Three of the original series resulted in splits, while the one that didn’t, between Colorado College and Denver, ended in a pair of ties. CC and DU will battle for the Gold Pan this weekend with Denver needing one win or two ties to retain the trophy for a fourth straight year, while the Tigers need a win and a tie or two wins to reclaim the Gold Pan for the first time since 2013-14. Six NCHC teams are ranked in both the USCHO.com Poll and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll for the second straight week, with all six teams in the top 15 of both polls. The NCHC’s six ranked teams in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll are double the number of any other conference. This is only the eighth week since the start of the 2016-17 season that an NCHC team has not been No. 1 in the USCHO Poll. Half of the NCHC teams have held the No. 1 spot during that span (SCSU, DU, UND and UMD), while only four other NCAA teams have total (Boston University, Penn State, Notre Dame and Cornell). (page 9) Three NCHC skaters are in South Korea playing in the 2018 Winter Olympics. SCSU junior defenseman Will Borgen and Denver junior forward Troy Terry are suiting up for Team USA, while North Dakota sophomore forward Ludvig Hoff is playing for his native Norway. Terry registered the primary assist on Team USA’s first goal in Thursday’s 2-1 win over Slovakia and tied for second among forwards with 17:15 time on ice. Four of the top six scoring offenses in the country hail from the NCHC, led by SCSU’s 3.86 goals per game average, which is second in the NCAA. Omaha, Western Michigan and Denver rank fourth through sixth, respectively. Two of the top five offenses meet this weekend with SCSU visiting WMU, which is averaging 3.50 goals per game (page 28) Denver senior goaltender Tanner Jaillet is tied for the NCHC single- season shutouts record with five this season. He leads the NCHC and is tied for third nationally with his five whitewashes this year. Jaillet joins six previous NCHC netminders in logging five shutouts in a season: Denver’s Sam Brittain (2013-14), Miami’s Jay Williams (2014-15), UND’s Cam Johnson, UMD’s Kasimir Kaskisuo and SCSU’s Charlie Lindgren (2015-16), and UMD’s Hunter Miska (2016-17). Omaha senior forward David Pope leads the NCAA with 12 power play goals this season, two more than any other player. The 12 power play markers set a new NCHC single-season record, breaking the old mark by St. Cloud State’s Jonny Brodzinski in 2014-15 when he tallied 11. (page 23) The NCHC is home to six of the top 14 scoring defensemen in the country in terms of points per game, all from different teams. SCSU junior Jimmy Schuldt is tied for first nationally averaging 1.00 points per game, while Miami senior Louie Belpedio is tied for fifth at 0.93 ppg. Schuldt faces WMU and junior Corey Schueneman, who is ninth nationally (0.88 ppg), this weekend, while Belpedio and Miami tangle with Minnesota Duluth freshman Scott Perunovich, who is eighth and tops among rookies (0.89 ppg). RedHawks junior Grant Hutton leads all NCAA blue liners with both 10 goals and eight power play goals this year, while Belpedio is tied with UND junior Christian Wolanin for second with nine total tallies. • Freshman forward Troy Conzo recorded his first career multi-goal game in Friday’s win at UND. He had three goals all season entering the game, while four of his five goals have now come in his last six games. His second goal was scored short-handed, which was the Tigers’ first short-handed goal of the season and his first career short-handed tally.

• Denver was idle last weekend but swept Minnesota Duluth in its last action Feb. 2-3 with 1-0 and 4-3 wins to extend its unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2). With the two wins, the Pioneers improved to 11-1-3 against ranked opponents this season.

• Senior goaltender Tanner Jaillet pitched his fifth shutout of the season and ninth of his career Feb. 2 with a 24-save effort. The five white-washes lead the NCHC and tie for third nationally. The five shutouts also tie the NCHC single-season record, set by six other goalies previously, including former DU netminder Sam Brittain in 2013-14 and current North Dakota goaltender Cam Johnson in 2015-16. Jaillet’s nine career shutouts trail only Johnson’s 10 in NCHC history.

• Defenseman Ian Mitchell leads Denver freshmen with 22 points (2g, 20a) through 28 games. He is second in scoring among NCAA freshman defensemen and leads all NCAA rookies with 16 power play points.

Awarded to the NCHC regular season champion, the Julie

and Spencer Penrose Memorial Cup (right) serves as the league’s crowning achievement. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC’s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. Denver won its first Penrose Cup last season, while North Dakota won back-to-back Penrose Cups in 2015 and 2016 after St. Cloud State won the inaugural season.

preVIoUS Week roUND-Up

FRIDAY, FEB. 9

Breaking the recent trend, road teams won both National Col-legiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) games Friday night, while

the standings saw some movement despite only half the confer-ence being in action. No. 4/3 St. Cloud State made the biggest move, jumping into a tie for first place with Denver, which is idle this weekend, after a big first period led to a 5-2 win at Miami. In Grand Forks, Colorado College earned its first win at Ralph Engelstad Arena since March of 2014 with a 4-2 victory over No. 8/8 North Dakota behind two goals from freshman forward Troy Conzo.

