Principal’s Report

The timing of the school holidays has created quite a time gap since the last newsletter. This is why the May edition is so large...because of all of the great news and student achievement. By the time that you read this, the NAPLAN testing will be completed. I want to emphasize that the purpose of the test is to provide a snapshot of individual student performance to highlight strengths and areas to work on. It’s a diagnostic tool to help staff to plan and program activities for students. Some of our students will be representing the school at regional music events. Riley Longworth, Logan Hewitt, Lauren Brown, Don Watkins and Lakeiya Dennis were invited join Moorambilla’s annual program. This is a rare and valuable opportunity for the students to connect with artists of the highest calibre – composers, musicians, choreographers and visual artists to co-create outstanding works for performance that celebrate the rich culture of this region. Layten Smith, Lauren Brown and Ben Wheeler are congratulated on their successful pathway through a rigorous audition process to be part of CAPERS. In addition, Matthew Nash and James Madden will be performing in the Show Band. I am so proud of our students and when I get positive news I like to share it with the whole community. Below is an excerpt from a letter that was sent to discuss the wonderful way our swimming students represented us: The Narrabri team at the CHS swimming championships this week has been a credit to themselves and the school. with the work of Mr Hyland, who has a great rapport with the students. I also welcome Chris who has joined Steve with the Clontarf project. The Cooler classrooms project is a statewide government initiative. I don't need to tell you about how hot our spring and summer seasons are, and it was not a surprise that we automatically qualified for an air conditioning upgrade. In recent weeks we have received more information about the scope of the project. Any existing evaporative air conditioners will be replaced with split systems, and the old, non flued gas heaters will be removed. So the temperature of learning spaces should be better regulated to aid in learning. I will inform you of future developments. We have just had new roofs for the Industrial Technology block, Computer rooms and the Canteen/Girls toilets area. The Department of Education is spending quite a lot of money on maintenance. I would also like to share two positive stories about our students representing the school in the community. Many of the school students, dressed in full uniform, took part in the ANZAC march with a group of teachers. I have received much praise for their effort, especially the small group of students who spent the majority of the ceremony providing water for the community. All students will receive recognition in our school wellbeing system. Many of you went to the show and will have noticed the work of some of our students, particularly in the area of Art and Agriculture. Many received ribbons and prizes, but it is all about having pride in yourself, your school and your town. I would also thank the staff for their support of these students. I am asking for your co-operation with helping us to get the message across to students that violence is an unacceptable way to resolve a dispute. There were too many examples in Term one of students listening to rumours, seeing social media posts and being encouraged to assault someone. On several occasions innocent bystanders, including staff members, had their safety put in danger by irrational students. I encourage parents to regularly discuss issues with your children and to offer constructive advice. Please let the school know if there is a potential issue, with your child's Year Advisor or the Head Teacher Wellbeing, being the first port of call. The supervision of social media and device time is one way that parents can assist. We have consistently dealt with violence, with a suspension and a resolution meeting the usual initial outcome. Invariably, when the dust has settled, there are always strategies that could have been used to mitigate the risk. The weather is getting colder, but compared to this time last year, many more of our students are in school

uniform. I encourage you to continue to support this, and to seek assistance if it is required. Both Year 12 and year 11 have recently had examinations which leads us into the reports period. The best advice that I can give is to forge a strong bond with your child's teachers, as this will result in growth and development and minimise conflict and misunderstandings. I highly recommend you read the article in this newsletter on Keltan Williams. He is an outstanding student, sportsman and person. Keltan is so humble, and whilst we see his achievements as being extraordinary, he just thinks that it is normal. There is one area that he could improve upon…his selection of his rugby league team…..the Bulldogs. I would highly recommend a feathered team who get up early in the morning!

Winter Uniform With the cooler weather starting, school winter uniform is encouraged to be worn. This means, plain navy jumpers only. On Wednesday, students are allowed to wear plain navy school representative jumpers. Please remember appropriate black leather/suede shoes are compulsory. If your child is out of uniform please provide a note of explanation. Financial support is available for purchasing the uniform, any questions please contact the school on 6792 1180.

