The New AlbanyFloyd County Animal Shelter ispartnering with several areaorganizations to celebrateOctober’s national designationas “Adopt A Shelter DogMonth” by holding a monthlong Dogtoberfest Celebration.The kickoff will be part ofNew Albany’s Live At Five onFriday, September 28th indowntown New Albany. Musicwill be provided by WaxFactory, a local pop/rock band,and food and drink will beprovided by area vendors. OurDogtoberfest Partner, TheExchange, will be there withBeer Cheese samples. TheShelter will be attending withthe Wags and Whiskers Wagonbetween 5 and 7PM withadoptable animals in tow.

Demodectic MangeDemodectic

mange is a skin disease thataffects the hair follicles of adultdogs and puppies. It is oftencalled “red mange”, “puppymange”, or Demodex. It is themost common form of mange indogs. It is important to note thatthere are two different mangemites which cause skin diseasein dogs. One lives under thesurface of the skin, while theother, demodex, lives inside thehair follicles of the skin.Although both mites sharesimilar characteristics, there aresignificant differences. It isimportant not to confuse the twotypes of mange because theyhave much different causes andtreatments. A visit to yourveterinarian is necessary toestablish a diagnosis andtreatment.

Demodecticmange has two forms; localizedor generalized. General signsand symptoms may include hairloss - most commonly around theeyes, muzzle, and various placeson the head. These areas of bareskin will look red and flaky orcrusty - these are commonlyreferred to as lesions. Localizeddemodectic mange will usuallyappear with a few patches ofhair loss around the face andhead area. General demodecticmange will usually appear withmultiple lesions involving theentire body.

Demodecticmange does not itch severely,even though lesions will bepresent. You will probably not

notice your dog itching andscratching excessively.Demodectic mange is notcontagious to other dogs orpeople. Remember, this mite isnormally found in the hairfollicles, so therefore exposureto an infected dog is notdangerous.

Demodecticmange is caused by an ecto-parasite called Demodex canis.This little mite lives in the hairfollicles of dogs and it is normalto find small numbers of theseon dogs and humans. However, ifthe immune system iscompromised or not fullydeveloped, especially in puppies,these mites increase inpopulation causing a diseasecalled mange. An increase instress can also cause theimmune system to not be asefficient. This is why demodecticmange is most commonly seen indogs less than two years of age.Adult dogs that have Demodex

usually have defective immunesystems. Diagnosis beginswith a complete history and aphysical exam. Skin scrapingviewed through a microscopecan give a veterinarian apositive or negative diagnosisfor mange.

The treatment forlocalized demodectic mange isusually done using topicalmedications, shampoos, andsometimes dips. In some cases,the localized areas will heal ontheir own, and won’t requireaggressive treatments. Speak toyour veterinarian before startingany type of treatment.Demodectic mange is not apreventable condition. Inpuppies the mites are passeddirectly from mother to puppy. Ifa puppy has an underdevelopedimmune system, the mitesoverpopulate, causing theinfection. This is also why it isimportant to have animalsaltered that may have an issuewith mange.

The treatment oflocalized and generalized mangecan be quite successful.However, if the immune systemis defective, treatments can bedifficult. In these cases, puppiesand adult dogs will need furtherdiagnostic work and morecomplex treatment plans toaddress the underlying immunesystem dysfunction. It is possibleto have multiple outbreaks ofmange with your dog, but as theimmune system strengthens,these become fewer.

No Scaredy CatsThis Halloween: Top 10 SafetyTips for Pet ParentsAttention, animal lovers, it'salmost the spookiest night ofthe year! The ASPCA and theShelter recommends takingsome common senseprecautions this Halloween tokeep you and your pet saying"trick or treat!" all the way toNovember 1.

No tricks, notreats: That bowl of candy isfor trick-or-treaters, not forScruffy and Fluffy. Chocolatein all forms—especially dark orbaking chocolate—can be verydangerous for dogs and cats.Candies containing theartificial sweetener xylitol canalso cause problems. If you dosuspect your pet has ingestedsomething toxic, please callyour veterinarian or theASPCA Animal Poison ControlCenter at (888) 426-4435.

PopularHalloween plants such aspumpkins and decorative cornare considered to be relativelynontoxic, but they can producestomach upset in pets whonibble on them.

Wires and cordsfrom electric lights and otherdecorations should be kept outof reach of your pets. If

chewed, your pet might suffercuts or burns, or receive apossibly life-threateningelectrical shock.

A carvedpumpkin certainly is festive,but do exercise caution if youchoose to add a candle. Petscan easily knock a lit pumpkinover and cause a fire. Curiouskittens especially run the riskof getting burned or singed bycandle flames.

Dress-up can bea big mess-up for some pets.Please don't put your dog orcat in a costume UNLESS youknow he or she loves it (yup, afew pets are real hams!). Forpets who prefer their “birthdaysuits,” however, wearing acostume may cause unduestress.

If you do dressup your pet, make sure thecostume isn't annoying orunsafe. It should not constrictthe animal's movement or

hearing, or impede his abilityto breathe, bark or meow. Also,be sure to try on costumesbefore the big night. If yourpet seems distressed, allergicor shows abnormal behavior,consider letting him go aunaturale or donning a festivebandana.

Take a closerlook at your pet’s costume andmake sure it does not havesmall, dangling or easilychewed-off pieces that hecould choke on. Also, ill-fittingoutfits can get twisted onexternal objects or your pet,leading to injury.

All but the mostsocial dogs and cats should bekept in a separate room awayfrom the front door duringpeak trick-or-treating hours.Too many strangers can bescary and stressful for pets.

When openingthe door for trick-or-treaters,take care that your cat or dogdoesn't dart outside.

IDs, please!Always make sure your dog orcat has proper identification. Iffor any reason your petescapes and becomes lost, acollar and tags and/or amicrochip can be a lifesaver,increaing the chances that heor she will be returned to you.

This program hasbeen designed to get somemuch needed energy burnt offfor the dogs at the shelter, aswell as help get and/or keepthe volunteers in shape. Thiswill help relieve some of thestress shelter dogs feel andpossibly make them moreadoptable.

Happy Tails: NiaNia, formally known as

Nina, came to the shelter as astray, with a puppy, believed tohave been her own. Bothlooked really rough withmissing hair and bad skin. Aftera flea treatment and a gooddiet, the two began to flourish.

Nia was adoptedand returned once but shortlyafter that she found her foreverhome. She is now confidentthat her owner will be comingback and races her to the bedat night to secure the best spotunderneath the covers.

Older then hernew friend Terra, Nia is just aslively now. "They cuddle, theysleep together, they chase eachother around the house inexplosive games of zoomdoggie that I keep waiting toend in either a Chihuahua-shaped imprint on my wall orneeding some balm for carpetburn on footpads."

Nia couldn't havefound a better suited home.Sometimes the first home isn'tmeant to be. That doesn't meanthe dog isn't perfect for

another family, as Nia's storyproves.

Nail TrimsKeeping a

dogs toe nails trimmed isimportant. When ananimals nails get too longit can causeuncomfortable pressureon the feet as it pushesthe pads upward. If leftunattended, it can evenwrap underneath andgrow into the pad.

When it istime to trim your dog'snails, you can do it one ofseveral ways. You can usedog nail clippers or apedi-paw type of tool.Nail trims are stressful sosome dogs become veryfearful. Having a vet orgroomer do them may bethe safest way.

If doingthem yourself, make sureto not cut them too short.Hitting the quick can bevery painful. Also, don'tforget the dewclaws.