Behind a big first period, No. 4/3 St. Cloud State downed Miami, 5-2, Friday night at Steve Cady Arena to move into a tie for first place in the NCHC, along with Denver, which is idle. The Huskies (18-6-3, 12-4-1-0 NCHC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first frame with the first two goals coming in the first 3:18 of the game as junior forward Robby Jackson knocked in the first of his two goals on the night, while a minute later freshman forward Blake Lizotte doubled SCSU’s lead. Junior forward Mikey Eyssimont tallied the eventual game-winner midway through the opening period with some nifty moves to cap the three-goal outburst. Miami (10-14-3, 5-10-2-0 NCHC) rallied in the second stanza with two goals in a two-minute span, potting a pair of re-bounds to make it a one-goal game heading into the final frame. Freshman forward Kevin Fitzgerald, who had a two-point night, restored a two-goal cushion for the Huskies seven minutes into the third period, however, to thwart any comeback, and Jackson sealed the victory with an empty-netter for his team-leading 14th goal of the year. SCSU finished with a slight, 30-28 edge in shots on goal, while junior Jeff Smith made 26 saves to earn the win in net. The teams were a combined 0-for-7 on the power play.

In a back-and-forth affair, Colorado College held off No. 8/8 North Dakota for a 4-2 win Friday at Ralph Engelstad Arena, picking up its first win in Grand Forks in its last 10 tries, while also pulling within a point of fourth place. Freshman forward Troy Conzo, who notched his first career multi-goal game in the win, put the Tigers (12-11-4, 6-8-3-2/0 NCHC) in front in the first frame, burying the puck after a turnover behind UND’s net. The Fighting Hawks (12-9-8, 6-7-4-0/2 NCHC) pulled even when junior defenseman Christian Wolanin converted a pen-alty shot midway through the second stanza, but CC answered 29 ticks later when Conzo wristed a shot top corner while short-handed for his second goal. UND tied the game again five minutes after on a diving goal from sophomore defensem-an Colton Poolman, only to see the Tigers retake the lead 43 seconds later on sophomore defenseman Alex Pernitsky’s first career goal, which was the game-winner. North Dakota outshot CC, 14-10, over the final 20 minutes, but couldn’t find an equal-izer as an empty-netter sealed the Tigers win. The teams were a combined 0-for-10 on the power play in the contest. UND fin-ished with a 36-29 advantage in shots on goal, but sophomore goalie Alex Leclerc stopped 34 shots for CC in the win.

SATURDAY, FEB. 10

With three weeks remaining in the regular season, there’s a new team atop the NCHC standings as No. 4/3 St. Cloud

State swept Miami to take control of first place by themselves, three points ahead of No. 2/2 Denver, which was idle this weekend. No. 8/8 North Dakota also took a big step towards securing home ice for the postseason Saturday with a 5-1 win over Colorado College, which moved them into a tie for third place with Western Michigan. The Huskies received a shutout from freshman goalie David Hrenak, his third of the season, to hold off the RedHawks, before adding two empty-net goals to secure Saturday’s series finale, 4-0, on the road. In Grand Forks, UND struck twice in the second stanza and three more times in the third to down the Tigers and salvage a series split, with two goals coming from junior forward Joel Janatuinen.

Behind a shutout from freshman David Hrenak, No. 4/3 St. Cloud State finished off a sweep of Miami Saturday with a 4-0 win at Steve Cady Arena. With the victory, the Huskies (19-6-3, 13-4-1-0 NCHC) moved into sole possession of first place in the NCHC, three points clear of Denver. After a scoreless first frame, sophomore forward Nick Poehling scored the game-winner and only goal the Huskies would need with a wrister 3:48 into the second stanza. The game remained a tight, one-goal contest until junior forward Patrick Newell, who had a three-point night, used a top-shelf snipe midway through the third period to dou-ble the lead. He then added his second goal of the night with the first of two SCSU empty-netters to arrive at the final score. Hrenak finished with 30 saves for his third whitewash of the season, including stopping a penalty shot to keep it 1-0 early in the third period. Miami (10-15-3, 5-11-2-0 NCHC) finished with a 30-21 advantage in shots on goal, but was 0-for-4 on the power play. SCSU went 0-for-5 a man up. The Huskies remain on the road next weekend with two games at No. 15/14 Western Michigan, while Miami hits the road for two games at No. 10/12 Minnesota Duluth.

Two goals from junior forward Joel Janatuinen powered No. 8/8 North Dakota to a 5-1 win over Colorado College Saturday at Ralph Engelstad Arena to earn a weekend split, the second time this season the teams split a weekend series. After a score-less first frame, the Fighting Hawks (13-9-8, 7-7-4-0/2 NCHC) jumped in front 2-0 in the second stanza with a pair of power play goals, the first coming from Janatuinen and the latter from classmate Shane Gersich, who set up the first power play marker for a two-point night. Senior forward Austin Poganski, who as-sisted on Gersich’s tally, made it 3-0 less than a minute into the final frame, before the Tigers (12-12-4, 6-9-3-2/0 NCHC) got on the board with a snipe from sophomore forward Nick Halloran, his 17th goal of the year. Janatuinen restored the three-goal lead three minutes later, however, to seal the victory. UND finished 2-for-7 on the power play, while killing all five CC man advan-tages, and outshot the Tigers, 30-21, in the win. Freshman Peter Thome earned the win in net with 20 saves for the Fighting Hawks. Next weekend, North Dakota is on the road at No. 13/13 Omaha, while the Tigers return to Colorado to complete their Gold Pan rivalry with No. 2/2 Denver.
