NATIONAL CHERRY CONFERENCENATIONAL APPLE & PEAR CONFERENCE

Page 2: National Conference Program (Cherry _Apple & Pear)

The 2011National Cherry Conference and the National Apple & Pear Conference have been specifi cally tailored to meet the demands of Australian pome fruit and cherry growers. The program is purposely focussed on production issues which have strong ‘take home’ messages for growers. Our aim is to inspire growers with new concepts and methodologies which they can implement on their own properties. With increasing pressures to reduce costs and become globally competitive our aim is to give you the latest information on new and future production techniques. The HortExpo will occur again following on from the successful inaugural HortEXpo in 2009. The event will be a combined fi eld day, workshop, seminar, and trade show that will appeal to all growers and industry stakeholders alike.

Growing Smarter, Growing StrongerThe theme of the this years event is ‘Growing Smarter, Growing Stronger’ and refl ects the necessity for the modern orchardist to be abreast of modern production trends to ensure that their business if economically viable and sustainable.

And Going Greener....In 2011 we bring you a greener conference with some ‘green’ initiatives including a paperless program and a reusable USB card. You will see other initiatives leading up to and during the conference.

Adelaide Convention CentreLocated on the picturesque North Terrace overlooking the Torrens River, the Adelaide Convention Centre provides you with a modern conference facility in a relaxing atmosphere. Page 6: National Conference Program (Cherry _Apple & Pear)

Dr. Larry Schrader (USA)Dr. Larry Schrader recently retired from Washington State University. He has been involved in agricultural research for 44 years since completing his Ph.D. at The University of Illinois in 1967. During the last 16 years, Schrader and his research group became internationally known for research on several apple fruit skin disorders, including sunburn. To help apple growers reduce losses due to sunburn damage, Schrader invented the fi rst sunscreen for apples to help growers protect their fruit. Schrader and his research group also became widely known for research on sweet cherry cracking induced by rain. Two causes of cracking were identifi ed, and environmental factors that increase cracking were identifi ed.

Dr Pierre-Eric Lauri (France)Pierre-Eric Lauri is currently a Senior Researcher at INRA (National Institute for Agronomic Research) in France. After a Bachelor Science in 1982 in Tropical biology at Montpellier, France he spent 1 ½ years for national civil service as junior scientist at ORSTOM (now IRD) in Nouméa, New Caledonia. He then spent 3years as a teacher in Junior high School in New Caledonia. Pierre- Eric completed a PhD thesis on tree architecture in relation to fl owering with fi eld works in New Caledonia and French Guyana in 1988. He was recruited at INRA in 1989, as researcher on a program on fruit tree architecture and genetic variability, and improvement of tree training. Research implemented on temperate and tropical species: Cherry, Peach, Fig, Pear, Olive, with a main focus on Apple and Mango.

Dr. Amos Naor (Israel)Amos Naor received his three degrees in Soil Science at the Faculty of Agriculture, Rehovot in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. He

works for the Golan Research Institute of the University of Haifa, Israel since 1985. Amos Naor works also for the Northern R&D in Israel since 1995 and serves as the scientifi c director of the deciduous orchards and wine grapes division. The general fi elds of interest are irrigation scheduling of fruit trees and applied environmental physiology. In the past two decades Amos Naor works on two major topics: water stress indicators for irrigation scheduling, mainly focusing on midday stem water potential and optimising irrigation of fruit trees at different phenological stages.

Peter Triloff (Germany)Peter Triloff has a long history within horticulture starting back in 1979. He has completed studies in horticulture and is due to complete his PhD in 2011. Much of his work has focused on areas of crop protection including work on diseases such as apple scab and in recent years on chemical application techniques. The focus of his PhD was “Small Droplet Spray Application of Pesticides in Top-Fruit 0 Minimization of Spray Drift by Optimized Air Flow and Canopy Related Dosage. Peter Triloff is employed by Marktgemeinschaft Bodenseeobst as a consultant in Germany.