Bronze medal for Keltan Williams

Keltan Williams, Year 10 student, was selected for his third year in a row to represent NSW Juniors Wheelchair Basketball Team to attend the National Championships and battle it out against the best from other states which included WA, Qld, SA and Vic. Keltan met up with the team

and travelled to Townsville where competition started Wednesday 17th April. Winning 2 from 5 games over the next couple of days. NSW was the only team to lose to WA by a single digit, who went through undefeated to win gold. NSW came through the finals to battle it out for Bronze against Vic, who defeated NSW during the round games, but Keltan and his fellow NSW team mates pushed hard and came back in the last 2 minutes down to level the full time score at 65 all. The game then went into overtime and at the end of overtime was locked at 75

all, which then pushed the game into double overtime. NSW went back out and dominated keeping Vic scoreless and NSW winning 82-75 in what Keltan said was a tough stressful game and best game he has been involved in. Keltan has also been selected

to play for the NSW Blue Hornets to contest for the NWBL (National Wheelchair Basketball League) title in the men’s league which kicks off this weekend with first round being in Brisbane with games Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Earlier in the year Keltan also attended a week long training camp with the Australian U23 team squad which then competed in the Suncoast Spinners tournament at Caloundra QLD and will be attending their next training camp and then compete in the Slam Downunder tournament which is held later in the year.

Increasing Self Esteem

Building Resilience

Gaining More Self Confidence

Bush to Beach

On Wednesday 13th March Year 7 left for the 'Bush to Beach' Camp in Port Stephens. The bus trip down set the tone for the awesome time

the students would have. It was full of singing, music, movies and even Mr Berghan playing his ukulele. We arrived around lunchtime introducing the students to a life of camping for the next few days. That afternoon began with our engagement in exciting and challenging activities which we would rotate around for the next few days, such as rock climbing, the giant swing, kayaking, high ropes and the mud run. The students challenged themselves and gained some new skills and friends. On the Thursday morning we participated in a trip to Jimmy's Beach. Mr Druzinec led the charge in digging gigantic holes that could fit up to five students. Some students entertained themselves making hermit crab farms, whilst others splashed around in the water playing games. Later that night we played commando where the teachers held four prisoners and the students had to stomp around in the dark and try to find them, without being spotlighted. I think we teachers enjoyed this game tremendously as we thoroughly enjoyed spotlighting the students making it difficult for them to release our prisoners. A little

payback for the lack of sleep we received on the first night, when the students were so excited. Over the days I watched students grow,

conquer fears, develop new skills, and create new friendships. It was a great experience I feel the students really enjoyed, except for the slugs in the tent, which a few girls had to learn how to remove. I am now reminded of this every time the camp is mentioned.

Student Quotes About Camp: Jacob – “The Giant swing was the best, it was so high” Amelia – “I sang so much on the bus, I lost my voice” Fletcher – “The high ropes and rock climbing was best” Mack – “they had the most amazing things to do”

Moorambilla Voices Workshop

On Monday 18th March Mr Bailey had the pleasure of taking 8 talented Year 9 Music students to Coonabarabran to participate in the Moorambilla Voices Skills Development Workshop. Moorambilla Voices is a program that encompasses one third of NSW in the North Western region. Its purpose is to allow students in this region an equal opportunity to perform in large ensembles and with professional musicians as those in the city areas. The program is co-ordinated by Michelle Leonard OAM, who conducted the workshop in Coonabarabran. The students participated in rhythmic percussion, dance and vocal activities. Michelle was very impressed by the talent and friendliness of the Narrabri High School students. Participation at these workshops doubles as an audition to enter the MAXED Out Ensemble. This ensemble involves camps throughout the year to learn new Australian repertoire to then perform in a large production in Dubbo as well as opportunities to perform with other ensembles at other events throughout the year. Mr Bailey believed this to be a very worthwhile experience for our students and is looking forward to finding out if any of our students were selected for the MAXED Out ensemble. The school would like to thank Michael Hewett for helping to transport students to this workshop.

CHS Swimming In the last week of term. 12 Narrabri High School Swimmers competed at the NSW CHS Swimming Championships at SOPAC in Sydney. Jorja Bakhuis, Jonathon Charles, Andrew Coleman, Lucy Gordon, Clare Jensen, Alexander Mison, Charlotte Penberthy, Claudia Penberthy, Rosie Ross, Daniel Smith, Cassidy Staines and Ella Tomlinson formed the team and many PBs were swum – some swimmers taking off more than 10 seconds.

Highlights included the team dinner at the Italian restaurant! Rosie Ross making the final of the girls 13 years 100 backstroke and qualifying for the

NSW All Schools Championships. The 14 years girls relay team of Clare Jensen, Claudia Penberthy, Rosie Ross and Ella Tomlinson reached the finals of the freestyle relays and qualifying for the NSW All Schools Championships for the 12-14 years medley relays, also Charlotte Penberthy smashed the 30 second barrier for the 50 freestyle for the first time! Opens Girls & Boys Soccer

