A debate on “Later Life

Ambitions” was facilitated by John

Stapleton and after three excellent

presentations in the morning, was

followed by further debate in the

afternoon. In short a booklet called

‘Later Life Ambitions’ has been

produced and it brings together the

collective voices of over a quarter of a

million pensioners through NARPO,

the NFOP (National Federation of

Occupation Pensioners) and the CPA

(Civil Service Pensioners Alliance).

It lays out their vision from fair

Hi Everybody. In September the

NARPO Annual Conference was held

in Brighton with over 300 members

from branches across the country. The

theme was “Later Life Ambitions”. On

paper it seemed that the Conference

would prove to be bland but in reality

this was not the case.

It opened with the NEC being

accused of failing to follow their own

succession planning; no doubt a

reference to the new President not

being the former Vice President. This

was immediately followed by an

accusation that the NEC lacked

transparency; this referred to

discussions taking place about who

qualified as delegates which had not

been communicated to Branches. The

CEO, Clint Elliott, defended the

allegation and stated that NEC did feed

back to Regional Branch Meetings.

He confirmed that a total revision of the

Rules was taking place to make them

more relevant to the organisation today.

Legal advice was being provided and a

draft set would be available by the start

of 2015 and they would then be

circulated to Branches for feedback. A

full debate would then take place at the

next conference. The outcome of

these allegations raised the temperature

of Conference and certainly put the

timetable in disarray. The new

President managed to keep everything

under control and ultimately ensured

that by the end of the day the timetable

was fully covered and opportunities

provided to follow up on the morning’s

issues.

Sir Hugh Orde, OBE, QPM,

President of ACPO, summarised

policing today and the issues for the

future. This was followed by a

presentation from David Wilbraham,

lead chaplain for Thames Valley Police

and National Police Chaplain for

NACP. His presentation was very

relevant, amusing and one that certainly

helped to relieve tensions. Some of

you may remember David as he served

in Merseyside some years ago. For

further information follow the link to

bus services to promote independence.

All pensioners are urged to pledge their

support and help to change the terms

of the political debate. See ‘Later Life

Ambitions’ on the NARPO web site -

http://www.narpo.org Look at the

content and consider pledging your

support.

We only had two motions to

discuss. One related to an NEC

proposal to offer free accidental death

insurance to every member. NARPO

funds are now very good and this was

thought to be a way of reinvesting them

in the membership. It was rejected by a

significant number. The second related

to a clarification of the wording on the

application forms. In view of the rule

review this was remitted for further

discussion. Full details of conference

will be available in the next Narpo

News or on the main Narpo web site.

In the end a very good conference.

Please remember it is your Branch

and we really do welcome suggestions

as to how we may be able to improve

our services. Feel free to let us know.

Please be careful over the coming

winter months. Wishing you a very

pleasant Christmas and a happy and

healthy New Year.

Police Pensioner Obituaries

F or the past 25 years I have kept a

record of pensioner obituaries.

These records have been taken from

NARPO Bulletins and have been purely

for my use and a few close colleagues

to remember those who we had the

privilege of serving with. My

original database was in an Access file

which some people had trouble in

opening. I have now changed the

format into an Excel file which is easy

to open and keep up to date.

The database contains, names, ages,

ranks and where possible where they

last served, dates of retirements and

deaths.

I will gladly send the information to

other NARPO members who request it

via email. It will then be possible for

other members to keep the list up to

date.

On a lighter note for those who like

easy listening songs, I have published

160 videos on YouTube under the name

'briddoful' which some may find

entertaining.

THE MERSEYSIDE NARPO EMAIL MESSAGING LIST

T he Email Messaging List enables you to receive email messages from the

Branch Secretary. Your email address will be on this list if you supplied the

Branch Secretary with your email address when you first joined, or subsequently,

and, if you have changed your email address, you have informed the Branch

Secretary of your new address.

The content of these messages vary but can relate to requests for information

about a police related topic, notification of employment opportunities, funerals of

members, updates on NARPO matters and other relevant information.

I am not receiving email circulations

If you have notified the Branch Secretary of your email address but you are not

receiving regular emails it is possible that:

You supplied an incorrect email address.

You did not notify the Secretary when you changed your email address.

The email has ended up in the spam folder (to minimise the risk of this

please ensure you add [email protected] to your

address book and safe senders list).

Your inbox is full and you have exceeded your email hosts maximum limit.

