PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Gudrun YngvadottirInternational President, Lions Clubs International

03 JANUARY 2019 THE LION

Hello, Lions.

hen we became Lions, we embarked on a journey Wtogether. We all started down a path of service, sharing kindness, bringing hope to our communities,

changing the lives of the people we serve, and changing our own along the way.

But in many respects, the service itself is a journey. It isn't something that comes together in a single day and it doesn't end when the event is over. It's a cycle of learning and doing and celebrating, so that we can continue evolving our work and expanding our capacity to serve.

We learn of a problem - perhaps it's an epidemic of diabetes in our hometown or a local population in need of medical care - and we begin to think of ways in which our club might help. We do some research, we reach out to people who know about the issue, and we learn more about the needs and the obstacles in our path. This is the learning and discovering that comes before the doing. And this makes the service we do that much better, because it's more informed, and more prepared, and ultimately more effective.

Reporting what we do and sharing our stories is also a key component to keeping the movement going. It is one thing to perform a good deed. It's another to perform a good deed and share the story of your service with others who may champion your cause or even join you in service - all because they were inspired by your story.

Remember, we're all on this journey together. We are all heading towards one goal - a better world - yet we are all taking different paths to get there. And the process of getting there is just as important as the destination. What is your path?

Yours,

Service is a Journey

EDITORIAL CHAIRMAN SPEAKS

Fo r L i o n s , J a n u a r y i s a n unforgettable month as our founder Melvin Jones was born on 13th January, 1879. My wife and I had the rare opportunity of visiting his birthplace - Fort Thomas, Arizona, USA, when I served as International Director. Born to Captain Calvin Jones and Lydia M. Gibler, Melvin

Jones studied law and music, but left halfway, and in 1913 joined an insurance company.

On 7th June, 1917 when he was 38 years old, he founded Lions Clubs International. Within a few years of the formation of Lions Club, Melvin Jones left his insurance job and devoted himself full-time to Lionism. He was never afraid to innovate and take risks. He was a member of the Chicago Central Lions Club and consistently sought the advice of members on how to make meetings more meaningful and lively.

He was a crusader, reformer, uplifter and organizer - wrote Roberty J.Casey and W.A.S.Douglas in the 1949 book ‘The World’s Biggest Doers.’ Melvin Jones laid a strong foundation for Lions Clubs and we continue to be the largest service organization in the world, serving millions of deserving people every year.

There are several remarkable quotes by our founder. My favourite Melvin Jones quote is: “Simplicity, sincerity and naturalness are elements in every great character.”I believe, we Lions should imbibe these elements in letter and spirit. During the International Convention in 1958, delegates affectionately conferred upon him the title ‘Secretary General for Life.’ A fitting tribute indeed! Melvin Jones passed away in 1961, at the age of 82.

In this month of his birth anniversary, let us rededicate ourselves to uphold the century-old traditions, culture and spirit of service embedded in each one of us and move forward as proud Lions, to serve more people in every nook and corner of the world.

With sincere Lionistic regards,

Er. R. MuruganEditor, The Lion (India)Past International Director, [email protected]

“You can bring in the difference”

Dear Friends in Service,

Happy New Year!

As the curtain rises on 2019, I am pleased to share a few developments that the Board of Management of Lion India Magazine Committee

has taken for the New Year.

The magazine, which connects the 2,90,000+ Lion members of this country, will, from now on, have eleven issues. You will be in touch with the happenings in Indian Lionism throughout the year. Isn’t that great?

And here is news for the SMART generation who prefers having information on their digital fingertips. Initiatives are underway to launch an online edition of the magazine wherein pages will not restrict your articles, stories, and experiences.

The Lion magazine (India Edition) will not only unveil a new scholarship scheme to support the deserving meritorious students of the country, but also support the Health Parks initiative to contribute towards a healthy India. You can rest assured that the Board of Management has left no stone unturned to ensure quality content and presentation.

All the charitable works the Magazine Committee intends to do require YOUR support with advertisements for funds. Let me draw your attention to the quote of Helen Keller, “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” We may be geographically separated on the surface yet the spirit of Lionism connects us all deeply.

Tomorrow is the first blank page of your future. Contribute to the cause of Lionism. You can bring in the difference with your new initiative, new vision, new goal and efforts to support the good works of the magazine.

Wish you and your near and dear ones a New Year filled with love, joy, peace, happiness, health, wealth, prosperity and all the goodness of time and nature.

