Colonel Frederick Lough, MC, USADeputy ChairmanDepartment of SurgeryUniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
Colonel Frederick Lough’s impressive military and civilian career spans 40 years. At Walter Reed Army Medical Center he completed residency training in General Surgery in 1979 and Thoracic Surgery fellowship training in 1982. He has since held numerous military and civilian leadership positions, including Chief of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at Letterman Army Hospital, San Francisco, CA; Chief of Cardiac Surgery, Reading Hospital and Medical Center, Reading, PA; and Director, Cardiac Surgery Program, George Washington University Hospital, Washington, D.C. While in the U. S. Army Reserves from 2010 – 2012, he participated in notable combat operations in Afghanistan as Deputy Commander, NATO Role 2 Hospital Camp Arena, 4th Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, and later as Senior Trauma Surgeon, 628th and 624th Forward Surgical Teams, 173rd Airborne Brigade. In 2013 he returned to active duty and currently serves as Deputy Chairman, Department of Surgery, USUHS. His military awards include the Bronze Star, Combat Action Badge and Meritorious Service Medal. He also received the USUHS Barry Goldwater Service Award and the Michael E. DeBakey International Military Surgeon’s Award for Excellence. COL Lough graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1970 where he lettered in swimming and was on the Dean’s List. He graduated from The George Washington University School of Medicine in 1975 where he served as class president and was awarded the Alec Horowitz Award for Excellence in Surgery and inducted as member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He is board certified in Thoracic Surgery and is a 1970 graduate of the US Army’s Ranger Course. COL Lough was also a US Army Astronaut Selectee for NASA. A native of Providence R.I., COL Lough is husband to a devoted Army wife and father of five.

The award is based on the physician’s demonstrated abilities as a clinician instructor, counselor and mentor.

LTC Michael S. Cahill, MC, USA, Cardiovascular DiseasesThe General Graves B. Erskine award is presented annually to the outstanding resident and fellow as determined by a selection committee. These awards are sponsored by Mrs. Graves B. Erskine in the name of her husband, General Graves Blanchard Erskine, who served in both World War I and World War II. He commanded the 3rd Marine Division in Iwo Jima and the 1st and 3rd Marine Division at Camp Pendleton and later served as Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic.
Major General Lewis A. Mologne AwardLT Miguel M. Alampay, MC, USN, Psychiatry
The Lewis A. Mologne Award is given in memory of Major General Lewis Aspey Mologne, the first West Point graduate to become a General Officer in the Army Medical Department. His 35 year career was marked by an outstanding demonstration of commitment to the care of patients, and a deep sense of loyalty to his country, the US Army and his fellow soldiers. He showed the greatest respect for truth, honesty and dedication in the practice of medicine. The award is given annually to physician in training who exemplifies these characteristics. The award is given by the Lewis A. Mologne trust of the Henry M. Jackson Foundation.

Ashford award is presented annually to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center house staff member judged to have accomplished the most outstanding research during training. The selection committee considers the quality and significance of the work as well as the nominees’ contributions to the research. These include both leadership and active participation in the conduct of the study and its intellectual aspects. The award was initiated in 1975 by Colonel Marcel E. Conrad, MC, USA, the first Chief of Clinical Investigation at WRNMMC, in honor of Colonel Bailey K. Ashford and his work in solving the problem of anemia caused by hookworm in Puerto Rico.

The Robert A. Phillips award recognizes the outstanding individual research projects in both staff/fellow and resident categories presented during the annual National Capital Region Military Research Competition. The awardees are selected by a panel of judges based on their scoring of the candidates’ oral presentations. This award was proposed in 2009 by the Responsible Conduct of Research Service at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the Joint Task Force (J-7) research working group to honor the memory of CAPT R. Phillips, MC, USN. CAPT Phillips was a distinguished medical scientist who played a key role in the establishment of Navy Medical Research Units throughout the world. He is credited with the development of an oral rehydration solution used to treat patients with cholera and other diarrheal illnesses. His work was described as a relatively simple, highly effective glucose-based treatment method used by medical caregivers around the globe, resulting in the saving of millions of lives annually. The Robert A. Phillips award was first presented in April 2010.
