Important Working Meetings
May, 20nd 2010 – Meeting summarizing the “Opto…”
conference
We met to summarize the “OPTO Meeting for Young Researchers”
conference that has been held in Toruń ,May 12-15 th, 2010.
It was very successful event. The participants came from Romania,
Ukraine, Russia, Germany, France, India, China, France, Taiwan,
Pakistan and Poland. [conference is described in details in other report
section].
We’ve received lot of e-mails from conference participants- they
really enjoyed both scientific and social parts of the OPTO Meeting.
STUDENTS CHAPTER REPORT – May 2010 – May 2011
June, 14nd 2010 – Meeting summarizing the academic
year that just has ended
We summarized last academic year, that was filled with our
Chapter Activities [we didn’t even imagine how busy next year will be].
We said tanks to all chapter member for great job they did, for
their commitment and heart to make it all work. We said Goodbye
wishing all our members happy holidays time.
September, 28th 2010 – first draft meeting – national
contest for the toy for children with vision problems
Very important date for us.
First draft meeting concerning
national contest for the toy for
children with vision problems. We
discussed how to bring into live the
idea of our chapter member Danuta
Bukowska and Ewa Kwiatkowska.
STUDENTS CHAPTER REPORT – May 2010 – May 2011
Basic contest sketch was made. We assigned tasks to chapter members
involved.
October, 14nd 2010 – New academic year has started –
we vote for new chapter officers
Together with start of new
academic year a change on Chapter
President position was made. Old
President Danuta Bukowska was
replaced by new one Karol
Karnowski. Danuta did lot of great
work as a head of our Chapter. Karol
admitted that it would be hard to reach the level of presidency set by
Danuta and Ewa. However, the tradition is that the outgoing president
becomes a Vice-president – so Karol can count on Danuta help and
experience.
November, 17nd 2010 – “To be or not to be” for OPTO
Meeting 2011
Academic year 2010/11 has brought many activities to our Chapter
– just to mention Art of Vision contest, European Scientist Night,
Exhibition of Students Chapter, Festival of Art and Science. Since lot of
as have many scientific duties we discussed whatever to continue or not
our adventure with OPTO Meeting for Young Researchers. After long
debate – taking into account all advantages and disadvantages – we
decided to make an effort and organize the conference one more time.
The time was high to start thinking about Invited Lecturers, to
send an info about conference to SPIE Chapters, to start use all
reasonable endeavours to get conference funding.
March, 2nd 2011 – Voting for new Chapter President and

Events and Projects
May 2010 OPTO Meeting for Young Researchers
The student conference OPTO Meeting for Young of Researchers
had been held in Torun, May 12- 15, 2010. The goal of the meeting was
to exchange scientific experience by young researches and to help
students to make first steps towards their future careers under the
inappreciable patronage of invited to experts. The participants came
from Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Germany, France, India, China, France,
Taiwan, Pakistan and Poland.
STUDENTS CHAPTER REPORT – May 2010 – May 2011
According to the SPIE mission, the field we all meet in was optics
and photonics. This was what we are interested in and apply our skills
to. All represented subjects, though of great topical dispersion, do have
a distinct common denominator. We were convinced that our scientific
forum, supported by respectable patronage of the invited experts, was
fertile soil for new ideas and solutions to grow. We believe that Torun
with its scientific legacy and academic spirit was a very right place for
this to happen and unique atmosphere of student event resulted in us
getting into professional as well as friendly relations.

There was a time for science – there was a time form fun. Our
opening event Traditional Dance Floor becomes famous.
To make the meeting more
attractive we organized Hit the
target competition . Apart from
being an educational activity, Hit
the target also requires students to
use their all the practiced skills
from optics to complete the tasks.
STUDENTS CHAPTER REPORT – May 2010 – May 2011
During Official Banquet – there was no end of conversation and
dancing.
The last day of conference started with
workshop Making the most of presentation
given by Jean- Luc Doumont, PhD, SPIE invited
lecturer. Jean- Luc is a fantastic trainer who can
combine a top notch technical background with
acclaimed communication and teaching skills.
His workshop was incredible and perfect!
Next, we had a Skype connection with Dirk Fabian from SPIE. He
woke up especially for us at 3 am (there is a 7 hours difference between
STUDENTS CHAPTER REPORT – May 2010 – May 2011
Poland and Washington, US). Dirk gave a short talk about Networking
for Scientists. He encouraged young scientist to be a part of society as
SPIE or Optical Society of America, etc. What is more, there was also a
quiet interested talk which opened Student Chapters’ Activities session.
At the end we would like to give here many thanks to sponsors and
institutions whose support made the organization of the Meeting
possible: National Laboratory for Quantum Technology, Institute of

