Australia also participated in the global ‘Signature Recipe Competition’, ‘Pulse Feast’, and ‘Pulse Pledge’ events, hosted one of the global IYP Signature Events, assisted in hosting four official International IYP guest speakers at key activities throughout the year and supplied guest speakers from Australia internationally in return. Finally, Professor Kadambot Siddique from the University of Western Australia was declared a FAO special ambassador for IYP for the Asia – Pacific region. Locally, the support and advocacy from celebrity cook Simon Bryant gave tremendous awareness to pulses on menus nationally. We extend our sincere appreciation to Simon for his contribution to the success of the year and ongoing legacy. Food Security, Nutrition and Innovation During IYP2016, Australia undertook a number of initiatives to highlight the importance pulses will play into the future in addressing healthy eating, food security and dietary requirements. The number of new products that entered the Australian consumer market in 2016 has been widely noted as being much higher than previous years. Innovation in product development was also apparent, with nut and gluten replacement foods being new innovation that rapidly gained attraction with manufacturers and consumers. Edgell, Ward McKenzie and Freedom Foods all released new lines of pulse products into supermarkets nationally. In addition, niche products entered the market via Foods From the Earth, Pangkarra Foods, Eatwell Australia and other smaller paddock to plate producers.

An example of the success in IYP promoting consumptions of pulses through canned pulse sales. Total Pulses within Australia have seen positive growth in movement from shelf in both value and volume over the last 12 months. Value has grown +0.3% in comparison to the previous year to a total value of $58.3, while volume has increased by +7.9% to a total of 20m KGs (as reported by GLNC). It

can be assumed that this increase can be in part attributed to efforts to communicated with health benefits of pulses, combined with the increasing variety of goods on shelves and awareness raising activities.

The Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology (AIFST), as part of the Australian IYP activities, focused it’s 2016 Student Product Development Competition on pulses, with finalists winning products entering the consumer market and competing in the Global IYP Pulse Product Competition. Research into pulses and their nutritional benefits and contribution to food security has also escalated in 2016. Charles Stuart University has lead the way in undertaking specific studies to learn more about the value of pulses, including :

- Sensory properties, puffing and cooking qualities of Australian chickpeas compared to Indian

- Effect of germination on functional properties - Pulse milling fractions using air classification - Fibre extraction using electrospinning - Mechanisms for faba bean extract properties: anti-cancer and anti-fat cell development - Bioactive content of lentils and chickpeas

The University of Western Australia has also contributed by researching the effects of lupin containing foods on blood sugar levels and blood pressure in type 2 diabetes. This research and other international studies were featured at the ‘On the Pulse’ IYP Symposium, an Australian IYP event supported by GLNC. Creating Awareness Australia also had huge success in raising awareness with the general public about pulses. Media monitoring undertaken during the year shows:

- GLNC tracked IYP media coverage from 1 December 2015 to 20 November 2016, with a total of 282 articles, reaching a total of almost 26 million consumers.

- Legumes media coverage increased 51% compared to the prior year. - Social media posting on Facebook reached an excess of 210,000 people

- Following the IYP online Global Launch, Australia’s outreach trended on Twitter for over an hour, an effort that reached in excess of 21 million people globally

- The Australian IYP Launch dinner, held on 28 January 2016, was attended by 330 delegates from across the value chain and was he first stand alone pulse focused event of its kind to be held in Australia.

- Media coverage was evenly split between metro and rural audiences, making the year uniquely collaborative between different population groups.

But perhaps what was most significant about the awareness raised in Australia was the amount of grass roots driven activities. Whilst the National Committee supported the general population to become engaged in IYP through the development

of resource packs, at a local level schools, business and communities developed their own events and communications to promote pulses. Of particular note is George the Farmer, a regional business that developed a suite of education materials for children to learn about pulses. Also, Uniting Care Wesley undertook a program to educate volunteer cooks across South Australia on how to prepare pulses, in an effort to educate disadvantaged communities in cost effective healthy meal preparation.

Productivity and Environmental Sustainability IYP proved the perfect change to draw the focus of the scientific community and engage farmers in the wider value chain of their pulse products. Activities relating to production were as diverse as the population they represented. From regional field days, to metropolitan based production educational plantings and everything in between, the importance of pulses to the Australian planting program was not lost on anybody.