The NHS Open Girls soccer team beat Moree in a friendly match 5-3 after Moree was forced to forfeit. Goals were scored by Aimee Fladrick, Alexandra Bennett, Grace Hardy and 2 goals by Maddie Russell. The girls kept the opposition scoreless until the 2nd half. Everyone had a great time with a huge effort put in by the Ford sisters Elsie and Holly controlling the game with their relentless attitudes. The NHS Open Boys soccer team beat Moree in overtime 4-3, This secured their place in round three of the North West Schools knockout to play against Coonabarabran. The boys scored early in the first half filling them with confidence and excitement. This feeling didn't last long as Moree soon struck back bringing the game to a tie. The score went back and forth all game with the final score being 3-3. The boys were forced into overtime for golden point. First goal wins and Narrabri didn't have to wait long to taste victory. Colby Williams secured the win with a fantastic, maybe offside, goal 3 minutes into overtime. Colby played a huge game being one of only 3 boys who played the full 60 plus minutes. Colby scored all 4 goals on the day making him MVP. Huge congratulations to the boys for their team work and resilience on the field and following Mr. Pursche's game plan even through the noise of some eager fans on the sideline.

Students can apply for all ANU Bachelor programs directly to the university. One form covers everything students need to apply for a degree, accommodation and scholarships - there's no need to worry about multiple applications or deadlines. And even better: applications are free! Just go to https://www.apply-asa.anu.edu.au/anu/ HIA Industry Event

On May 28 we will be conducting an excursion to Tamworth for ten lucky Year 10-12 students who are interested in the

building trades. The program includes practical information and interaction with industry professionals who can tell students all they need to know about being an apprentice, how to get an apprenticeship, what to do to become “apprenticeship ready” and the different career paths that can be taken in the housing industry. Travel will be by car with school staff. We will leave the school at 7:30 am and return by 4:30 pm. Estimated cost: $12. Students need to sign up on the list outside the Careers office if they wish to be considered for this event.

Open Girls Softball Softball Gala day was held at Narrabri High on 8th May 2019 to determine the Open Girls North West Champions.

Narrabri played Coonabarabran with Coonabarabran winning 15 – 8. Narrabri started off slowly and allowed

Coonabarabran to score 9 runners home. While Narrabri could only manage 1. The 2nd innings saw Coonabarabran score another 4 runners home. Narrabri girls Elsie Ford, Cilla Hamblin & Amelie Johnson put bat to ball which resulted in Narrabri scoring 5 runners across the plate. In the fourth & fifth innings Coonabarabran was restricted to two runs and Narrabri scored three. Elsie Ford was brought on as Pitcher in the 4th innings & she recorded her first K2.

In the other game Peel defeated Tamworth High. This meant that they would played Coonabarabran in the final and Narrabri would play Tamworth High for 3rd place.

Narrabri started off well against Tamworth High and with Amelie Johnson, Claudia Penberthy, Alex Hall, Elsie Ford & Maddie Russell all crossing home plate. Tamworth scored 3 runners home.

The 2nd innings saw Tamworth go 3 up, 3 down after Elsie Ford threw to 1st base Alex Hall to make the first two outs, then 2nd base Claudia threw the runner out at 1st base.

In the 3rd Narrabri scored 2 runners home and then shut Tamworth out with another 3 up, 3 down. A great double play started by Claudia catching the fly ball and then throwing to Alex at Ist to make the second out. Then it was again Pitcher/1st base combination to put Tamworth back on the field.

Narrabri finished their 4th inning but the score reverted back as Tamworth had not completed their inning. Narrabri won 10 – 3.

Narrabri Open team members were:- Amelie Johnson, Claudia Penberthy, Alex Hall, Elsie Ford, Maddie Russell, Zara Foley, Charlotte Penberthy, Aimee Fladrick, Cilla Hamblin, Alex Bennett, Caitlyn Ford & Phoebe Edler.

In the final, Peel won 23 – 6 against Coonabarabran. Coonabarabran had a bad start which saw Peel receive 12 base on balls in the Ist innings. Coonabarabran started their comeback too late in the game, which saw them getting bat to ball against the very fast Peel pitcher. Peel will now represent North West at the CHS State carnival in June.

Special thankyou to Dale Nixon and John Fenton for giving up their time to umpire the games. Also a big thankyou to General Assistant, Steve Duncan for having the oval in such great condition. The three visiting teams commented that they were all very envious of our oval.

Art Space

Year 7 students have learnt that creating artworks are inspired through personal experiences as well as emotions. To demonstrate this Year 7 students created a silhouette filled with images of their interests. They found images that best represent themselves and their interests then sketched those images into the silhouette. Completing this task by using coloured pencils and watercolours. Many have developed skills in drawing and shown a good sense in creating a colourful representation of themselves.