STUDENTS CHAPTER REPORT – May 2010 – May 2011
Visit in Strzelno in Michelson Museum – November, 6th
2010
It was rainy day when we pay a visit to Strzelno – small town in
Poland, where noble prize winner Albert Michelson was born. Everything
started with presentation given by high school physics teacher Tomasz
Kardas. He is passionated with Michelson life. Lot of anecdotes and
unknown fact from Michelson life was told. We learned that he was not
only the great scientist by also excellent musician and painter. We had a
chance to see a number of souvenirs related to Michelson - like a copy
of a laboratory notebook with his famous measurements of velocity of
light.
After 3 hour with Michelson we moved to Kruszwica to take a boat
trip around Goplo – lake well known from Polish legends.
STUDENTS CHAPTER REPORT – May 2010 – May 2011
Konin 31.01 – 12.02 2011
Once again we visited children from Konin are for improving and
broadening pupils' scientific knowledge. We were hosted by the Regional
Development Agency in Konin, which is a organization responsible for
improving knowledge.
The main idea of this meeting was to demonstrate the nature of the
scientific enterprise through the process of prediction, experimentation,
observation and explanation. The success key is to give pupils a chance
to do all activities themselves and discuss about problems and exchange
ideas on how to solve them.
Preparing the program we decided to use in the various activities
cheap and commonplace materials allow for the activities to be tried
again at home. Results of all activities could also be recorded on the
worksheet. After each experiment a brief discussion arriving at an
explanation of what happened ends the activity.
The program of one Demonstration Classes in Physics consisted of
two parts: one hour performance and two hours hands-on workshop.
Details of this event you can see below.

The glass and the eye – physicist is taking photos
Two of our members Szymon Tamborski and Karol Karnowski who
are photography enthusiasts prepared photography workshop. The
aim of this event is to encourage people to stop using AUTO mode
in their cameras. By a chance a physical basis of some
photography problem will be presented. Szymon and Karol
received lot of help from students from Physical Relfections on
Photography group [founded by Szymon and Karol]:

Adventure Tent
To get closer to Torun’s citizens a Big Adventure tent was put up.
Everyone get the opportunity to feel on own’s skin how physics
and chemistry can be fascinating. Our member were showing
experiments well known from Back2School program:
Can implosion
Non-newtonian fluid
Sack an egg into the battle
Art of Seeing
We hold a national contest to design optical tools supporting
education and development for partially sighted children. The
idea is to complete a cheap set of optical toys for visual stimulation and
teaching aids that can be used in preschools and schools. As a
preliminary step we have estimated demand for such kits, It turned out
that many preschools and schools for visually impaired children are
keenly interested in our project.
The competition is aimed at everyone from Poland, but above all
students and graduates of science, technology and design. Its objective
is to draw attention to problems faced by partially blind children, such as
the lack of simple and inexpensive devices to stimulate visual
concentration through the change of light intensity or colour. It is
important in the rehabilitation of partially blind children, as it teaches
them perceptiveness, concentration and visual and physical co-

ordination. We, too, had remained unaware of how difficult the lives of
such people may be and how much work and practice on their part is
essential for them to cope in society, until we visited the Jan Brzechwa
Kindergarten with the intention of demonstrating special experiments in
physics to the children. Deeply moved by this experience, we decided to
take advantage of the resourcefulness and skills of young people who
could put together an educational set of toys that would facilitate the
process of learning for partially blind children. It is of utmost importance
to us that a substantial number of people take part in the competition
and that the competition itself be of the highest quality.
This contest is also a good training how to look for new business
ideas. We also believe that our project will be the first step to arouse
young scientists' interest in social actions.
