Jim Plunkett Football Honors

In 1970 Jim Plunkett became Stanford’s first and onlyplayer to win the Heisman Trophy Award as the

best player in college football. Plunkett led theIndians to the Pacific-8 Conference Championshipwith a 9-3 record, including a thrilling 27-17 upsetvictory over previously undefeated Ohio State in theRose Bowl. He was the runaway winner for the tro-phy, garnering 510 of 1,059 first-place ballots cast. Hecompiled 2,299 points to 1,401 for runner-up JoeTheismann of Notre Dame. In addition to the Heisman,Plunkett won the Maxwell Award, was a consensusFirst-Team All-America, and was named Player of theYear by United Press International, Sporting News,Sport Magazine, the Walter Camp Association, andthe American College Football Coaches Association. He completed 191 of 358 passes for 2,715 yards, andhe ran for another 183 yards, giving him 2,898 yards oftotal offense that season (aschool and Pac-8record). Highlights of theseason included his 275passing yards in a 24-14drubbing of USC, 22-of-36passing for 268 yards and fourtouchdowns in a 29-22 winagainst Washington, and a phenom-enal 20-of-30 for 265 yards in the1971 Rose Bowl, Plunkett’s finalgame at Stanford.

After finishing eighth in the Heismanballoting as a junior in 1969, Plunkett turned downan opportunity to turn pro and returned to Stanford for his

senior season. “Coach (John)Ralston, all of our coaches, and my teammates have beenbuilding something atStanford for the past coupleof years,” Plunkett explained.“If I were to leave now, Iwould always have the feelingthat I let them down beforeour goals were reached.Besides, we are always tellingkids today not to drop out,to finish school, to set tar-gets and to work towardsthem. What would they

think if I were to drop out now for professional football?”Plunkett returned to Stanford for the 1970 season and

wound up having a storybook year he would never forget. Heled the Indians to their first Rose Bowl appearance in 19 yearsand their first Rose Bowl victory in 30 seasons. His perfor-mance in the Rose Bowl earned him Most Valuable Player hon-ors. He finished his career with 7,887 yards in total offense, which not only set a Stanford record but also established a newNCAA record.

He went on to become the number-one draft pick in theNFL by the New England Patriots. He played 16 seasons in theNFL with the Patriots, San Francisco 49ers and Oakland/LosAngeles Raiders. He was named NFL Rookie of the Year in 1971and won two Super Bowl championships with the Raiders. Hewas the MVP of Super Bowl XV following the 1981 seasonwhen he led the Oakland Raiders over the Philadelphia Eagles.Three years later, Plunkett led the Los Angeles Raiders to a vic-tory in Super Bowl XVIII over the Washington Redskins.