Year 8 students have done an excellent job in their Archibald Recreation Task. Students did some research into the Archibald Prize to gain a better understanding of the prestigious Australian art portrait prize. They have a selection of artworks to choose from the many decades that the prize has been running. Year 8 selected material such as acrylic paint, oil pastels, chalk pastels and watercolour paint to recreate their chosen portrait to the best of their ability. Many students have shown a good eye for detail in their recreation task. Year 9 and 10 students spent most of term one looking at the different Elements of Art such as colour, shape and pattern. They learnt how masters of the Modern Art Movement created artworks through these elements with a focus on Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. They have demonstrated their knowledge of

these elements through the completion of their assessment task. They utilised repetition of linework and shape to create patterns. Many applied themselves diligently throughout the task to complete resolved works.

Year 11 worked consistently during the term on a body of work relating to the theme ‘Experiences’. Many focused on childhood experiences, and the body of work experience gave the students a small glance into what is expected in the HSC. This term we are looking at ‘Explorations and Experimentations’, where students have started to ‘branch’ out of their comfort zones, utilising unusual materials for artmaking, such as sticks, leaves and bark.

Non-Attendance Interview Program in Schools (NIPS)

On Thursday 30th May 2019, Narrabri High School will be involved in an attendance initiative known as NIPS. The program will be run by a team of Home School Liaison Officers, an Aboriginal School Liaison Officer and school staff. The objective of NIPS is to reduce the number of unjustified absences by talking with students concerned and to raise awareness at school and home of the importance of regular attendance. Students with attendance issues will be individually interviewed by this team to discuss any barriers to regular attendance. It will provide an opportunity for students to highlight any problems with their attendance (e.g. relationships, bullying, curriculum or health problems) and the school will then have an opportunity to address these issues. If your child is interviewed, you will receive a letter outlining the process which was followed, including your child’s attendance information. If you have any queries about NIPS, please contact Mr Stephen Bailey on 6792 1633.

North West Opens Touch Trials

Congratulations to the Narrabri High School students who travelled to Inverell on Monday 13th May to try out for the Opens North West Boys and Girls Touch teams. It was a great day had by the students with some very exciting and skilful touch being played. Bill Turner Trophy

Narrabri High School's Under 15's Bill Turner Trophy soccer team recently progressed to the third round of the prestigious nationwide school girls competition with a hard fought 3 - 1 win over Calrossy Anglican High School in Tamworth. After defeating Moree school St Philomena's 11 - 0 in round one, the girls knew that this encounter would be a far more intense affair, yet they were certainly up to the occasion. First half goals to Grace Hardy and Tashanny Clarke saw Narrabri go into the break with a deserved 2 - 0 lead. The second half saw a rejuvenated Calrossy side come out all guns blazing, yet Narrabri, led by goalkeeper Andrea Brown, Captain Lauren Brown and central defender Lily Kelly, repelled wave after wave of attack. A goal to Calrossy ensured a tense final ten minutes; however, Grace Hardy's second goal three minutes from time ensured that there would be no comeback. Congratulations to all sixteen girls who comprised Narrabri's squad. Every player contributed to this deserved victory. The girls travel back to Tamworth for round three for an encounter against either Oxley High School or Carinya Christian College.

Positive Recognition Points (Community)

What is the ‘Positive Recognition Points’ system? Student success is measured by the issuing of student recognition points. Teachers award students a Gold, Silver, Bronze or No Award based on their ability to carry out the ethos of RISE: Respect, Involvement, Success and Engagement. Based on the teacher’s awards students will be acknowledged with certificates relevant to their level of achievement. Students who, during the course of the year, have been suspended or have had questionable behaviour or attendance MAY have their level of achievement adjusted at the discretion of the Executive team. How does it work? Every 5 weeks each teacher nominates at which level a student is performing in class into Millennium (the School Admin system) based on the following matrix:

A teacher is to enter data into Millennium for each student in each of their classes (including Roll Group and Sport). The data is collated at the beginning of terms 2 and 3 to assess each student’s progress. This information is then sent to parents/carers to inform them of their child’s progress in these areas. These letters will give a breakdown of how each student is progressing in each of their classes as well as an overall achievement level up to that point in the year. At the end of the year all the data is collated to determine what level of achievement each student has attained based on their efforts during the year. The calculation of each level is guided by the following:

The total points for each individual student are added together and divided by the number of entries, hence, finding the average. Each students score is then compared to the following table to determine their level of achievement:

Greater than 2.5 Gold Award

Greater than 1.5, up to and including 2.5

Silver Award

Greater than 0.5, up to and including 1.5

Bronze Award

Equal to or less than 0.5 No Award

Students who achieve Gold level will be given the opportunity to participate in Gold Day, a celebration for these students’ consistent efforts throughout the year. Teachers will also make entries for students who participate in extra-curricular and school representative activities. These entries will contribute towards the achievement of a Narrabri High School Medal. To achieve this, students must reach Gold Level and have participated in a range of different extracurricular and school representative activities (In 3 different fields, or in 2 different fields but a large number of nominations in one of those fields).
