DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

In Film Studies:Astrid Jane Treffry-GoatleyThesis Title: The representation and mediation of national identity in the production of post-apartheid South African cinema

Astrid Treffry-Goatley obtained a BA (summa cum laude), BSc (Hons) (cum laude), and an MA (cum laude) in Music from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. After working in the U.K. for two years, at the British Library and Oxford University Press respectively, she decided to further her academic studies and applied to do a PhD at UCT. In 2007, she was awarded the Andrew W Mellon Research Fellowship to

do a PhD at the Centre for Film and Media Studies at UCT. Her research is on the representation of national identity in post-Apartheid cinema. Through an analysis of relevant film policy, industry structure and specific cinematic texts, Astrid Treffry-Goatley’s PhD thesis aims to trace the intersection between the dynamics of national identity representation and South Africa’s political and economic position as a developing nation in the global marketplace. The research presented took place over a period of three years (2007-2010) and incorporated both quantitative and qualitative methods. Astrid Treffry-Goatley’s PhD thesis draws multiple conclusions, firstly, the results indicate that the neoliberal paradigm evident in the national politico-economic agenda has a continued impact on the development of the film industry where funding is scarce, direct intervention is largely avoided and an export orientated approach dominates state-supported production models. Secondly, those who make successful films in this highly competitive environment tend to do so with local, white or international audiences in mind. Thirdly, the target market of such films tends to curtail the creative self-expression of the artist, with there being specific expectations when it comes to budget, cast, characterisation, narrative content and structure, language and aesthetics. Fourthly, this research indicates that an alternative production model has developed: one that can potentially grant filmmakers greater freedom in cinematic production and dissemination. It functions with less capital, less outside assistance and has a greater focus on the local market. It remains to be seen, however, whether the demographics of the audience and the filmmakers themselves, can expand to include a greater percentage of the black majority, who have been historically excluded from South African cinematic production and consumption. Finally, the results suggest that the national identities represented to audiences on screen are influenced not only by a filmmaker’s personal biases and interpretations, but also by wider socio-economic forces, filmmaking conventions and the production conditions specific to the film at hand.

In French Language and Literature:Naomi Sonia MsusaThesis Title: Le thème de la satire: dans le théâtre Malawien

Naomi Msusa was born in 1976 in the university town of Zomba, southern Malawi. She obtained her BA from the Chancellor College, University of Malawi in 2000 before joining the University of Paris XIII Villetaneuse, France, where she studied Francophone Literature and Comparative Theatre. She obtained a Maîtrise de Lettres Modernes (Masters in Modern Arts) in 2001 and a Diplôme d’Études Approfondies (PGDip) in 2002.She has worked and taught in the UK and Malawi before joining the School of Languages and Literatures of UCT in 2008. Naomi Msusa’s PhD thesis seeks to show how all of the elements inherent in both types of theatre, the theme of satire is a recurrent feature and is often found to be the foundation of both types of theatre. Naomi Msusa’s PhD thesis considers how both traditional and modern theatres explore and exploit satire, and how this theme has contributed to theatre as a whole. It also looks at the history of theatre in Malawi, its role in society as well as the impact it has had on the nation as a whole, for example where it has been used as a social tool. A number of conclusions were drawn from this study. Most important was the fact that Malawian theatre, whether traditional or modern, is mostly didactic, and makes use of satire as a tool. In addition to this, the socio-political conditions especially in the post independence era, when freedom of speech was limited, resulted in the covert use of language in theatre and other arts, making the use of satire indispensible. The application of satire, then, has indeed been a cornerstone of Malawian traditional and modern theatre, and appears to have succeeded in reaching the didactic goals that are expected of satirical theatre.

In Historical Studies:Glorious Bongani GumboThesis Title: Economic and social change in the communities of the wetlands of Chobe and Ngamiland, with special reference to the period since 1960

Glorious Bongani Gumbo obtained an MA degree from the University of Botswana in 2002 and was subsequently appointed as a lecturer at the university in 2003. He has been working towards a PhD in Historical Studies, particularly Economic History, since 2007. Glorius Bongani Gumbo’s PhD thesis examines the post-colonial history of livelihood strategies in the wetlands of northern Botswana, an area remote from much of the rest of the country but a point of contact with Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Instead of focusing on one particular economic activity, the thesis explores the diverse strategies that the people of these wetlands employed alongside one another, including farming, fishing, tourist ventures, and informal trading. Using a wide range of interviews and documentary sources, Glorious Gumbo provides an account of the tensions between these livelihood strategies and the post-colonial state’s attempts to “modernize” the economy of the wetlands. Such attempts at modernization, Glorious Gumbo demonstrates, were ill-adapted to local conditions, lifestyles, and beliefs. They were often influenced by a top-down approach to governing and an authoritarian mindset inherited from colonial rule. Such state interventions were often ineffective, or effective for certain elites rather than for the most vulnerable communities of the wetlands. For these reasons, many people resisted these state-initiated projects.

In Linguistics:*Anna Magdalena LouwThesis Title: Language maintenance and shift among the Rehoboth Basters of Namibia ca. 1868-2008

Anna Louw was born in Cape Town in 1946. She matriculated from the Hoërskool Jan van Riebeeck in Cape Town in 1963 and obtained a BA degree from the University of Stellenbosch in 1967. She went into journalism, becoming a Supreme Court reporter for Die Burger and later a free

lance reporter and columnist. She holds an MA degree from the University of Namibia, where she has lectured on a contract basis. Anna Louw’s PhD thesis is a detailed sociolinguistic documentation of the dilemmas of language maintenance in an increasingly globalised world and within an official language policy that disfavours local languages. In particular it studies the language practices of the Rehoboth Basters of Namibia, a group which traces its lineage to Dutch fathers and Khoikhoi mothers of the 19th Century Cape Colony. Anna Louw’s PhD thesis documents the earlier shift from Dutch to Afrikaans within the community and subsequent accommodations made after their migration to Namibia. It also studies the impact on the community of the change in language policy in independent Namibia, which made English the sole official language in 1990. The main research finding via a mix of qualitative and quantitative investigations is that intergenerational transmission of Afrikaans is at risk among the first post-independence of Afrikaans speakers in Rehoboth. Literacy practices, language attitudes, as well as trends in bilingual speech all point to the increasing dominance of English.