Let our lives be a message of service.

Vijay Kumar RajuChairman, Board of Management, The Lion (India)Trustee & Secretary, LCIFInternational Director, LCI (2016-18)

Instead of having her spend time on the road, the Lions of MD 322 hosted her at a single venue, while the audience kept changing.

The New Voices team organized a Women's Symposium - Women Unplugged. Women achievers from various walks of life got together for a Panel Discussion. The bottomline was - women need to rewire their mind, build their confidence, refuse to get bogged down by gender stereotyping, and work to break free. President Gudrun felt that was exactly the purpose of initiating New Voices, which would help bring gender parity in our organization. The New Voice nominees of MD 322 were felicitated.

The DG teams and Council Executives dressed up as the naval team of Admiral President Gudrun at the special dinner. Each district gave a video report of their achievements during the year. President Gudrun then answered their queries and motivated them to go ‘Beyond the Horizon.’

The Leos greeted President Gudrun the next morning, with each wearing the Gudrun mask. It was a fun session and though they asked some tricky questions, our President gave very appropriate replies.

MD 322 15 - 16 DECEMBER, 2018 KOLKATA, WEST BENGAL

Lunch was with the Past District Governors of MD 322 in attendance. Once again, President Gudrun listened attentively to their suggestions and answered their questions in a befitting manner.

‘President Meets President’ was the most successful event, as 190 Club Presidents from all sub-districts of MD 322 travelled long distances to meet their International President. They had been challenged to take in five new members which gave them an opportunity to get a special cap from her hands. This was a great way to arrest the large drops we normally see in December. Presidents of Model Clubs for Campaign 100 were also recognized. President Gudrun heard them out as they shared their successes.

The gala dinner that night was a fun event. The President was escorted by the Directors and Past Directors, accompanied by the Council Chairperson and the District Governors. District 322B1 presented 125 Melvin Jones Fellows and a 200% MJF Club.

The short - but extremely meaningful - visit revitalized the districts and gave them an incentive to perform even better in the second half of the Lionistic year.

JANUARY 2019 THE LION 10

“Good things when short, are twice as good.” This was true of International President Gudrun's visit to MD 322 on 15th December, 2018. The visit of an International President is no doubt a special occasion, but what makes it even more significant is its ability to bring new vibrancy to the District. And this is exactly what happened in MD 322!

ANEW

CHALLENGE

Last year, I served as the International President for the world's largest service organization. This year, I am honoured to be the LCIF Chairman. To me,

both positions mean just one thing - Change. A chance to change Lionism.

This year, I am aiming for more than Change - I am hoping for a miracle. Miracles do not happen by luck, or divine intervention, or destiny. A miracle is not a big thing. It is a small thing done by many people. A small donation of `100 from each Indian Lion will guarantee a miracle this year - an increase in LCIF funding and service by many Multiples.

Thanks to you, we made massive progress for Lionism last year. One significant milestone was crossing $50 million in gifts to LCIF, a 35% increase from the previous year!

While we are all thrilled with that number, I think we can achieve 50 times more. Sounds unrealistic? Consider that less than 1 in 50 Lions in India gifted to LCIF. If each Lion gives a gift of just `100, and our big donors remain the same, we can easily raise 50 times the amount collected.

When I talk in dollars, you may think that your money would leave India. However, India is by far the biggest recipient of LCIF Funds! We receive over three times of what we give. Also, your Chairman of LCIF this year is also from India. I, therefore have come up with another expansion for LCIF - Lions Create India's Future.

A new levelThe unfortunate truth is that money is needed for service. The fortunate truth is that we only need a very small amount from each member.

Last year, you and I expanded our Power of We. India now has 289,351 members - less than 20,000 short of USA.

However, we need more than members. We need Lions. Lions take action. A simple donation of `100 per week is massive action as a country.

We need more than Clubs. We need a Lions culture. A culture where every Lion makes it a habit to give a tiny amount resulting in massive change for the country.

In the past 6 months, I have visited many Lions in many countries. I have collected pledges and gifts in millions of dollars from many Lion leaders. Many Lions have given verbal promises.

You are the FutureHowever much I travel though, I know I can meet only a small percentage of Lions. That is why I am writing to you, to enlist your support. I ask you to believe in your ability to change Lionism. While I am on top of the ladder, this ladder is tall, only because of you.

Every `100 that you give is another step in the ladder. If you believe in the Power of Me - your Power to create change - our Association will be tall enough for the entire world to look up to.

