PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Walawaani Njindiwan and welcome to the middle of Term 4.

It has been an exciting term so far with many wonderful opportunities for our students to enjoy. One highlight was being able to share time at Umbarra with some of our wonderful girls involved in the Digital Storytelling Project. They filmed Bermagui Primary School Students in Years 3 and 4 singing ‘Head Shoulders Knees and Toes’ in the Dhurga language. We are so lucky to have such rich cultural heritage in a beautiful place at our backdoor.

Congratulations to those students who have attended excursions this term. I am so proud of your dedication and behaviour in representing our school.

Again, we get to celebrate the successes of our elite athletes. In the Zone Surfing Championships, Rugby 9’s Berry Horse Championships, Mini Olympics and of course our fabulous RoboRebels representing the school not only in competitions but in our community.

This week we welcomed some Year 6 students on their half day transition visit from our feeder primary schools. They told me they loved catching up with old friends, the canteen and recess. They also experienced mini classes in English, History, Geography, Library, Maths, PDHPE, Japanese and debating, but of course they can’t wait to come back for a full day and experience. Then they can also try some TAS subjects. As a former TAS teacher, of course I am not bias at all towards TAS. We too are exciting for them to start their high school adventure next year.

With the excitement of end of year excursions coming up, I ask that all students, to avoid missing out, adhere to school rules and hand all tasks in in time. Please return excursion notes on time to avoid disappointment. We cannot change due dates.

Lastly, I wish to congratulate the outgoing Year 12 students as they have finished their final examinations and we will celebrate at their formal Thursday evening.

Week 7 - Minimum Standards Testing Window Narooma High School will be conducting minimum standard testing in Week 7, Term 4 2019. These tests will affect some current Year 11 and Year 10 students. Those students that are required to sit these tests have been informed and have received organisational information on when they will attempt the tests. The on-line tests will be held during periods 1 & 2 on Tuesday 26

November through to Thursday 28 November. The tests

allow our students to demonstrate they meet the HSC minimum standard, which is a requirement for the awarding of the Higher School Certificate from 2020. There are three tests the students must pass to achieve the HSC minimum standard – reading, writing and numeracy. Students have two opportunities a year to meet the standard in each of these areas, from Year 10 until a few years after Year 12. We will also be offering students the opportunity to enrol in practice tests so they can get used to the online test format and be exposed to the testing platform. Students must be enrolled through the NESA website to access the practice tests. Please contact Mrs Lyn Macauley for information regarding Minimum Standards Testing or enrolment in practice tests. Further information can be obtained from; Go to the NESA website to:

SUPPORT

On Wednesday 23 October the Support Faculty took a group of students to Wollongong for the ‘Mini Olympics”.

The first day we experienced the Illawarra Tree top walk which was a little scary but beautiful. We stayed overnight, ate

pizza for dinner and played championship Uno!

The following morning we attended walked from lighthouse to lighthouse at Wollongong Harbour, then it was off to Beaton Park to compete. We competed in all track and field events bringing home gold, silver and bronze medals and even made

an appearance on WIN news!

I ran in a running race. I liked it! By

Everyone tried their hardest.

Unfortunately I didn’t win a

medal but I had a great time!

We had a BBQ for lunch with

heaps of sausages. It was a

sizzling hot day!

MATHEMATICS

Year 7 students have been studying measurement this term and recently completed a garden design as their

major project for this unit of work. Students had to plan the layout of the garden and then calculate the perimeter

and area of their design. They then had to submit a second design with a greater area of garden beds and a

lower perimeter in order to show that they had attempted to optimise their use of materials and available space.

This project was one of the focuses when Costa Georgiadis of ABC’s Gardening Australia came to the school on

Wednesday 6 November. Costa talked through the various designs with year 7 students and then assisted in

preparing and planting the first of the garden beds. The garden will be built around a Koori Yarning Circle that

now sits in the heart of the school.

Year 7 will continue to work on finishing off the garden beds over the next few weeks. A big thank you to all the

teachers and staff who made the day possible and the photography students who captured all the action on the

day. We look forward to presenting a short video about the project later in the term.

ENGLISH AND HISTORY

On Friday 1 November, Sienna Rowe, Harrison McKee, Jack Lenihan and Ella Marshall met at school as the

sun came up, nerves tingling and brains buzzing with excitement. They travelled to Bulli High School to compete

in the state quarter-finals for debating. They knew that they were up against some strong competition yet

showed enthusiasm and positivity. They only had one hour to prepare a case on the topic "that the media should

refrain from reporting on the private lives of politicians." They handed this difficult topic amazingly and showed

impressive growth as a team. The Bulli High team was just too experienced yet we will be back even better next

year!

