2015-2016 President- Marilyn Lewis
This is a Back to School Alert. With school starting this month and the school buses on the road, it takes your full attention. There are many bus stops on the road and some young drivers are out driving or riding with other students for the first time. After a long Summer, we are not used to this and the additional traffic. Please be careful and take your time. Also, this is “crunch” time for all members to roll up your sleeves in the next few days to finish the sponsorships for the 5K Run. We are so fortunate to have a great Pilot Club in our 56
th year. It has
weathered the tests of time. Stand tall and be proud of all we are accomplishing. We can Do More, Care More and Be More.
Making Dreams Come True 2015 Pilot International Convention Leadership Conference in Orlando
at the Swan Hotel in July from Naples
(R to L) President Marilyn Lewis, Sue
Lester and President Elect Joan Hurd.
Crafty
palm trees made from Cheerios with tiny
flip flops decorated the tables for the
President’s Transformational Luncheon.
Every Pilot could use another bag with
the Pilot International logo. At the
Florida District Meeting, the theme for
the Fall Council was announced as Pilot
Pardi Gras with Mardi Gras fun. It will
be November 6 – 8 at the Embassy
Suites in West Palm Beach.
Watch for more information on Fall
Council in August. Mark your calendar
and plant to attend.

The Pilot Club of Naples partners with the
National Alliance on Mental Illness
(NAMI)
What is H.U.G.S.? Health Under Guided Systems (H.U.G.S.) is
a free community based children's
behavioral health program funded by the
Naples Children & Education Foundation
that addresses the prevention and early
intervention of social, emotional, behavioral,
and mental health challenges for children
ages 3 months to 18 years.
The primary purpose of H.U.G.S. is to
provide a responsive, culturally competent
system of care for children and youth with
behavioral health needs. H.U.G.S. facilitates
collaboration across agencies, as well as
schools and childcare centers to improve
access to culturally and linguistically
competent services for families. We provide
coordinated, universal screenings, clinical
assessments, and system navigation to
facilitate early identification and access to
care to mitigate the effects of untreated
problems later in life.
The H.U.G.S. team assists families in
developing tools and understanding the
long-term care needs of children and
recovery planning, including integrated use
of community resources. In addition HUGS
offers the NAMI national signature program,
Ending the Silence, for children in the
Collier school system. This program
strengthens the work of the HUGS team by
helping to break down barriers and
establishes a natural feed to the children
adolescent support group.

– One in four families have children affected
by serious mental illness.
Thanks to a special program called
H.U.G.S., or Health Under Guided
Systems, thousands of families are now
getting the help they need. Kathyrn Hunter
is the executive director of the National
Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) in
Collier County. The H.U.G.S program
won national recognition this year for
being the most innovative in the country
for early intervention. NAMI works closely
with Collier County Public Schools. They
screened 1,500 kids for mental illness and
were able to help a third of them.
President Marilyn Lewis got a mystery
Pick Me Up at the July meeting. . . .
By the look on her fact, it was
a successful surprise Pick Me Up..
This proves that we don’t have to wait for
an organized Pick Me Up event. Anytime
you feel there is a need to let someone
know they are appreciated, is a good time.
Old saying: It’s the little things that count.
Definition: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is
caused by a blow or jolt to the head which
disrupts normal brain function or by a
foreign object penetrating the skull. Studies
have found that the four most common
causes of TBIs are falls, motor vehicle and traffic accidents, struck by/against events,
and assaults (Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention’s Traumatic Brain Injury in
the US: Emergency Dept Visits,
Hospitalizations and Deaths 2002-2006
webpage).
Magnitude of the Problem: The CDC
estimates that in the U.S. around 1.7 million
people sustain a TBI every year. TBI is a
contributing factor in almost one third of all
injury deaths. In addition: each year nearly
half a million (473,947) children between
the ages of 0 and 14 are treated in
emergency departments for TBI-related
injuries; TBIs are most commonly sustained
by children between the ages of 0 and 4,
adolescents between the ages of 15 and 19,
and adults age 65 and over; and TBI rates
are higher for boys than girls.
Providing training to coaches and officials
so that they can take steps to prevent sport-
related TBIs and can recognize TBIs and
respond appropriately when these injuries do
occur; and educating parents and young
athletes so that they understand the risks and
recognize the signs and symptoms of sport-
related TBIs.
We support Miracles Among Us, a support
group for those affected by TBI. Our Pilot
member, Suzan Berg is President of MAU.