What do I have to do?

Nothing if you wish to remain on the list. On joining the Branch you will have

normally supplied an email address and this one will be used. If you have not

supplied an email address or wish to use a different one for your emails then

simply send an email to the Branch Secretary - secretary@narpo-

merseyside.org.uk Some members prefer to use a different email address to their

personal one. It is your preference.

I don’t want to remain on the Email Messaging List

There is, of course, no necessity for you to remain on the list if you do not wish to

do so. You are free to unsubscribe at any time. At the bottom of every email

circulation you are able to unsubscribe by pressing the unsubscribe link or you can

contact the Branch Secretary on [email protected]

direct. However, by unsubscribing, you may miss out on all the up to date

information.

I don’t want former colleagues contacting me

Your details are not supplied to anyone; no personal information is supplied to any

individual without your permission.

The Merseyside NARPO Message Board

The Merseyside NARPO Members Message Board - http://merseysidenarpo.com

- is not linked to the Email Messaging List and if you change your email address

on the Message Board this will not alter your email address on the Messaging

List. Contact the Secretary - [email protected] with your

preferred email address.

Finally

We do hope that you will continue to remain on the Branch email messaging list

and that you will find it of value. We are always looking at ways of improving all

our services to our members so please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any

feedback, good or otherwise, and ideas for improvement.

Secretary

The NARPO Villas With regard to the letter from Alan

Bonner. Alan Bonner was a cadet

under (as he puts it) ‘the tutelage of

gentlemen like the late Bill Nicholson

31’A’. His widow, Rita Nicholson (my

Mum) was thrilled to read comments

about her much loved Bill, and asked

for her comments to be passed to

NARPO Bulletin.

Rita is still entertaining all her

family and cooking our Sunday dinner

each week. She is now a great

grandmother to five lovely children, an

ever growing family! Pity Bill

Nicholson, our dad, isn’t here to share

all the thrills, however, we had some

fabulous times whilst he was alive and

he was just ‘the best dad and granddad’

ever.

Glad you had a nice holiday Alan

and the Villa sounds just wonderful.

Linda Lovelady

(Bill Nicholson`s daughter)

Thank You

M y London to Paris challenge in memory of Susan has currently raised over

£3,000 in donations for Macmillan Cancer Support. Thank you so much for

all your support and for my fellow NARPO members’ contributions. As members

of Merseyside Police for a collective period of 57 years and then both members of

NARPO, Sue and I know the generosity of the Merseyside Police family and I was

not surprised by the contributions I received through your help. Best wishes.

‘D’ DIVISION (LIVERPOOL CITY)

O n Friday 3 October 2014, thirty five members of ‘D’

Division who served at Rose Hill Bridewell met at

Riversdale Police Club for their Annual Reunion.

Once again Karen produced an exceptional buffet which was

thoroughly enjoyed by all. Tommy Hogg, at 98 years of age,

accompanied by his minder, ex Con 177‘D’ Geordie Harper

attended and ex Con 242‘D’ Evans (Sir John Evans, QPM)

travelled up from Devon to share a couple of hours with his

former colleagues. Last year ex Con 110‘D’ Roberts came

over from Spain for the reunion which proves there was

something quite special about working from Rose Hill

Bridewell. Next year, the Reunion will be held on Friday 2

October.

‘GUNK SNIFFERS’ GET TOGETHER

P eter Green, Malcolm Edge and I would like to thank all

those who attended the ‘Gunk Sniffers’

gathering. What a fantastic afternoon. We are grateful to

all of you for being such a big part of our lives, and making

us laugh at your antics. How some of you stayed upright

we will never know! When it’s a pleasure to go to work,

then work becomes a pleasure. The final part of the

afternoon was the appearance of a real can of ‘Gunk’, and

when ‘Lippy’ Taylor put a dab behind each ear, there was a

rush to kiss him. He was taking some home to put on his

pillow. According to James it took two days for the smell

to clear from the Club - sheer heaven.

LIVERPOOL CITY POLICE CADETS’ REUNION The 35th Reunion Dinner was held at the Yacht Club,

Coburg Dock, on Thursday 9 October, 2014. Yet again the

event was a triumph of comradeship, nostalgia and humour,

and thought is already being given to the 36th Reunion

which will be held in October 2015. Unfortunately, the

usual guest of honour, former Drill Sergeant, John Edwards,

was unable to attend this year.
