Recruitment• What is it?• Recruitment is when college coaches search for the top

players to play on their team.• Coaches are constantly recruiting• They attend games, they will make notes such as your name,

what team you play on, your number and your position• College coaches might call your school coach, travel coach to

see what type of player you are• They do this to really get a feel for if you would fit into their

program

Recruitment Continued…• A popular site that is used to help you get recruited is called ncsasports.org • The site provides all your information1. A highlight video2. Your accomplishments such as awards3. GPA, class rank and ACT 4. A personal statement•Has lists of colleges everywhere, provides college contact information, how large the school is, religious affiliation (etc.)

Recruitment Continued…• Here is a link to my very own NCSA profile• http://

www.ncsasports.org/womens-volleyball-recruiting/mi/lapeer/lapeer-west-high-school/hannah-wagner1• You need to start getting yourself out there starting your

sophomore year• However, it is never too late to get recruited• The more footage you have, the more of a chance you have for a

better highlight video• If you have been getting recruited, that means you are on the look

out by college coaches, they will search you on the internet, that being said, it might be a good idea to put another video, on youtube

Recruitment Continued…• It is important to send emails to college coaches letting them know that you are interested• Send them your schedule and invite them to matches and to tournaments• College coaches are busy, if they don’t respond within 48 hours, send another email, if they don’t respond for another 24 hours, send another one• Always respond to a college coach, even if you are not interested in the school, the coach could possibly get hired at a school that you are interested in

Interview With Bob Halbedel

Q: What process do you have to go through to recruit?A: We have to constantly watch kids play, talk to parents and kids to generate interest, evaluate how much money in scholarships to offer---then have a visit to campus to see if our program is the right fit for the kid.

Page 13: NAIA College Volleyball Coach (Rules, Recruitment and Interview)

Q: Do you run summer camps?A: We are starting summer camps

Page 14: NAIA College Volleyball Coach (Rules, Recruitment and Interview)

Q: When do you start your season?A: Conditioning starts July 20th

Page 15: NAIA College Volleyball Coach (Rules, Recruitment and Interview)

Q: How much stress is put into coaching and why?A: Lots of stress---because you are not only dealing with coaching ,but recruiting, development, team chemistry, organizing practices, travel plans, tournaments, (etc.)

Page 16: NAIA College Volleyball Coach (Rules, Recruitment and Interview)

Q: How much planning do you put into practice time? A: We plan practice constantly to meet the needs of our team

Page 17: NAIA College Volleyball Coach (Rules, Recruitment and Interview)

Q: How much conditioning do you do during the season?A: Conditioning always takes place in one way or another all season----not directly running sprints but other drills that the kids don't even realize is conditioning.

Page 18: NAIA College Volleyball Coach (Rules, Recruitment and Interview)

Q: Do you talk to your players about nutrition? How much should they be eating? What types of foods should they be consuming?A: We talk some about nutrition but lets face it young adults are going to eat what they want

Page 19: NAIA College Volleyball Coach (Rules, Recruitment and Interview)

Q: Do you do team bonding activities? If so, why?A: We try to have a cookout or two, but most of the kids hang out together anyways.

Page 20: NAIA College Volleyball Coach (Rules, Recruitment and Interview)

Q: How much do you depend on recruiting websites such as NCSA and YouTube for highlight film? A: We do depend on highlight film a lot because that way we are able to go back to the film as many times as needed to evaluate the player. NCSA is perfect for this. Also, if they have a youtube video, it becomes extremely helpful because it is very easy to search and use. https://youtu.be/bJ5sShGRP7U

Page 21: NAIA College Volleyball Coach (Rules, Recruitment and Interview)

Q: In what ways are you able to coach to the extent where you are able to be demanding, yet are able to keep your players mentally tough and still respect you? A: I think that as long as you explain the reasons why we do things and show why they make the kids better, they will respect you. You have to let them know it is for them. They should be more demanding of themselves.

Why I Chose This Topic• I chose this topic because playing volleyball is

something that I am very passionate about. • I have always been interested in what college coaches

go through in order to get the best team possible. • I am playing college volleyball and now am more

appreciative of my coaches because now I know the process of what they do.
