Trip SummaryThe entire fifth grade class at Isaac Singleton Elementary in Joliet, IL will be taking a field trip to the

Naper Settlement in Naperville, IL. The trip will include both the Bilingual class of 30 students and the Gen. Ed. Class of 30 students. The students will be accompanied by both fifth grade teachers and four additional volunteer parent chaperones. The itinerary for the day’s events are as follows:7:45 am Students enter the school and get ready to leave for the field trip

Students will follow normal daily morning procedures with the addition of preparing their lunches according to the informational sheet attached (see Information Sheet- #1).

The teacher will divide students into chaperone groups so the students know who they are to be with (see Information Sheet- #2)The teacher will remind the students of the expected behavior and that they are to act like

responsible young adults.Students, teachers and parent chaperones will begin to file onto the bus at approximately 8:15am.

8: 25am After a final count the bus will leave Singleton Elementary9: 05am The bus will arrive at Naper Settlement where we will be greeted by a member of the staff.9:30am The program will begin (program is explained in detail on a later page)11:10am Students will take a short break and head toward the designated lunch area.

Students will use this time to eat lunch and discuss what they have experienced.11:30am Students will finish up their lunch and return to finish the rest of the program.1:00pm Students will have completed the program and will gather to thank and debrief with the staff.1:10pm Students will have boarded the bus, counted off and be ready to return to the school.1:50 pm The bus will drop us back off at Singleton and we will be in the classroom by approximately 2:00pm. Once back that school the students will have about 30 minutes to debrief on what they experienced and enjoyed about the field trip. The teacher will explain and allow time for the students to begin work on the letter they are to write as part of the follow up (see follow up section).

Bag Lunch Preparation•Naper Settlement has a set procedure for schools that are bringing and having their lunch on site, and these preparations must be done before arriving on site. •Teacher must label all individual lunches and each classroom teacher should gather all lunches in a cardboard box or plastic bag and label with the teacher and school name. (Naper Settlement will no longer be able to provide bags for lunches not packed prior to arrival.)• Assign adults and students to carry lunches off bus to designated lunch storage area.•Each class may eat lunch when ready simply retrieve lunches from the lunch storage area when you are ready.

•If you arrive with lunches not packed as requested, each student will need to carry their lunch while visiting. Since food & drinks are not allowed in our buildings, lunch bags will be left outside while you tour buildings. Naper Settlement does not accept responsibility for lunches or their contents while they are unattended. •Backpacks - If your students are carrying their lunches with them in their backpacks, they will be asked to leave them outside while touring. Since packs are bulky, they can brush against irreplaceable artifacts in our buildings.

Student GroupsWhile visiting the site, classes must stay

together in one group, but students will be divided into groups of 10 each of which will have 1 adult chaperone. The purpose of these groups is to help maintain order and disciple by making 1 adult responsible for a small number of students instead of having to keep track of all 60 students.

Ms. Lopez’s class will be grouped together and be divided between the teacher and the two parent chaperones that volunteered. Ms. Ortiz’s class will be grouped together and will be divided between the teacher and the two parent volunteer chaperones.

Letter to ParentsDear Parent(s), 

On April 4th, 2012, our entire 5th grade class of our school will be going on a field trip to Naper Settlement to participate in the “Time Travel Trip.” The purpose of this field is to create a better understanding of daily life of common people during the Civil War era. Students will be able to step-in the life of common people and participate in hands-on activities, guided by educators in period clothing, to introduce concepts related to chores and common trades of the time period. . This program is a fascinating way to reinforce the unit we have been covering concerning the Civil War. This activity will take place outdoors, please make sure your student dresses appropriately for the weather. We require that every student bring a lunch as we will be having our lunch time at the site.

The program will last around 3 hours. We will be leaving the school premises at 8:25 a.m. Please note, students are still expected to arrive at the school at the normal arrival time. Our estimated time for our return at Singleton is approximately around 1:50 p.m.

The cost for each student is $13 per student. Bus transportation and the program’s fee is included. In order for a student to attend the field trip, it is mandatory that he/she have the permission slip completed by a

parent/guardian.The following items need to be turned in by February 29th, 2012, NO LATER:Permission slip$13 in cash onlyWe do need chaperones. As we are taking the entire 5 th grade class, we will need volunteers to assist in chaperone duty. If

Follow up Activities & Connection to Learning StandardsSocial Studies ConnectionThe program the students will be participating in will be closely

aligned with Illinois state learning standards for Social Studies. The program will cover Illinois Learning Standards: Goals 15, 16 and 18 and will serve to reinforce the unit we have been cover on the Civil War. The trip it’s self has its’ focus in social studies, but by using follow up assignments in L.A. and in science the trip will serve as an interdisciplinary activity.

The program will consist of the students walking through history as they meet villagers and experience the life of the common man during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The students will be able to follow the development of a typical Northern Illinois town as it grew from a small frontier outpost to an agricultural and industrial community. The students will also have the opportunity to see demonstrations of 19th century trades and crafts.

L. A. Connection•As part of the follow up activity, once students return to the classroom they will be given the assignment to write a letter as one of the town’s people they met at the field trip site.

•The students are to follow correct letter writing format they have learned and used before while writing a friendly letter.

•The students are to focus on representing their selected “character” with accuracy and using historical facts they have studied in class as well as any new/interesting information they gathered from the trip.

Science ConnectionTo incorporate science into this field trip the

students will send the following 2 days in science class exploring the natural resources the town’s people had at their disposal.

The students will learn and be able to explain how the availability of certain resources determined the trade the people had at the time.