The 2016 harvest data shows just how important pulses are to Australian agriculture. As the following graph shows, the area and yield of Australian pulse production is steadily rising.

With 206 producing a record breaking pulse crop, with over 4 million tonnes of pulses produced and delivered to date to Australian bulk handlers, contributing $3 billion to the national economy, pulses are proving to be the only broad acre crop with a projected growth curve in both yield and value. Activities during 2016 assisted the peak pulse industry body in Australia, Pulse

Australia, to communicate this important information to key stakeholders. As pulses are arguably the most closely linked broader crop to consumers, with a paddock to plate value chain that has minimal manufacturing requirements, the development of an ongoing close working relationship between Pulse Australia and the GLNC was a key success for IYP2016 and will continue to deliver results for the industry into the future. Also, the Australian Pulse Conference highlighted the significant work that has been undertaken in researching pulse production, product stewardship and industry impact nationally and globally. With over 200 pulse researchers and industry value chain representatives from across the globe attending the three day event in Tamworth, years of Australian pulse production improvements were able to be collated and extensively distributed through the vehicle of the international celebrations. Market Access & Stability IYP 2016 was an excellent opportunity to open a dialogue on improving the regulatory framework in which trade occurs. Activities were undertaken with the objective to progress issues such as trade barrier costs that are borne by farmers, processors, traders, and consumers while introducing greater efficiencies to enhance food security, reduce price volatility and enhance the return to growers.

2016 saw Pulse Australia take on a new direction, with a strategic refocus resulting in operational changes. Pulse Australia, taking on global and national requirements, began repositioning the organization to strengthen its role in supply chain integrity, market access and promotion through educating and communicating nationally and internationally on behalf of the Australian pulse industry.

This change stemmed from export trends over the last five yeas, with Australian pulse export values rising to record levels this year, as shown in the table. The diverse market access that Australia holds for pulse exports, as shown in the following breakdown, requires an industry presence that

ensures strong advocacy into the future, to maintain good relationships with other international organisations and governing bodies. Likewise, the Australian Government needs a platform that can communicate to them on current and future industry issues, whilst farmers require a body to represent their needs through the value chain and communicate relevant industry information back down to the farm gate level. Pulse Australia ensured that IYP and the organisation was represented at key market events throughout 2016, including the Australian Grains Industry Conference, at the Global Pulse Conference and through national roadshows to communicate Pulse Australia and IYP strategy activities.

An important outcome from this ceremony was the “Ouagadougou Declaration”, recommending that the UN General Assembly recognize an International Day of Pulses, and calls on all countries to mobilize towards this goal. The declaration can be read here:

http://burkina24.com/2017/02/11/annee-internationale-des-legumineuses-la-declaration-de-ouagadougou/ Canada The IYP2016 Canadian committee’s activities for the International Year of Pulses were diverse, targeting a range of consumers and consumer influencers including healthcare professionals, the food industry, media, chefs, and NGOs. IYP2016 officially launched in Canada on January 6th through Pulse Feast, which took place in Toronto and was attended by over 180 journalists and other consumer influencers. Hosted by Canadian celebrity Chef Michael Smith, the event was covered by many national news outlets. 2016 also saw the launch of a campaign in North America as the result of collaboration between the Canadian and American pulse industries. The campaign generated year-long coverage in the Canadian and American media, resulting in over three billion impressions.

In addition to this campaign, the IYP2016 Canadian Committee partnered with Agriculture in the Classroom Canada to launch a series of programs on pulses in Canadian schools, which reached over 32,000 students. A pulse-themed educational exhibit developed in partnership with the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum traveled to 13 cities across Canada, reaching at least 500,000 consumers. The IYP2016 Canadian committee also worked with

Community Food Centres Canada to integrate pulses into community kitchens, food banks and after-school cooking programs across the country.

day was attended by the National Director of INIA, Julio Kalazich, the National Deputy Director of FIA, María José Etchegaray and FAO Representative in Chile and Deputy Regional Representative, Eve Crowley. The seminar was also attended by local farmers, entrepreneurs, students majoring in agricultural technology and agricultural engineering at INACAP Chillán, and researchers. China

