  • PREFACE

Recently there has been substantial controversy over the UnitedStates military's role in the drug war. Under legislation passedin 1981, the Department of Defense now assists civilian lawenforcement agencies in their fight to combat illegal drug traf-ficking by lending military equipment and facilities, throughintelligence sharing, and by providing expert training and adviceto civilians. The use of military personnel is also contributingto the anti-drug effort and is probably the most sensitive areaof consideration. Clearly, some policymakers see the drug prob-lem as a threat to the economic, social, and national security ofour country and look to the military for assistance and coopera-tion. However, others think that providing military assistanceto civil authorities will interfere with the primary mission ofthe Department of Defense--military preparedness'.

To assist researchers in a better understanding of how the armedservices are involved in the drug war, the US Army War CollegeLibrary presents NARCOTICS INTERDICTION AND THE MILITARY: ASELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY. It includes notable publications thatwere added to the Library's collection since the first edition,. entitled THE MILITARY IN THE WAR ON DRUGS: A SELECTED BIBLIO-GRAPHY, was published in June 1988, as well as most of thecitations from that first edition. Like the original bibliogra-phy, this version lists books, documents, and periodical andnewspaper articles that provide various viewpoints from materialsreadily available in the US Army War College Library collection. For your convenience, we have added AWC Library call numbers atthe end of each book entry (keep in mind that call numbers varyfrom library to library).
