Shelter Access

About the National Coalition for the Homeless
Since its founding in the early 1980s, the National Coalition for the Homeless has worked to end homelessness, as well as to defend the civil rights and attend to the needs of those experiencing homelessness. The organization consists of activists, faith-based service providers, individuals who have experienced homelessness in the past or who are currently experiencing it, and community organizers.
Conclusion
With extreme and chronic cold weather reaching practically all parts of the nation this winter, the National Coalition for Homeless has noted that many communities do not have plans to provide shelter to those in need. Certain regions with shelter capabilities will only open shelters during certain months or if the temperature drops below a designated temperature. Yet weather conditions have placed a significant burden on their resources, all while many people experiencing homelessness contend with frostbite, hypothermia, and other life-threatening conditions. The National Coalition for the Homeless advises communities to expand their homeless services to meet the increased shelter needs in the cold-weather months.