China participated in IYP2016 in a variety of ways, ranging from participating in company dinner events to holding large conferences. The China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Foodstuffs, Native Produce and Animal By-product (CFNA) held the China Pulse Import & Export Industry Conference (CPIEC) 2016 from August 29th to 31st in Dalian City,

Changchun Province. The conference is the only platform where pulse trader, supplier, broker, and processor could meet in China. 2016 CPIEC focused on the Chinese pulse industry situation & global pulse supply and demand. It was a great opportunity to learn about the global pulse industry. The Chinese national committee also participated in Pulse Feast on January 6th, 2016 and Global Pulse Day on January 18th 2017. Additionally, the Chinese national committee celebrated the launch of the World’s Greatest Pulse Dishes on March 1st, 2016. Costa Rica In Costa Rica, renowned researchers and speakers attended the Regional Conference Central American Cooperative Program for Crops and Animal Improvements, which was a meeting to discuss current topics such as regional strategies for food security, mitigation and adaptation to climate change, rural and territorial development, family farm and innovation on agriculture to improve yield through an efficient use of natural resources such as soil, water, non traditional crops. The LXI PCCMCA, or Regional Conference Central American Cooperative Program for Crops and Animal Improvements, took place in San Jose between April 5th and 8th. It was organised by

INTA (Instituto Nacional de Innovación y Transferencia en Tecnología Agropecuaria). The meeting gathered 300 attendees from many countries in the region, including Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Mexico, to discuss regional strategies for food security and climate change mitigation and adaptation. The conference celebrated the International Year of Pulses with a special event that had speakers from important organizations, such as Daniel Debouck from CIAT, Timothy Porch from USDA, and Rosemary Castro, from FAO in Costa Rica. After the event, the Ministry of Health in Costa Rica announced that the annual initiative called “Week of Health” will be dedicated to the International Year of Pulses this year. Many activities will take place from May 9-15 in the country to raise awareness of the benefits of beans, lentils, chickpeas and dry peas. The hope - with events like this – is to garner more support from governments. Colombia Activities started on January 6th, when Aburra shared a special lunch with pulses as the main ingredient on the company installations with some employees.

The Colombian campaigns and activities had two very clear approaches: communication and availability. • Communication: They had two messages in their communication strategy, the first one was the nutritional benefits of pulses and the other one was the practicality and versatility of pulses with some recipes and different

kinds of dishes. • Availability: They checked all areas of influence, checking that all of clients had a

wide variety of pulses as possible in their stores.

Many of the activities in Colombia were from the sales point activations, tastings, “clubs de amigos,” to social media activations and in-store events. Colombia ended IYP2016 on January 25th, 2017. 23 employees with Aburrá met at one of the most traditional restaurants in the city and shared a special lunch featuring pulses.

Egypt In Egypt, members of the national committee engaged their local communities to celebrate the International Year of Pulses. On March 7th the Egyptian National Committee celebrated fasting season for The Copts Christian Orthodox by eating only pulses and vegetables for 55 days starting March 7th and ended by celebrating the Eastern Church Easter during the first week May. Later that year, on June 10th, a large portion of their community began fasting for Ramadan. Many cooperatives, charities and people in business donated a Ramadan package that included lentils, faba beans, white beans and more.

