OurMissionand HistoryNamaste Charter School, a public
elementary and middle school on
Chicagos underserved Southwestside, opened in 2004 to combat the
diverse challenges facing children
growing up in low-income, urban
neighborhoods. Namaste started
with Kindergarten and first grade,
expanding one grade per year until it
became a full K-8 school in fall 2011.
By breaking down barriers to healthful
foods, regular exercise, and opportunities
for high academic achievement, Namastebuilds all students independent academic
and wellness skills so they graduate from
Namaste fully prepared for success in high
school and beyond, and possess a repertoire of
strategies for making positive wellness choices
throughout their lives.
Namaste makes a measurable difference in
childrens lives by implementing and sharing
a groundbreaking approach to education that
combines health and wellness with rigorousacademics in a peaceful environment.

Setting a New Standard:
HolisticModelNamaste Charter Schools holistic
approach to education is one-of-a-
kind. Students begin the day with
a healthy breakfast, an important
precursor for Morning Movement
that takes place immediately before
the start of classroom instruction. A
well-balanced lunch and structured
play at recess sets students up for an
afternoon of learning. Namaste students
learn about nutrition and wellness,
engage in the Peaceful People curriculum
and understand ways to promote social-
emotional growth.
Core programs include:
60 minutes of daily Physical Education
Morning Movement exercises
Nutritious breakfast and lunch program
Balanced, literacy-based academic curriculum
Conflict resolution and character
education programming
Age-appropriate nutrition and wellness curricula
Dual Language Spanish immersion option

Namaste students are excelling academically. But as the school leader,
I am most proud that our students are thoughtful citizens. They know
how to relate to adults and to one another and they know how to solve
problems peacefullywhich is critical both here at Namaste and once they
leave our doors.
ALLISON SLADE, FOUNDER AND PRINCIPAL
What I am bringing to high school is how to make good
choicesthats what I have learned most at Namaste.
I know its up to me to make the right choices about what
I will be eating, how hard I am going to try in schoolbut my teachers here made sure I am ready.
KRYSTAL, MEMBER OF NAMASTES FIRST GRADUATING CLASS
Children need to move and at Namaste, our students
understand how physical activity helps them become better
learnerstheyve really internalized that. The fact that
students are not only active but also understand the
importance of our schools mission really makes me smile.
