high-quality units.
Maritime Geothermal was recognized as one of New Brunswick’s most innovative companies in 2010 along with
14 other companies. Economic Development Minister Paul Robichaud presided at the Award Ceremony.

The Energy and Minerals Division of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists will hold a Geothermal
Session at the 2012 annual meeting to be held in Long Beach, California on April 22-25. The Geothermal
Session will be hosted under Theme 7: Alternative Energy and will be chaired by W.C. “Rusty” Riese of Rice
University and Stephen Testa of the California State Mining & Geology Board. The Geothermal Session Chair will

Abstracts are requested related to the exploration, development and production, and economics of geothermal
energy especially as associated to production from SEDIMENTARY ROCK. These abstracts could discuss

environmental impact statement (EIS) addressing solar and wind energy ROWs and geothermal leasing in the
West Chocolate Mountains Renewable Energy Project Area in Imperial County. The BLM must receive written
comments on the Draft CDCA Plan Amendment and Draft EIS within 90 days following the date the
Environmental Protection Agency publishes its Notice of Availability for the Draft EIS in the Federal Register.

Currently, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has an open call for Research Experiences for Undergraduates
(REU) Site proposals. The Geothermal Technologies Program (GTP) and NSF REU program are collaborating
on this program as a means to expand undergraduate research opportunities in the area of geothermal energy.
The goal is to introduce more undergraduate students to renewable energy research and the many opportunities
in science and engineering related to geothermal energy.
About REU: The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research
participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science
Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research
projects specifically designed for the REU program.
This solicitation supports of student research through REU Sites. These sites are based on independent

Public Scoping Meetings, Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan (August 24)
The Federal and State Renewable Energy Action Team (REAT – California Energy Commission, California
Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Bureau of Land Management, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) has
launched the joint environmental review for the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan (DRECP), aimed at
streamlining permitting of renewable energy facilities in the California desert. The REAT is preparing a joint
Environmental Impact Report and Environmental Impact Statement (EIR/EIS) for the DRECP, and the Bureau of
Land Management’s proposed amendment to the California Desert Conservation Area (CDCA) Plan.