Ethiopia On November 18th, the Ethiopian launch of IYP2016 was at the Ethiopian Pulses Oilseeds & Spices Processors – Exporters Association’s (EPOSPEA) yearly conference. This conference was organized together with the Ministry of Trade and Alpha Trading Partners P.L.C. with the aim of attracting international buyers for pulse products. Hakan Bahceci represented GPC at the event and spoke about IYP2016. Ethiopia also completed its LovePulses Competition on Jan 25th, 2016. France Throughout the International Year of Pulses 2016, France kept busy hosting numerous events across the country that encouraged the growth of pulses and educated its citizens on the benefits of eating and growing pulses. Overall France held a high ranking of 17 registered events. The INRA was an integral part of this campaign participating actively in the work of the IYP Thematic Area Productivity and Sustainability, as well as hosting and presenting at numerous events, both in and outside of France. Notably, INRA, CIRAD, Terres Univia and Terres Inovia hosted the IYP Signature Event: the First Francophone Pulse Encounters Rencontres Francophones sur les légumineuses May 31 to June 1 in Dijon, with the participation of over 270 actors in the pulse research and business communities. INRA also contributed with two presentations to the meeting of the International Society of Vegetables in Troia, Portugal which was held in October, 2016, and assisted with the preparation of a keynote presentation at the Congress of the European Society Agronomy in Edinburgh, Scotland in September. The INRA also took an active role in organizing and speaking at numerous seminars throughout France. Some of these included a presentation on legumes organized by the French Academy of Agriculture, a research seminar on the importance of participatory research on legumes, and a day long presentation on the place of legumes in agricultural systems which was organized by the Walloon Federation of Agriculture, the Union of Agriculturists of Wallonia, the Federation of Young Farmers and the Collective Food Strategies. As well as participating in these seminars there was also a numerous articles the INRA assisted in writing on topics such as agricultural innovations for Agricultural Systems, writing two articles for Ecological Economics on the analysis of the socio-technical system (with the assistance of M.B. Magrini), and assisting in the development of an article for the OCL on the adaptation of peas to climate change, to which they also helped to develop the framework of a project on the cultivation of winter peas and designing ideotypes that will adapt to climate change.

The International Year of Pulses also held many firsts for this group. There was the launch of the INRA’s new group of leguminous seeds, which was co-chaired by M.B. Magrini, the participation in the 1st symposium on Alfalfa Organization by COOP de France. The Members of the Fédération Nationale des Légumes Secs FNLS (The French Pulse Association) also had a large handle in promoting the International Year of Pulses across the country. Founded in 1945, the FNLS works to represent, defend and promote the farming and buying of pulses. It brings together 18 countries that market approximately 60,000 tonnes of pulses a year. In February 2016, the FNLS launched a national communications campaign around the “Super Légumes Secs” (super-pulses) to promote pulses in the country. It was initiated with a press conference that was held at the Ministry of Agriculture. The FAO spoke there and presented IYP. Nations. The campaign featured a new website and new communication tools, including recipes, to promote pulses. The FNLS also partnered with the Avril Foundation by contributing three episodes, which were dedicated to the education of legumes on the program L’Esprit Sorcier, which aired multiple times on Campaign TV and online. Greece Greece participated in IYP2016 in a number of ways. An extremely talented Gourmet Guru, Argiro Barbarigou, created a delicious dish in celebration of IYP and the Greek World’s Greatest Pulse Dish of Lentil Soup was a fan favourite. Additionally, in between January 22nd, 2016 and May 5th, 2016, there was a National School Contest for International Year of Pulses.

India India Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA), is the nodal industry body for the country’s pulses and grains trade. Comprising of 300 members, including many regional associations, it represents over 10,000 stakeholders in the supply chain. The Association has positioned itself as a key facilitator of the trade and governments, both Indian and international. IPGA is recognized and supported by important stakeholders in the Indian government like the Ministries of Consumer Affairs, Agriculture, and Finance as well as National Associates and Global Pulse Confederation (CICILS).

In 2016 the Chief Economic Advisor of the Government of India published a crucial report on pulses, where IPGA’s contribution was acknowledged. This alignment with the government has facilitated crucial policy-making and encouraged a more favourable business environment for the trade in the country. IPGA wants to extend its role across the national borders and bring together the pulses and grains industry of South Asia. In pursuance of its objectives, IPGA will seek to address issues that impact production, productivity, and marketability of pulses across the region. The 68th UN General Assembly had declared 2016 as the International Year of Pulses (IYP2016). Taking forward the mandate in India, IPGA conducted a number of activities to support IYP2016. In accordance with its vision, IPGA organized activities, both for the farmer and the trade. The farmer-focused activities included IPGA’s “Water Resource Revival Project” in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra State. The project seeks to assist farmers by providing them long-term solutions, enabling them to get market access and appropriate price discovery of their produce. Around 10 villages were adopted by IPGA for this project. The trade focused activities included organization of The Pulses Conclave, the world’s largest international conference for the pulses sector, and connecting with both international government bodies and traders keen on exporting pulses to India. FARMER FOCUSED ACTIVITIES IPGA WATER RESOURCE REVIVAL PROJECT

In 2016 IPGA initiated a “Water Resource Revival Project” in the Marathwada region of western India. This region is one of the leading pulse producing areas in India. Over the last three years, the region has faced consecutive drought leading to severe depletion of the water table causing large silting in most riverbeds and canals.

