National Archives’ Native Communities Program Instructions for Tagging Documents in the National Archives Online Catalog

Instructions:

DECIDE which historic tribe, Native community, or geographic area you want to search. LOG IN (or register and then log in) to the National Archives Online Catalog. SEARCH for documents using the search strategies outlined in the appropriate Native Communities Research Guide for your geographic area. Try several approaches. IDENTIFY the Citizen Archivist tagging code for your Native Community either in the Research Guide or the shortcuts on the right. OPEN a document (or description of a group of documents). TAG the document in the lower left-hand corner with the corresponding Citizen Archivist tagging code.

Tagging MODERN federally recognized Native communities in the Online Catalog Each modern Native Community has its own unique Citizen Archivist Code. If a document or group of documents in the Online Catalog includes a modern community, use the associated Citizen Archivist code to tag the record. This code has been standardized to make the records more easily searched in the future.

Tagging OLDER, MORE HISTORIC records: When tagging a record that only lists a historic name, such as “Delaware,” tag the document with ALL modern Citizen Archivist codes associated with that historic tribe. (Often older documents and other materials simply state the historic name of a tribe or group. This is particularly true in very early materials and Indian treaties.)

Tagging records with MANY TRIBES included: In these instances, tag the record using the Citizen Archivist Code for ALL associated modern communities.

Example: Treaty between the United States and the Delaware, Potawatomi, Miami and Eel River Tribes of Indians at Fort Wayne, Indiana,

The historic communities most likely to have been affected by this treaty were the Munsee Delaware, Unalachtigo Delaware, Unami Delaware, Potawatomi, Miami, and Eel River. The document would be tagged with ALL (NT) tags below.
