“I was riding high,” she smiled. “Given some of my choices as a kid, my picture could have been hanging on the wall at the post office!

“But in 2011, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor that required major surgery. I still

see the doctor every four months. The Good Lord got my attention and began to work on my priorities and unresolved issues from my past. I began visiting my old nemesis—the Natchez Children’s Home—and reconnecting with the staff and my past.

“I came to value the lessons learned, the friends made, and the sad and sweet memo-ries of my childhood. Because NCHS was my home, for a large part of my childhood, I

“Do you ever hear from former residents of the Home?”

“Yes,” I answer to this FAQ (Frequently Asked Question).

Chassity Cannon is a great example and her story is a remarkable one. “Chas” be-came a seven year old resident of (then) Nat-chez Protestant Home in May, 1980. She was scared, angry, confused, and determined that her stay at 806 North Union Street would be a short one.

During the ensuing ten years, she grew up fast. She shared a large room with sev-eral other little girls, ran away, was returned, moved into foster care, shoplifted, had several appearances in Adams County Judge John Hudson’s Youth Court, lived briefly with each of her divorced parents, got married and divorced, and miraculously graduated from high school.

After three minimum wage ($3.35 per hour) jobs, she enrolled in an online college program through Penn State University and received a BA degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising in 1993.

She also began learning the real estate business and answered a newspaper ad announcing Wells Fargo was opening a Natchez office. She applied and got the job over 100 other applicants.

In 1999 she began working in an on-call position with Edward Jones Investments and in 2002 became employed full time with Tommy McDonald’s Natchez office.

She is now in a senior position with Ed-ward Jones and is part of the leadership and training team.

In 2010 she received the Edward Jones “Profiles in Caring” award—one of only twenty employees nationally—for exemplary

have found ways to help the at-risk chil-dren being served there today.”

In December, 2012, Chassity opened Cha’ Mere’—a gift shop with select vendors including Natchez Children’s Home Services. Cha’ Mere’ is a French word meaning “a place of gathering.” The shop is located at 110 North Union Street, ironically just a few blocks south of 806 North Union Street!

“Although we don’t accept clothing, we take other items including furniture,

with a Purpose” ($14.95). “In facing my fears—both from the

past and future, I have found that doing something for others is the most thera-peutic thing I can do,” she said.

Cha’ Mere’ is open Tuesday through Saturday. For information on how you can participate call Chassity Cannon at 601-445-5929, go to Cha’ Mere’ on Face-book, or email [email protected].

All donated items designated for the Natchez Children’s Home Services booth are tax deductible and when they are sold, proceeds are forwarded to NCHS to help fund the Children’s Advocacy Center, Preschool Learning Center, Counseling Center, and at-risk children and families.

Cha’ Mere’ also sells the NCHS cook-book “Yum-m-m!” ($20) and “Angels

Mississippi Becomes 6th State to Pass Erin’s Law

Erin Merryn was six years old when a neighbor sexually abused her. “I was taught how to take cover

in a storm, stop, drop and roll out of a burning building, evacuate a school bus. . . but where was the drill on how to escape a child molester?” says Merryn.

Miss Merryn is now 28 and on a mis-sion to pass Erin’s Law in all 50 states. She visited the Mississippi State Capitol in January where she met with child ad-vocates and legislators on House Bill 200 and Senate Bill 2133.

“A child is sexually assaulted every 6 minutes in this country. One in every four girls and one in every seven boys

foster and adoptive parents, and agen-cy staff who work with at risk children and families.

will be assaulted by the age of eighteen,” she reported.

The goal of Erin’s Law is to teach children: “Tell on anyone who even tries to touch your private parts.”

Erin Merryn (www.erinmerryn.net) is scheduled to speak at a plenary session of this summer’s “Lookin’ to the Future” conference July 17-19, 2013 at the Natchez Convention Center. The conference is sponsored by Southern Christian Services for Children and Youth and focuses on strengthening the skills and education of social workers, teachers, counselors and therapists,

ABCs Teachers Attend Early Childhood Conference

Dee Thomas, Director, Nicole Sellers,

and Katrica Montgom-ery, teachers in the ABCs Preschool Learn-ing Center, attended an early childhood conference in Mobile, AL in February. The conference was pre-sented by the South-ern Early Childhood Association (SECA) and brought preschool teachers together from across the south to focus on improving the class-room learning environment and teaching children academics through things found in the natural environment around them. As a result, the Palmer Playground at NCHS has become a learning lab, not just a

place of recreation. The children have a flower bed and are watching our vegetable and herb garden grow. The basketball court, riding toys, swings, birdhouses, trees, and play units are all part of the learning experi-ence at NCHS.