Water is a key requirement for farming and IPGA’s “Water Resource Revival Project” has helped the farmers create and build sufficient water reservoirs to enable production. The project was

inaugurated by Shri Raosaheb Patil Danve, the Honourable Member of Parliament and the Maharashtra State President of BJP from Bhokardan. The project involved an excavation of riverbeds and canals in 10 villages across the talukas (sub-districts) of Bhokardan and Phulambri. With over 400,000 cubic meters of excavation, a storage capacity of over 40 crore litres and a percolation capacity of over 100 crore litres of water was created for the farming community. IPGA adopted the DOH model for the excavation process. In this process, multiple pockets of about 300 meters in length at a distance of 10 to 15 meters were created within the riverbed/canal. These pockets capture the water which then percolates into the surrounding soil replenishing the water table. The widening and deepening of the riverbed/canal in each village was done around 2 km to 3 km in length, across the entire span of the water body and 2.5 meters to 3 meters deep. The span of the riverbeds vary from 25 meters to 65 meters. A total of 400,000 cubic meters of excavation of river beds/canals has been done creating a storage capacity of 40 crore litres. Three infiltrations of the cached water will percolate over 100 crore litres of water into the land around these sites. The excellent monsoon this year has strengthened the excavation project and helped the

farmers. The project will, directly and indirectly, benefit close to 25 villages and over 150,000 villagers in Bhokardan and Phulambri talukas (sub-districts). The improved water table level and continuous availability of water will ensure that farmers have

sufficient supply for irrigation, leading to increased sowing and production of pulses in the area. The increased farming activity will also generate employment and reduce migration to nearby towns and cities.

While the “Water Resource Revival Project” is the first such initiative by IPGA, there are plans to create additional activities and continue the engagement with the districts of Bhokardan and Phulambri. ASSOCIATION WITH THE NAAM FOUNDATION

In line with its objectives to assist Indian farmers in increasing their yield and production IPGA has joined hands with the NAAM Foundation. Led by noted actors and theatre personalities Nana Patekar and Makarand Anaspure, the NAAM Foundation has been working for the welfare of farmers and development of rural areas. IPGA has assured the foundation of all necessary support and cooperation in their efforts to assist the farming communities across the country.

As a part of this initiative, the NAAM Foundation will attempt to put together clusters of land parcels owned by farmers so that advanced farming techniques with better quality seeds can be used for cultivation. IPGA, on its part, will support the farmers with seed, fumigant, and fertilizer procurement, as well as other research-based requirements. It will be the endeavor of the association to bring on board machinery manufacturers so that mechanized farming can be done in these land parcels. Members of the association will support the farmers by purchasing pulses cultivated by them. The purchase price will not only cover the cost of production but also ensure that the farmer makes a reasonable profit.

funds for doing additional work under the “Water Resource Revival Project” and our investment in the work with the NAAM Foundation will be significant as well. Issues like domestic production, malnutrition, consumer education and ease-of-trade have to be still effectively addressed. Towards this, IPGA has already initiated activities like the National Pulses Seminar to be held on March 25th in Kolkata on ways to increase domestic production of pulses; working with the Ministry of Agriculture to address the long pending issue of Methyl Bromide fumigation and removing the ban on the exports of pulses, to name a few. IPGA has also started the initial planning for the fourth edition of The Pulses Conclave to be held in February 2018 in the national capital, New Delhi. Ireland Pulse Power has been the theme of the year! 2016 has been great for pulses in Ireland and there has been increased attention and interest in using pulses and pulse recipes. The people of Ireland are beginning to recognise the use of pulses in everyday cooking and how protein and other valuable nutrients can be absorbed without the addition of meat. In truth, even though we aren’t vegetarian, we agree that some of the tastiest food we have eaten in the past year has come from dishes containing pulses. The flexibility of pulses is something that should appeal to all home cooks. A very successful “Veggie Week” was run and encouraged followers to take part by posting up some vegetarian recipes to highlight the power of the pulse.

