NASDAQ was also the first stock mar- ket in the United States to start trading online, highlight- ing NASDAQ-traded companies (usually in technology) and closing with the declaration that NASDAQ is “the stock market for the next hundred years.” Its main index is the NASDAQ Composite, which has been published since its inception. However, its exchange-traded fund tracks the large-cap NASDAQ-100 index, which was in- troduced in 1985 alongside the NASDAQ 100 Financial Index. Until 1987, most trading occurred via the telephone. During the October 1987 stock market crash, however, market makers often did not answer their phones. To remedy this, the Small Order Execution System (SOES) was established. SOES provides an electronic method for dealers to enter their trades. NASDAQ requires market makers to honor trades executed using SOES. In 1992, NASDAQ joined with the London Stock Ex- change to form the first intercontinental linkage of securities markets. The National Association of Securi- ties Dealers spun off NASDAQ in 2000 to form a publicly traded company, the NASDAQ Stock Market, Inc. In 2006, the status of NASDAQ was changed from a stock market to a licensed national securities exchange. 1 History

In 1972,NASDAQ stood forNational Association of Se-curities Dealers Automated Quotations.[4] NASDAQwas founded in 1971 by the National Association of Secu-rities Dealers (NASD),[5] which divested itself of NAS-DAQ in a series of sales in 2000 and 2001. NASDAQ isowned and operated by the The NASDAQ OMX Group, the stocks of which were listed on its own stock exchangebeginning July 2, 2002, under the ticker symbol NDAQ.When the NASDAQ began trading on February 8, 1971,it was the worlds rst electronic stock market. At rst, itwas merely a quotation system and did not provide a wayto perform electronic trades.[6] The NASDAQ helpedlower the spread (the dierence between the bid price andthe ask price of the stock) but was unpopular among bro-kerages which made much of their money on the spread.

NASDAQ eventually assumed the majority of majortrades formerly executed by the over-the-counter (OTC)system of trading, although there are still numerous se-curities traded in this fashion. As late as 1987, the NAS-DAQ exchange was still commonly referred to as OTCin media and also in the monthly Stock Guides issued byStandard & Poors Corporation.Over the years, NASDAQ became more of a stock mar-ket by adding trade and volume reporting and automatedtrading systems. NASDAQ was also the rst stock mar-ket in the United States to start trading online, highlight-ing NASDAQ-traded companies (usually in technology)and closing with the declaration that NASDAQ is thestock market for the next hundred years. Its main indexis the NASDAQ Composite, which has been publishedsince its inception. However, its exchange-traded fundtracks the large-cap NASDAQ-100 index, which was in-troduced in 1985 alongside the NASDAQ 100 FinancialIndex.Until 1987, most trading occurred via the telephone.During the October 1987 stock market crash, however, market makers often did not answer their phones. Toremedy this, the Small Order Execution System (SOES)was established. SOES provides an electronic method fordealers to enter their trades. NASDAQ requires marketmakers to honor trades executed using SOES.In 1992, NASDAQ joined with the London Stock Ex-change to form the rst intercontinental linkage ofsecurities markets. The National Association of Securi-ties Dealers spun oNASDAQ in 2000 to form a publiclytraded company, the NASDAQ Stock Market, Inc.In 2006, the status of NASDAQ was changed from astock market to a licensed national securities exchange.[7]

To qualify for listing on the exchange, a company must beregistered with the United States Securities and ExchangeCommission (SEC), must have at least three market mak-ers (nancial rms that act as brokers or dealers for spe-cic securities) and must meet minimum requirementsfor assets, capital, public shares, and shareholders. In February 2011, in the wake of an announced mergerof NYSE Euronext with Deutsche Brse, speculation de-veloped that NASDAQ OMX and Intercontinental Ex-change (ICE) could mount a counter-bid of their ownfor NYSE. $9.45 billion.[8] Late in the month, Nasdaq was reportedto be considering asking either ICE or the Chicago Mercto join in what would probably have to be, if it proceeded,an $1112 billion counterbid.[9]

The European Association of Securities Dealers Auto-matic Quotation System (EASDAQ) was founded origi-nally as a European equivalent to NASDAQ. It was pur-chased by NASDAQ in 2001 and became NASDAQ Eu-rope. Operations were shut down, however, as a result ofthe burst of the dot-com bubble. In 2007, NASDAQ Eu-rope was revived as Equiduct, and is currently operatingunder Brse Berlin.[10]

On June 18, 2012, NASDAQ became a founding mem-ber of the United Nations Sustainable Stock Exchangesinitiative on the eve of the United Nations Conference onSustainable Development (Rio+20).[11]

In 2013, NASDAQ OMX was approached by private eq-uity rm Carlyle Group about taking the exchange oper-ator private, but the talks fell apart over a disagreementon price.[12]

The NASDAQ Global Select Marketconsists of 1,200 stocks that meet Nasdaqs strictnancial and liquidity requirements and corporategovernance standards. The Global Market Selectis more exclusive than the Global Market. EveryOctober, the Nasdaq Listing Qualications Depart-ment reviews the Global Market Composite to de-termine if any of its stocks have become eligible forlisting on the Global Select Market.[18][19]
