THE EARL I. SPONABLE PAPERS

Fox Corporations Research and Development Division

Biography-Earl I. Sponable was born in Plainfield, N.Y., 18 September 1895, attendedpublic schools and in 19l6 received the degree of Bachelor of Chemistry fromCornell University. Following his graduation he established, with TheodoreW. Case, the Case Research Laboratory at Auburn, N.Y., holding the positionof Chief Research Chemist. During World War I he was a civilian consultantto the Naval Experimental Station at New London, Connecticut, working onsecret infra-red signalling systems. He remained at Case Laboratoriesuntil 1925, working primarily on electrical and mechanical components ofsound-on-film recording and reproducing; in the early 1920s he achievedsuccessful television transmission on a closed-circuit system.

Sponable joined the Fox Film Corporation in 1926, and was their ChiefEngineer and Director of Research until 1962. He held approximately twentypatents, primarily relating to sound on film, and was the primary developerof the Movietone News newsreels. He was an active member of the Society ofMotion Picture Engineers (later the Society of Motion Picture and TelevisionEngineers) and served as its president in 19^-9-1950. He died on 16 November1977.

' Earl I. Sponable, an Honorary Member of theSociety, died on 16 November 1977 at the age

,of 82 following a short illness.Bom in Plainfield, New York, 18 September

1895, be was graduated from Cornell Universityin 1916 with the degree of Bachelor of Chemis-try. Immediately after graduation, he joinedwith T. W. Case in establishing the Case Re-March Laboratory in Auburn, New York, and

%spent the next ten years in pure research anddevelopment work on audion amplifiers and onphoto-active materials, particularly of infraredsensitive types. Noteworthy among the devel-opments of these years were the first Thalofidecells, used as the basis of an infrared signallingsystem during the First World War. These waryears were spent as a civilian consultant at theNaval Experimental Station in New London,Conn.

After the war, Sponable returned to me case"J~! -search Laboratory, and activv!,, '...Uic^i^l

nself in the problems of recording sound-on-films. Under his direction. Case developedthe gas discharge lamp known as the Aeolightfor recording and the Thalofide cell for the re-production of sound. The Aeolight was used inthe Fox Movietone system as well as in the FoxWest Coast studio recording systems during the1931-33 period. This carry work on sound re-cording was made with the Thermophon mi-crophone designed and built by Earl Sponable,an unique utilization of heated platinum wiresresulting in a very high quality record. He de-signed most of the electrical and mechanicalunits required for a complete system of sound-on-film recording and reproducing, which con-stituted the basis for the sound motion-pictureindustry of today.

•Among these and subsequent developmentswas a single-system sound and picture camerawhich permitted recording the sound directly onthe sprocket, theater reproducing equipment, portable amplifying equipment, and a soundscreen of woven material that allowed the soundwaves to pass through and thus enabled theatersto install the speakers directly behind thescreen.

In the early twenties. Earl Sponable becameinterested in television and succeeded in trans-mitting 20-line pictures using 3 modified Nip-kow scanning drum.

hi 1926, he joined the Fox Film Corporationand assisted in the development of commercial«Wnd motion pictures, and in ihe same year

" ^ " ^ aix* built the first sound motion-pictureiio — soundproofed, acoustically treated and

air conditioned. In 1927, he participated in the creation of the

"fst sound newsreel and organized it into a*wldwide news coverage medium.

Peter Carl Gold mark

Peter Carl Goldmark, one of the great in-ventors of this age, was killed 7 December 1977in an automobile accident on the HutchinsonRiver Parkway in Westchester County. He was71 years old.

Only two weeks before his death he receivedthe National Medal of Science from PresidentCarter at a White House ceremony honoring Dr.Goldmark together with 14 other top scien-tists.

A man of vision, one of his plans for the futurewas the New Rural Society. Under this farreaching plan, new applications of communi-cations technologies would result in a more evendistribution of the population by a move awayfrom the congested urban centers to underde-veloped rural regions. Dr. Gold mark's concernfor .the future of this country — and theworld — had been frequently expressed. At onetime he had said, "Unless we plan for a radicalchange, by the year 2100 the depletion of ournonrenewable resources will probably bringabout a rapid end to our civilization."

Among Dr. Goldmark's revolutionary in-ventions are the long-playing record (introducedin 1948); the first successful color televisionbroadcast system: Electronic Video Recording(EVR); Held sequential color television; and thehigh-resolution readout and ground recordingsystem used in the VS. Lunar Obiter Program. The field sequential system, miniaturized by

com. on p. 9<ftUnder his technical direction. Movietone

News was equipped, running to over fifty crewsin all parts of the world. Among some of thenotable news items recorded by Earl Sponablewas the report on the Lindbergh flight andLindbergh's reception by President Coolidge.

From 1926 to 1962, he held the position ofTechnical Director in charge of research anddevelopment work of Fox Film Corporation, subsequently Twentieth Century-FoxvJyJrnCorporation. During the Second World War, heserved on \irz f TIm Conservation \_iftiimiuee «rfthe War Production Board and representedTwentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation in theTelevision Broadcasters Association.

During the early thirties. Earl Sponable madea survey of every color process known to litera-ture, or covered by patent; the more promisingones were actually set up in the laboratory andexperimentally checked. This led to the devel-opment of the lenticular color process which, with the cooperation of John Capstaff of East-man Kodak Co., was successfully demonstratedat the Roxy Theater in New York City.

In addition to his contributions to the devel-opment of sound-on-film and the extensiveprogram of color investigation (which has addedsubstantially to the fund of knowledge of thecorniT:cr~L:l problems entering into the pro-duction of ri.v'Wo pictures in color), he has beenresponsible for mu.v dt^iled developments inthe motion-picture fiela, "<*.h as the develop-ment of a system of wide film "••".-.T'm) soundmotion pictures called Fox Grandeui.'' -K nrstpicture. Fox Movietone Follies, opened in :'•>*•New York Gaiety Theater in September 1929.This was followed by Happy Days and The BigTrail at the Roxy Theater in 1930.

Some twenty years later, he supervised thedevelopment of CinemaScope, including the useof magnetic stereophonic sound on 35mm filmwith an anamorphic picture. Launched in 1953with the showing of The Robe, the systemachieved worldwide acceptance. Over 50.000theaters were equipped for showing wide screenmotion pictures.

Earl Sponable had been among the foremostin recognizing the relationship between motionpictures and television, particularly with respectto large screen theater presentation of televisedprogram material.

This was clearly reflected in his sponsorshipof the Swiss-developed Eidophor large screencolor television system (described in a paper byE. La bin in the April 1950 issue of the Journal)which bids fair to influence the creation of pro-viding television-distributed entertainment in thetheater with ampie illumination.

Earl Sponable can be characterized as onewho throughout the years always strove vigor-ously to improve the quality of the motion-pic-ture industry. Recognition of his personal andprofessional achievements b evident in the manyhonors and awards presented to him.

A member of the Society since 1926, he wasPresident for the 1949-1950 term. He was alsoa member of the Association for the Advance-ment of Science, a member of the AmericanChemical Society, Alpha Chi Sigma and SigmaXi.

In 1953 he received recognition from theAcademy of Motion-Picture Arts and Sciencesbeing awarded an Oscar for heading up the de-velopment of the CinemaScope system whichwas accepted internationally.

In addition, he received three SMPTE awardsin 1951: Honorary Membership for a lifetime'swork in the advancement of engineering in mo-tion pictures and television, the Progress MedalAward for outstanding technical contributionsto ihe motion-picture and television industries.