At least 2 tastings in-store were completed every week of our own delicious product; Cool Beans and created “Beaneology” cards to highlight the benefits of eating beans! Overall, there was a spreading of the bean love in a way that was delicious and highlighting the excellent healthy benefits such as fibre content that beans and pulses have in general. Traditionally Ireland is considered a big meat eating country. However, education in the food industry has seen the rise of new restaurants promoting healthier, sustainable pulse dishes and this trend will continue in 2017. Many of Ireland’s social media influencers share wonderful dishes using tasty ingredients such as chickpeas, lentils, beans etc. The digital age allows many of these

influencers to shape the habits of thousands of the Irish people who are logged on the whole time. Over the course of the year, our pulse-related posts have reached around 62,000 people on Facebook. In addition, around €10,000 throughout the year through events, social media, recipes & tastings was spent on promoting pulses within just one company. It is all about education around pulse use, the benefits of pulses and also the sustainability element. Italy

With the Food and Agricultural Organization’s (FAO) headquarters in Rome, Italy, there were a number of IYP2016 related events but, many other people in Italy participated actively in IYP2016. Morocco Morocco hosted many events to celebrate IYP2016 including the International Conference on Pulses in Dryland Areas, from April 18-20 in Marrakech, a Signature Event. The conference discussed various issues related to the contributions of pulses to food and nutritional security, ecosystem health through their carbon footprint and nitrogen fixation. The conference focused on Central and West Asia, and North Africa. Additionally, Morocco hosted one of the LovePulses Product Showcase Product Showcase Competition. Myanmar Pulses celebrated IYP2016 in mamny ways. The first key event celebrating IYP2016 took place on January 22nd at the Bayintnaung Commodity Exchange, in Myanmar. Myanmar also celebrated Global Pulse Day on January 18th, 2016.

Netherlands The Netherlands Committee focused their campaign on using the optimal power of the so-called the “Golden Triangle”: a co-operation between pulse producers, retail and influencers/stakeholders to generate social pressure for the pulses. The objective was to improve the image of pulses in the Netherlands and to make them ‘sexy’ again. The consumption of pulses in the Netherlands is very low and needs to be doubled in 2020 to 10 grams per person per day. Quite a challenge! Tools were focused on information, trial and inspiration. It all began on 10 November, 2015 with a big pulse dinner for pulse ambassadors, the “Pulse Allies”; people from the press, bloggers, health and sustainability endorsers, the food institutions and retail. to ‘spread the beautiful pulse story together with us’ and they did, massively. In total the Netherlands Committee reached a PR value of 6 million euros, spread among various publications on national and regional channels, newspapers, food blogs, magazines etc. A great deal of activities focused on giving inspiration via recipes and to have people experience themselves that pulses are a delicious base for a meal, with so much variety. This was achieved through recipe booklets, co-operation with caterers, a food truck, a pop-up store for pulses and a theme week at the biggest retailer in the Netherlands, Albert Heijn. In 2015/2016 there were a few happenings in the Netherlands that helped push pulses forward. In November 2015, the Health Council (Gezondheidsraad) issued their new guidelines for healthy nutrition. In these guidelines, they stressed the good aspects of pulses and advised to eat pulses at least once a week. In March 2016 the Food Center (Voedingscentrum – the most important government institution on communication about healthy food) issued their new guidelines for healthy food (the so called “Schijf van Vijf”) with extra attention on pulses. These two external events strengthened the communication message about all the good aspects of pulses. It was a great year! With a joint effort, 6 million euros were realized in PR-value for pulses and the category grew by no less than 13%! Especially the exotic pulses profited from the growth, but also traditional pulses were successful during the IYP2016. A big compliment should be given to the pulse producers in the Netherlands who put aside their brand goals/competitive power and invested in category communication. Their belief in a joint approach was truly inspiring and created a positive energy that pushed the pulses forward! Norway Highlighting pulses during the International Year of Pulses in 2016 meant continuing work with information about cultivation and consummation. The focus was on the benefits for both people and planet. First to mention is the event hosted on the 28th of August celebrating the International Kitchen Garden Day. Pulses were the overall topic this