In the last 45 years of being a Lion, I gain the most pride by seeing LCIF projects - large hospitals, eye care centres, old age homes, food banks, exercise areas, etc.

We all pray to God, but our prayers can only be answered by the people around us. If we listen to the desperate prayers all around us, maybe all of us will be blessed by God above.

DISTRICT NEWS MD 317[ KARNATAKA, GOA AND PART OF ANDHRA PRADESH

In 1982, the youth wing of Bangalore Host, the very first Lions Club in Karnataka, took the lead in developing the school under the stewardship of Sanjay Udani. Built at a cost of `72,000/- this was the only school for children of the surrounding villages. In 1995-96, the school had 12 classrooms allowing it to expand from a Primary School to a High School.

Because there’s more to a school than just classrooms...It is a proven fact that good school infrastructure, with renewed spaces not only improves attendance and the interest of students but also enhances their performance. Bangalore Host Lions Club, therefore, under the guidance of Capt. Siva Subramanyam, established a Science Laboratory, a full-fledged Computer Lab with 40 computers, indoor and outdoor Auditoriums, drinking water facility and toilets for staff and students. Sewing machines were also provided for vocational training programmes.

A new block consisting of Principal’s Chamber, Staff Room and more Classrooms became operational from July 2018. And more recently a Children’s Park was

A Government School in North Bengaluru which started with just 4 classrooms now accommodates more than 800 students in 36 classrooms!

inaugurated at the School, which has come as a boon to the students.

The Club has spent around `6.50 crores till date, to enhance the school infrastructure and create an environment that’s conducive to learning. Besides generous contributions from Lions and philanthropists, the fund for this continuing endeavour has also come from corporates like Via.Com and RBI Note Mudran, Mysore.

Over the years, Bangalore Host Lions Club has not only displayed continuity in leadership but also demonstrated that “Outstanding people have one thing in common : an absolute sense of mission”.

Bangalore Host Lions Club made it possible for this school to spread its wings…

District 321A3 is working to reduce the economic burden of

Anaemia Working tirelessly to change these statistics in District 321A3 is Region Chairperson Hardeep Singh. Besides spreading awareness about this ‘silent killer’ among women in India, he has also been at the forefront in organizing anaemia check-up camps in girls’ schools within his entire region.

“Anaemia is a global issue,” he points out “614 million women across the world are believed to be anaemic. My efforts are to minimise these statistics within the geographical boundaries of District 321A3.”

Nutrition alone cannot address the problem since poor hygiene can also

result in anaemia, by preventing absorption of nutrition. Understanding this, a comprehensive approach has been adopted to create awareness and educate young girls.

Appreciating the initiative, District Governor Varinder Hans said: “I am

really impressed with Region Chairperson Hardeep Singh for his remarkable efforts in carrying out hemoglobin tests in many girls’ schools within his region, which have benefitted more than 3,500 students.”

“The success of this project is that every club of the region

has participated wholeheartedly and the work is still going on... I will make sure that other regions also participate in the same manner,” said Past District Governor C.S.Mehta, under whose guidance the project was framed.

India is home to the largest number of anaemic women in the world – with 51% of all women of reproductive age suffering from this condition. The 2017 Global Nutrition Report reveals that India comes at the bottom in the table with highest number of women suffering from anaemia followed by China, Pakistan, Nigeria and Indonesia.

Lions Quest, LCIF's social and emotional learning curriculum, is in more than 100 countries around the globe. It has positively touched the lives of more than 17 million children, giving them the skills they need to live happy, successful lives. While giving the students a connection to school, Lions Quest teaches positive behavior, character education, anti-bullying, drug and alcohol awareness, and service-learning.

Here is just some of the praise Lions Quest has received from students and teachers:

“I teach special education to sixth grade students who have difficulty expressing their ideas and emotions. I've used Lions Quest in my classroom for two years and feel it's helped spur meaningful conversations I may not otherwise have been equipped to have. Certain features of Lions Quest, like ticklers and energizers, lighten the classroom atmosphere, allowing my students and me to relax a bit before digging into tough subjects. Thanks to the Lions Quest program, I'm able to understand my students on a much deeper level.”– Lisa Moran, teacher, Mulligan Middle School, Central Islip, NY, USA

“Lions Quest can't change things people do or say, but it helped me understand how to handle things when people do or say things I don't like.”- Thomas, eighth grade student, Anchorage, Alaska, USA

“This program has elevated my students' classroom participation and interest to a whole new level. Students became more comfortable and skilled in expressing themselves in different ways, such as singing, dancing, rapping, etc. This correlated to an improvement in their academic performance. The program's enjoyable classroom, group, and family activities gave students a sense of belonging that has inspired their lives. Lions Quest is of benefit to anyone who wants to be an inspirational teacher and impact students for life. Such an individual could positively change the lives of many children through this program.”- Nicolette Russell, teacher, Lewis Yard Primary School, Grand Bahama, Bahamas.