SOCIETY AND CULTURE TRIP TO SYDNEY

Society and Culture is a dynamic subject that involves examining how different communities and people

interact. A vital aspect of our lives includes entertainment, cities and government. With this in mind our senior

students set off to Sydney to explore these three aspects of our lives.

On arrival, after dealing with extreme city traffic, we were ready to tackle an escape room adventure. Two

teams were formed with the goal of making it through many set trials in an hour with the added goal of beating

the other team’s time for bragging rights. Both teams were successful with the Avatar quest gaining the tittle

above the Indiana Jones experience.

Once we found our extravagant hotel rooms (we wish) it was time for dinner and a night on the town. Chinatown

was the perfect place for cultural dining before exploring the city lights. Darling Harbour, wharfs, ice cream,

frozen yoghurt, Hyde Park and a range of city slickers was all that was needed to provide a fun filled adventure.

The next morning provided the opportunity to embrace our third objective. Politics fill much of the media’s time

as it relentlessly pursues its role of exposing every aspect of their policies and lives. Meeting with Mr Mark

Latham, a NSW Senator representing the One Nation Party was a unique experience to gain an insight into a

very high profile politician who has definitely captured a lot of media attention over the years. While we might

not all agree with some of his political ideologies, our time with Mr Latham was an eye opener. We were

introduced to a man who talked about his family, how closely he works with politicians of all parties and why he

feels so strongly about the importance that democracy plays as the centrepiece of Australia’s way of life.

Before our adventure came to an end, Mr Andrew Constance heard that we were in the building and offered to

give us a tour of both the houses of parliament. Mr Constance is our State Member for Bega the Minister for

Transport and Roads and is also Leader of the House. We were able to ask further questions and really

enjoyed the opportunity to sit with him in the seats where all the issues that change our lives are discussed. The

main law being debated at the time of our visit was the newly introduced abortion legislation.

Our trip to Sydney had now drawn to an end. A lavish lunch in Centre Point Tower was a great conclusion to an exciting road trip. One more battle with pollution and intense traffic was made before the beautiful shores of Narooma were in our sights. With some serious snoozing on the bus (not including the driver) it seemed like some us had just clicked our heels and were now telling our parents all about an action packed two days.

ZONE SURFING COMPETITION - MIDDLE BEACH

Small, clean waves greeted the Narooma High School surfing team on Friday October 25. Matt Driscoll, Brandon Feledyk, Phillip Davies, Thomas Hodge and Joe Driscoll all surfed extremely well and took out the Open Boys Shield. Brandon scored the highest scoring wave, and the day ended with free surfing, with a whale joining them.

WHAT’S NEW IN ROBOTICS AT NAROOMA HIGH?

Well, the juniors competed in the Robocup Robotics competition in Melbourne at the showgrounds in the

October holidays. We travelled via bus with 4 other Canberra schools to the national competition competing in

the Lego soccer competition. Our team, “The super amazing and legendary soccer players” placed in the

middle of their table competition. Competing strongly and learning so much form their peers over the weekend.

What an amazing experience.

Last weekend in Narooma both the Junior and Senior Roborebels presented their robots to the community at

the Rotary Renewable Energy Expo. The students demonstrated both the large robot form this year’s FIRST

robotics competition. The junior team were able to practice their Lego missions for the upcoming Firsts Lego

league competition in a fortnight and survey the public regarding their projects on solar panels and upcycling pf

plastic for pothole repair. Thanks to Rotary for inviting and their sponsorship.

WE WANT YOUR LIDS A “Lids 4 kids” collection point. Now it’s even easier to join many organisations across Australia in turning plastic lids destined for landfill into prosthetic limbs for children. A reused A4 box is now sitting (Narooma High School) for people to drop off plastic bottle tops that more often than not, end up in landfill. Lids that are accepted are plastic bottle top lids from soft drink and milk/juice cartons/bottles. They are generally up the size of a credit card (or smaller) and too small to be recycled as a stand-alone hard plastic item in our kerbside collection. To drop off…They need to be clean and have the white waxy liner (if it has one) flicked out of it (this can be done easily with a pen or fingernail). When the box is full (with around 900 lids) it will be sent to Envision in Melbourne. They have a target of 2 million lids to meet! Once the lids get to Envision, they are colour sorted and made into pellets that are fed into a 3D printer that produces prosthetic limbs for children. It’s a great initiative with good social and environmental outcomes.
