Argentine writer, essayist, and poet

appointed director of the National Public Library and professor of Literature at the University of BA

received the 1st International Publishers Prize and the Jerusalem Prize

most famous books: Ficciones and the Aleph

works fell into the category of magical realism

had a tremendous influence on Spanish-language literature

Mate

traditional South American infused drink

made by steeping dried yerba mate leaves in hot water

normally drunk out of a hollowed out gourd with a special metal straw that acts as a sieve as well

traditionally drunk in a particular social setting such as family gatherings or with friends

groups of people all drink from the same gourd, passing it around in a circle

drinking mate is considered to be good for the body and good for the soul

is thought to have significant cancer-fighting ability

Argentine Tango

is both a social dance and musical genre written in 4/4 measure

lyrics and music is marked by nostalgia

4 representative schools or the Argentine tango music: Di Sarl, D’Arienzo, Trollo, and Pugliese

dancing consists of a variety of styles that developed in different regions and eras

danced in an embrace, essentially walked with a partner to the music

tango dancing relies heavily on improvisation because there is no “basic step”