Students proudly display their new nap pillows from Mrs. B’s Teas.

Mrs. B’s Nap PillowsMrs. Barbara Brown of Lebanon,

Oregon, provided handmade nap pillows for all the ABCs Preschool Learning Center students. She operates “Mrs. B’s Teas” a specialty shop in Lebanon. Mrs. Brown is Karla Brown’s stepmother. Karla, our longtime friend who walked across the United States for epilepsy awareness, is now living in Natchez and has helped extend interest in Natchez Children’s Home Services all the way to the west coast! The children love their colorful pillows and use them each day after lunch during quiet time.

Director of the ABCs Preschool Learning Center Dee Thomas teaches preschoolers out on the playground.

“What do you need at Natchez Children’s Home Services?” is a question often asked of NCHS staff and board members.

“Everything you need to operate your household and office, just in bigger quantities!” is the answer.

The devotion of Children’s Club members over the last 25 years has made those “bigger quantities” a reality. Monthly Children’s Club donations (on-line at www.ntzchs.org) or through the mail (P. O. 2028, Natchez, MS 39121), or using an automatic bank

draft (form above) ensures that NCHS will always have gasoline, water, play equipment, lights, snacks and meals, a safe and insured building and grounds, laundry powder, computers, staff training, smoke detectors, car seats . . . the list is endless.

Children’s Club gifts are tax deductible, receipted promptly, and used wisely to meet the mission of “Saving Lives, One Child at a Time.”

Joe Mitchell, former NCHS Director of Development, continues to maintain his contact with NCHS by leading short-term trips to Guatemala and Peru. In early March

he brought Armando Trujillo to the area to perform a trumpet concert and share about the work in Guatemala. If you or your group would like to participate in a future trip, contact Joe Mitchell at [email protected] or Nancy Hungerford at [email protected] for more information.

The first friendly voice you hear when you dial 601-442-6858, is almost always Office Manager Elizabeth Dun-ham. She has been offering assistance, forwarding calls,

taking messages and welcoming guests at 806 North Union Street since 2003.

“Liz” grew up in Natchez and worked at Friends of Chil-dren of MS, Inc. before joining the NCHS team.

She is focused, organized, and conscientious in her duties that include record keeping, mail management, generating receipts and letters of thanks, welcoming and touring visitors, organizing and ordering supplies, answering thousands of questions, updating staff files, participating in various fundrais-ers, managing financial donations and supervising bookkeeping and volunteers.

Liz is the mother of Eric “Cateye” Dunham. She is an active member of Rose Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where

she sings in the senior choir and teaches Sunday school. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, listening to jazz mu-sic, playing with her dog “Jer-sey”, and walking the hills of the Natchez Bluffs.

Her gift of hospitality at the front door of NCHS comes from one of her favorite Bible verses: “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers; for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.“ Hebrews 13:2

The NCHS Board, staff and children love Liz and appreciate her decade of service.

Spring Break at NCHSSpring Break Volunteers Complete Long Chore List!

Springtime has become a season of visitors, work projects and Southern hospitality at Natchez Children’s Home Services.

During March and April volunteers from Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, Boston University, and Camptown in Indianapolis, Indiana, spend their school Spring Break week in Natchez.

This year the young people sorted items in the Thrift Shop, washed vehicles, tutored ABCs children, prepared the garden, cleaned the building, repaired two porches, poured cement, glazed windows, and prepared food. During the evening, the visitors attended Spring Pilgrimage events and toured Natchez.

Our friends at Community Chapel Church and Crosspoint Church housed the students in their family life centers. Thank you to both congregations for “bed and breakfast” accommodations.

Hosting Spring Break Alternative groups has become a tradition at NCHS—and the children and staff look forward to their arrival each year. Many projects on our always long “to-do” list are completed, and many new friendships are made.

Thank you, Boston University, Agnes Scott College, and Camptown!