The competition consisted of photos taken from projects in garden or kitchen including pulses. Children’s programs invited to puppet theater with “Jack the Giant Slayer.” The exhibition showed the diversity of seeds from pulses and at the end a lentil soup was served. Another lecture on pulses in general and the intensions of the activities in IYP2016 was held on the 5th of March for the Norwegian Horticultural Society at the annual meeting for the region of Moere and Romsdal. The Farmers Association was invited to give a lecture on the unique role that pulses play in organic farming on the 28th of September. This lecture was held in the open air during the annual Organic Week, which is a national initiative consisting of 13 organizations (NGOs) reaching quite a broad audience and bearing quite a broad support from business live. Presentation, quiz and appetizer was given at the Regional Annual Cattle Show on the 2nd of September. This as part of the program targeted young pupils tending secondary school aiming more than 500 pupils. Another participation at Ecofestival 20th and 21st of August handed out recipes with pulses for a week, exhibited literature and seeds. The festival had 7000 visitors. The institution runs a net page, Agropub, for knowledge on agronomy and organic farming, where the target group is producers, advisers, students and teachers. Several items related to IYP2016 were uploaded here. There was an overview and presentation of research in Norway and across Europe. Another article hinting how pulses are the core stone in organic farming and why. A report on four new books covering both cultivation of and cooking with pulses was posted here as well. The items were published in other Norwegian medias or distributed during the mentioned events above.

Singapore The International Year of Pulses was the best platform where the pulses traders came together and founded the Singapore Pulses Federation Limited (SPFL) in 2016. The main aim of the association was to promote Singapore as a major pulses trading hub, to develop potential markets and networking opportunities for members, work closely with global pulses associations and raise awareness of pulse contribution to food security, nutrition, and as an environmentally friendly crop. A special pulse feast was organized on the 6th of January 2016 to celebrate Global Pulse Day at the Singapore Cricket Club with SPFL members to network and try out pulse based foods from all over the world. On the occasion of Pongal festival, SPFL distributed pulses at the Perumal temple in Singapore to raise awareness about the benefits of pulses. The event was organised by Little India Shop Owners Association of Singapore and was graced by Senior Minister of State Ms. See Ann.

The committee participated and represented SPFL at global platforms which benefit the members. The SPFL board of directors attended the Global Pulses Convention in Turkey. At the GAFTA Trade and Trends Forum in Singapore, they spoke about the importance of pulses in the meal and position pulses as a primary source of protein and other essential nutrients with growing consumption worldwide. and its members on the 2nd of November 2016. The event was a good opportunity to talk about the future of food and pulses. The committee emphasized the importance of pulses in the meal to elderly people and children. They also donated pulses to food banks and other charitable organizations in Singapore. The Singapore National Committee also shared the school lessons program to schools across Singapore to teach the children about the nutritional value of the pulses. It is important to continue the legacy of IYP2016 and continue the promotion of pulses across the globe. Singapore will continue to promote consumption of pulses as a means to improve global food security and support agri-food entrepreneurs to use pulses as ingredients in food products. South Africa South Africa celebrated IYP2016 in a number of ways and engaged individuals throughout the value chain. On April 18th, South Africa launched the International Year of Pulses in Cape Town at a Greek called restaurant Mezepoli. Guests included Nuala Lawlor, the Trade Commissioner of the Canadian High Commission, media, pulse partners and clients. The menu demonstrated the versatility and flavour of many pulse dishes, including falafel, bean salads, hummus, chickpea and pasta rice, as well as a warm lentil salad. David Lever of AGT Foods Africa presented the benefits of pulses to the global community, which include sustainability, health, water and the environment. Maryke Gallagher, president of the Association for Dietetics in South Africa (ADSA), spoke about the many health benefits of pulses. Guests received a copy of the newly launched pulse recipe book, Just so Easy, which features many interesting pulse recipes.