Social and Emotional Learning in IndiaIn the 2017-2018 Lions year, more than 111,000 students in India were reached through Lions Quest. That is 111,000 more students who are learning how to make positive life decisions, handle their emotions constructively, and avoid bad habits. In that time, more than 5,000 teachers were trained to use the Lions Quest curriculum in their classroom, so they can make a positive difference in the lives of children and their families for many years to come. In August 2017, LCIF awarded a Lions Quest grant to India for program expansion.

One particularly successful Lions Quest program took place last year in Delhi, India. Lions Quest lessons were adapted to pilot a gender-based-violence-prevention program. Educating youth on gender equity from a young age is vital to end the cycle of gender-based violence and inequality.

Through Campaign 100: LCIF Empowering Service, our foundation will reduce the prevalence of diabetes and improve the quality of life for those diagnosed.

Diabetes is a global epidemic, and one of the fastest-growing in the world. In 2017, 425 million adults were living with diabetes and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) expects that number to rise to 629 million by the year 2045. It is a leading cause of death globally and a leading cause of blindness and visual impairment. This causes massive negative repercussions with regard to personal and familial well-being, community development, and economic growth and prosperity.

Through Campaign 100, Lions have an opportunity to be a major part of the response to this global epidemic. LCIF will support Lions in helping prevent diabetes through multi-faceted, comprehensive health initiatives that are targeted to communities across the globe.

LCIF has long-supported Lions in their efforts to fight diabetes. Diabetes Grants fund large-scale, Lions-led projects that expand diabetes prevention, education, and treatment access to under-served populations. In 2016 and 2017, LCIF funded more than US$650,000 to support 27 pilot diabetes projects around the world. This platform enables LCIF to make efficient and effectiveinvestments in:Ÿ Sustaining and establishing world-class diabetes

management and control services through diabetes camps, comprehensive diabetes screening events, healthcare infrastructure and human resource capacity building;

Ÿ Establishing an operational research program that will investigate gaps between the accessibility and affordability of comprehensive diabetes care, and communities in need of services; and,

Ÿ Increasing comprehensive diabetes screening and health education activities linked to primary and secondary healthcare services.

LCIF also supports diabetic retinopathy programs through the SightFirst program.

Diabetes: Lions' New Signature CauseBY JAMIE KONIGSFELD

Ÿ India is the country with the second-largest number of adults with diabetes, with more than 72 million cases in 2017, nearly nine percent of the population.

Ÿ That number is expected to increase by more than double, 151 million, by 2045.

Ÿ Around 128,500 children in India have type 1 diabetes, making India the country with the second-largest number of children with type 1 diabetes.

Ÿ According to IDF, around 58 percent of the people in India living with diabetes do not know they have the disease.

Ÿ Nearly one million people die from diabetes every year in India.

REGISTRATION PROCEDURES FOR MILAN, ITALY CONVENTION FOR BANGLADESH, INDIA, NEPAL, NIGERIA, PAKISTAN AND SRI LANKA

Dear Lion Members,

We are happy to inform you that the new registration procedure adopted for the Las Vegas International Convention by

the International headquarters for the Lions of Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh was a success. We were informed by headquarters that 88% of those that registered via this new process ended up cancelling but avoided paying the registration fee in advance and then waiting for a refund less cancellation fee.

This year too, we have been requested by our headquarters to adopt the same registration process. However, this year the same registration process will be applicable for Lions of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Nigeria attending the Milan International Convention.

As you may be aware, our goal is to make convention registration for Lions needing visas, hassle-free and seamless. Hence, we have adopted the process to register in advance but not to collect payment until they are onsite. However, please note that Bank deposit will not be accepted in advance or onsite.

The Lions and the official travel agents should send the details of Lion members attending the Milan International Convention in the Registration & Housing Form to the Regional Office (ISAAME Region) at [email protected].

The office will closely work with Lions in collecting the information and communicating the registration process, in case of any queries.
