KINGSLEY-PIERSON HIGH SCHOOL November 15 & 16 at 7:00 PM in the E.V. Heacock Auditorium

Admission: $5 Adults $3 Students

Congratulations to the new members of the National Honor Society. As I was sitting in the audience listening to the student speeches, I was reminded, again, of the great students we have here at Kingsley-Pierson.

Brandon Sitzmann, a member elected last year, organized the high school tornado cleanup day we had earlier this year. It was a great community service project for our students. The middle school students went out the day before and helped cleanup areas, as well.

The National Honor Society has organized community food drives, led an effort to adopt a family during the holiday season and helped with the blood drives for the Red Cross. Thank you for all you do.

Elementary Comments- Mr. Wiese

Our Parent-Teacher-Conference attendance was once again awesome! This is a tradition that we all want to continue. Another event that is quickly approaching includes our standardized testing. Throughout the week of November 4-8 (and possibly into the following week) Grades 1, 2, 3, & 4 will be taking the Iowa Assessment Tests (formerly ITBS) mainly in the mornings. Adequate sleep and a healthy breakfast are always encouraged before beginning each day, but please make an extra effort in your home this week! Remember Daylight Savings ends on November 2 (set your clocks back one hour).

Your child recently completed our annual “Red Ribbon Week.” We always promote healthy living and want to keep all of our students on the right track. It was great to see the participation for dress-up days. A special “thanks” goes out to the Kingsley-Pierson Booster Club for their continued support. The meal provided for the Kingsley-Pierson Faculty & Staff were much appreciated on Thursday, 10/24/13 (from the KP Booster Club) during Parent-Teacher-Conferences!

Many of you have sent “Box Tops” with your child to school. Thank you and please continue to do this the entire year. The Land-O-Lakes milk caps promotion has officially ended. We are continuing one more year of the “SchoolStore.com” online shopping opportunity.

A reminder about the change in weather, please make sure your child is prepared for the extreme temperatures. If the temperature, precipitation, and wind chill are all at a reasonable level, the kids are outside.

Many families have experienced the flu recently in our district. Please remember the “24 hour” recommendation (fever and/or flu free for 24 hours). The other tip is to wash your hands more than usual to help combat the flu.

I hope all of you have a “Happy Thanksgiving”! There is an early dismissal on Wednesday, November 27 (one hour early).

School Health Information

Backpack food distributions started the beginning of October. Thanks to those in the community that financially support this program. The students really appreciate and are excited to receive their food packs each Friday.

Scrubby Bear from the American Red Cross visited the kindergarten and first grade classrooms. Jenny Hamman from the Red Cross also did a first aid presentation with the 4th grade classes. I will be in the elementary classrooms in November. I will be talking with the kindergartners, 2nd and 4th graders about poison prevention. Poison Center phone stickers and parental informational booklets will be sent home with these students. I will also be talking with the 1st and 3rd graders about fire prevention. We will practice “stop, dropping and rolling” if they catch on fire.

The 6th graders were presented a program sponsored by the Council on Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence, called “Flirt vs. Hurt”. The main focus of the program is to prevent student to student sexual harassment. The 7th and 8th graders also attended an assembly with Jane Griesel from CSADV talking about bullying. The senior health students had a guest speaker come in from Plains Area Mental Health Center. She discussed on her first visit substance abuse. She returned later in the month to talk with the same students about eating disorders. A guest speaker from the CSADV also talked with the senior health students about dating violence.

In late November, I will be recertifying/retraining all the senior health students in CPR/AED. This class will make them in compliance with the new state regulations that started with the 2012 graduating class, that all graduating students be trained in CPR. In late October, I sent a letter in the mail to each senior’s parents, explaining the cost involved to recertify their child, if desired. There is no cost involved in retraining each senior, but if the student would like to maintain their certification, a $25 fee, payable before I start the course November 19th, is required.

If you have any health questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to call me at the school!