Later that year, as part of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the Department of Science and Technology (DST) in South Africa has been mandated to include IYP2016 on its 2016 calendar. Its first initiative will be to educate children on the importance of pulses in their diets. The South African National Committee embarked on a roadshow to science centres and schools around the country, aimed at kids aged 8 to 14 years. “Because pulses are so beneficial to people and our planet, the DST aims to motivate our youth to eat them,” says AGT Foods Africa spokesperson Dean Miller. The department visited schools

Strong partnerships have been formed with campaigning groups who share the UK National Committee’s goal of increasing Pulse consumption in diets: Eating Better Alliance, Friends of the Earth, World Wildlife Fund, Meat-Free Mondays, Vegetarian Society and Protein Challenge 2040. These partners opened their networks for the committee to publicize events, blogs and recipes During the year, they recruited Princes Foods, a major UK canner & food manufacturer, to adopt the global pulse logo which is appearing on over 80 million cans of pulses. The national committee produced various videos of their activities, now posted to YouTube: UK launch event Jan 16th 2016/ London Falafel Festival/ Fababeans: From Field to Fork/ Pulse Feast 2017/ Recipe videos: Chicken Thighs with Fababeans/ Party dips made from Pulses. Now 2016 is over, they are planning follow-on events including the 2nd London Falafel Festival for May 2017. Thanks to UK industry members who worked on the campaign & gave tirelessly of their efforts: Andy Bury, Marcus Coles & Milan Shah, more recently joined by Franek Smith, Jeremy Issacs, Justin Askew and Lucie Heritage. We acknowledge the support of BEPA (British Edible Pulse Association) and GAFTA (Grain & Feed Trade Association) for their logistical support throughout the campaign. The United States of America The 2016 International Year of Pulses (IYP2016) proved to be an incredible launching pad for pulse awareness in the United States. In fact, before IYP2016 many U.S. consum ers had never associated the term “pulse” with peas, lentils, chickpeas and beans. The CEO of the USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council and the American Pulse Association, Tim McGreevy, had this to say about IYP2016, “The impact of our IYP2016 activities was incredible. in both our domestic and international markets.” McGreevy concluded, “I believe we are at the beginning of a pulse revolution in the food industry”. IYP2016 fostered a historic joint marketing campaign in North American between pulse industry organizations in the United States and Canada. In the first six months of the IYP North American pulse marketing campaign the awareness of the term “pulses” increased from 17% to 25%. Pulse acreages in the U.S. in 2016 increased 35%. United States pulse exports broke new records. In 2016, food manufacturers in the U.S. launched 1,200 new food products featuring pulse crops. The U.S. pulse revolution started with a launch in New York City at the United Nations Headquarters. The resulting media coverage was impressive, and marked the beginning of a year that proved to be a game changer for pulse crop awareness in America. The pulse crop coalition offered consumers the opportunity to take a Pulse Pledge, a 10-week journey to wellness through increased pulse consumption. Over 56,000 consumers took the pledge and received the weekly pulse newsletter filled with recipes, tips, and information while the pulsepledge.com website experienced over 2.5 million page views with nearly 830,000 unique visitors. Through relationships with food industry influencers, blog ambassadors, and digital advertising pulses gained over 3.4 billion social media impressions, reached over 158 million North American consumers, and was named one of the top trending food groups by the Today Show. The millennial influencer website, Popsugar called pulses “the year’s hottest ingredient.” Exclusive to the USA pulse industry, the USADPLC/APA hosted a similar launch on the West coast, held at the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley, California. This two-day educational seminar targeted a group of 40 media representatives, resulting in 160 posts during the event reaching an estimated 7 million viewers. Aside from the consumer pulse awareness campaign, the USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council in collaboration with the American Pulse Association reached out to the scientific community as well. To ring in the conclusion of IYP2016, the USADPLC/APA held a Global Pulse Day event in New York in January of 2017, honoring the United Nations designation of IYP2016, and celebrating a renewed beginning for pulse crops in the United States. Between February 28th and March 4th was the Pan African Grain Legume and World Cowpea Conference, the first conference dedicated to boosting pulse productivity, nutrition and processing in Africa. The 400 academics, NGOs, and scientists gathered to turn around the lack of investment in agricultural research and development, which is handicapping the ability of poor, smallholder African farmers to fight climate change, boost productivity and feed their families. #Legumes4Africa was the theme for the Pan African Grain Legume and Cowpea Conference. It focused on grain legumes because of their potential to play a significant role in delivering against the UN’s new SDGs – especially Zero Hunger, Good Health & Wellbeing and Life on land.
