Jazz vocalist Nancy Reed was born in Brooklyn...

Her father, Marcus Wilbun was a jazz and classical pianist who played at the historic Minton's jam sessions in Harlem. Her mother, Lillie Wilbun, sang opera and taught Nancy to sing. Nancy’s first professional performance was at age 19. By age 22, she was performing full time - and has been working ever since.

During the last thirty years she has appeared in a wide variety of settings and venues. Artistically consistent and always the consummate professional, Nancy Reed has toured Japan with the Nancy Reed Jazz Show, appeared in Mexico's Cancun Jazz Festival with the Nancy and Spencer Reed Sextet, sang and played over thirty times at the COTA Jazz Festival in Delaware Water Gap and performed at countless private and club engagements in the eastern Pennsylvania area where she resides. She has worked with a remarkable array of musicians including David Liebman, Phil Woods, Joe Temperly, Houston Person, Gene Perla, Elliot Zigmund, the Howard Williams Orchestra, Wycliff Gordon and David Fathead Newman.

Nancy has recorded two albums with the Ellington Legacy band which feature Norman Simmons on piano and Duke’s grandson Edward Ellington II on guitar.

Her most adventurous project to date is her recording with world renown saxophonist David Liebman which includes pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Steve Gilmore and drummer Bill Goodwin. She has also recorded with pianist John Coates, at the Deer Head Inn in Delaware Water Gap, Pa.

Nancy also plays electric bass and has recorded eight albums with her husband, guitarist Spencer Reed, during their 35 years of musical collaboration, the latest of which is “Right Now”. Other credits include a ten city tour of Northern Italy with pianist David Leonhardt, with whom she has recorded five albums. Her experience as backup singer began recording with legendary pianist and composer Bob Dorough on his Pop Art album This Is A Recording and more recently for ABC/Disney’s School House Rock Earth DVD.

The Ellington Legacy Group8 piece ensemble led by Edward Ellington II,playing classic and modern arrangements of the Duke Ellington repertoire.

David Liebman - Nancy Reed“Neighbors” QuintetCo - led by internationally renown saxophonist, NEA Jazz Master David Liebman, Phil Markowitz, piano, Steve Gilmore, bass and Bill Goodwin, drums.

Nancy Reed and Spencer Reed

Nancy Reed Triowith virtuoso pianist Jim Ridl and bassist Steve Varner playing tunes from their recording “In Her Own Sweet Way”. The recording features special guest, vibraphonist Joe Locke.

Featuring arrangements by Norman Simmons who also plays piano on the groups two recordings. Live performances are enhanced with storytelling by Edward, Duke’s grandson, with tales, both poignant and true, of life on the road as a young man with the famed Duke Ellington Orchestra.

The trio can be heard often at the Deer Head Inn in Delaware Water Gap, and at Jazz At Kitano on Park Avenue in Manhattan.