-Barb Sitzmann, School Nurse

Proud of ALL our Fall Sports Athletes. Good Luck to Volleyball—playing regionals semi-final on Nov. 1st @ 7pm vs. Gehlen @ LeMars Gehlen. Keep up the good work and please continue to show your Panther Pride! Please utilize our Kingsley-Pierson website for updated schedules and gym times. Mrs. Page and her classes will be keeping these up to date. You can locate gym times under the “community” link. This worked well last year and I have heard great comments again this year. We also have a gym divider/curtain in the Kingsley gym so we will be able to schedule more youth teams for practices. Please remember to supervise your kids at all times.

Exciting news!! There is a new link that you will be able to access on our KP website called, High School Cube. We will be able to upload our athletic events and other activities at Kingsley-Pierson so you can watch them. A few volleyball matches were live streamed. We will plan to upload winter sports, but cannot live stream or upload any post-season events or musicals/plays that would have a copyright.

IMPORTANT DATES:Fall Athletic Banquet—Nov. 5th @ 6:30 with the meal followed by awards. KP Booster Club will provide the main course and parents are to provide the salads and desserts. Emails were sent out regarding this. We would love to see all the athletes and their parents present.

GBB and BBB preseason meetings on Monday, Nov. 4th @ 3:35 in library & ICN.

Girls Basketball Starts: November 11, 2013(IGCA scrimmage on Nov. 16th, Nov. 23rd scrimmage @ KP, Nov. 30th @ HMS)

Boys Basketball & Wrestling starts: November 18, 2013

Winter Meet the Team Night will be Nov. 22nd. Parents are invited to come and watch practice. There will be a Mandatory Parent Meeting in the auditorium at 6pm followed by individual sports meetings and player introductions. PE NEWS: Elementary and JH PE had a great Fall. Students have been getting a lot of exercise!! I talked to the kids on the first day of PE about the importance of locking their belongings up. ALWAYS lock your things up!

JH PE students need to change into PE clothes (i.e. t-shirt AND shorts) as well as indoor. Clean PE shoes. These are easy points to earn for your PE grade. Also, remember if you child has seen a doctor and they are excused from PE for any medical reason, they will need a note from their doctor or from you, the parent/guardian, saying that they are OK to participate. Thank you for your cooperation!

$4 off

2014 yearbook sales begin

It seems like the 2013 yearbooks just arrived and now we are already selling the 2014 books.

The price of the books remains at $40 if they are purchased before Christmas break. After Christmas, the price goes to $45. This year, to increase early-bird sales, there is a coupon for $4 off the cost. This coupon was given to all K-12 students on October 30th. Hurry, the coupon expires on December 6th! The order form is included toward the end of this newsletter. Please attach the coupon to the order.

FACT: The average cost of a yearbook in the Midwest is $50 - $55. So, the K-P yearbook is a bargain when compared to the Midwest average!

Considering that books can last over 100 years (if properly taken care of), a $40 book amounts to a mere 40-cents per year!

Teen Read Week was celebrated during the week of October 14th- 17th in the High School. Each day the students were able to read during advisory period. To go along with reading they were also treated to cookie bars.

On Thursday October 17th all the students names 9th-12th grade were put into a drawing for a “Big Cookie” made by Joyce Pfaffle. This year’s lucky winner was Freshmen Logan Wenzel.

In the elementary AR first session ended with great success. Most of the students made their goal and were able to earn extra prizes. We had a surprise extra recess and a snack on Monday Oct. 28th. The second session is underway and the kids are working hard. To help your student keep track of what they have read and their progress log on to :

Teen Read Week

Middle School Comments- Mr. Wiese

On Monday, November 11, @11:00 AM, in the Kingsley-Pierson Middle School Gym, the annual Veteran’s Day Program will be held. You are all invited for the festivities in Pierson along with the public. There will be multiple phases to the program including honoring our Veteran’s, musical performances, and a message about this special day in our country.

Thank you for attending your child’s conference this past month. Many of you monitor your child’s grades, lunch balance, attendance, and lesson plans on-line (remember this procedure carries over year to year) via JMC. If this interests you, please call the middle school (712-375-5939) or email me at [email protected] for more details.

Your child just completed the annual “Red Ribbon Week.” We always promote healthy living and want to keep all of our students on the right track. It was great to see the participation for dress-up days. A special “thanks” goes out to the Kingsley-Pierson Booster Club for their donations. The meals provided for the Kingsley-Pierson Faculty & Staff were much appreciated on Thursday, 10/24/13 (from the KP Booster Club) during Parent-Teacher-Conferences!

Throughout the days of November 5-7: all middle school students will be taking the Iowa Assessment Tests (formerly ITBS.) Adequate sleep and a healthy breakfast are always encouraged before beginning each day, but please make an extra effort in your home for this particular week!

Our volleyball and football seasons are complete. Congratulations to all of those involved with the programs! The basketball season is now in full swing. Opening games (AOMV) begin on November 19, and I hope to see you there. The girls play in Anthon @4:00 PM and the boys play in Pierson @4:00 PM. Please remember to promote “Sportsmanship” at every event! The on-line calendar via the KP web site displays all the games and late practices.

Many families have experienced the flu recently in our district. Please remember the “24 hour” recommendation (fever and/or flu free for 24 hours). The other tip is to wash your hands more than usual to help combat the flu.

Please do not forget to set your clocks back one hour on 11/2/13 as Daylight Saving Time Ends. I hope all of you have a “Happy Thanksgiving”! There is an early dismissal on Wednesday, November 27 (one hour early). I am thankful for each of your kids! Thank you for allowing your kids to help with the “clean-up” day way back on October 9 for grades 6-8. Each kid was spectacular volunteering their time at both sites helping others that day (also thank you to those who donated snacks and drinks that afternoon) from the devastating tornado on October 4.

On Wednesday, October 23 the 6th grade held the annual Egyptian Fair. They dressed as ancient Egyptians and presented on topics such as mummies, pyramids, maps and hieroglyphics, and famous men and women of ancient Egypt. Groups also presented on ancient gods and goddesses and everyday life of ancient Egyptians. The kids did a great job and shared some great information as “experts” of ancient Egypt! Thank you to all who attended! - Mrs. Spooner

THE GUIDANCE OFFICE Seniors have been visiting with college representatives in the guidance office this past month and these visits by college representatives will continue until the end of March. November is the month for financial aid training. The ICAN Center from Des Moines will be in the Kingsley-Pierson High School Library on November 19 at 6:30 P.M. The presenter will talk about the types of financial aid available and how to complete the FAFSA application for financial aid. All seniors and their parents are encouraged to attend this presentation.

GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION: Most scholarships for colleges and universities have the forms online and the students need to complete the forms online. Students need to visit the college website often and view the available scholarships. Sometimes the scholarships are listed on their own tab and sometimes they are listed in the financial aid tab. Colleges assume seniors are checking their websites for both scholarships and catalog information. I very seldom receive college based scholarships here in the guidance office. The scholarships I receive are the general scholarships. The local scholarships are mailed to each senior in March.

SCHOLARSHIP SEARCH SERVICES: Scholarships search services are also available for free. Some of the most common are: Fastweb.comI Have a Plan Iowa—all seniors started this last year. They need to return to this website and see what is available.CollegeNet.comScholarships.comScholarshipMonkey.com

IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY CHRISTINA HIXSON OPPORTUNITY AWARDS: The Hixson Opportunity Award is a four year grant of one-half tuition and fees to be used at Iowa State University. One hundred high school seniors from across Iowa will receive the award each year, representing each county in the state. High school seniors who demonstrate potential in ways that go beyond class rankings and test scores should apply for this award. This scholarship is for those students with the ability and determination but more modest circumstances and means to afford college. The online Hixson application is available at www.dso.iastate.edu/hixson/application. The deadline for this scholarship is February 1, 2014.

WAYNE STATE COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINES: Students planning to attend Wayne State College need to have their scholarship applications at the Wayne State Admissions Office by December 1, 2013. Also, before a college will award or look at a scholarship application, the student needs to have completed a college application.

HERBERT HOOVER UNCOMMON STUDENT AWARD FOR JUNIORS: This is a project driven program not based on grades, test scores, essays or financial aid. Visit www.hooverassociation.org for details. This program identifies and honors approximately 15 Iowa high school juniors who propose and then accomplish projects of their own design. The award also honors Herbert Hoover, an Iowa native and the 31st President of the United States.
