In 2013, there were 3 states with a significantly higher 4th grade score than Indiana and 10 states with a score not significantly different than Indiana. Indiana’s 4th grade score continued the state’s trend of exceeding the national average. Indiana’s score was 8 points higher than the national average in 2013 compared to 4 points higher than the national average in 2011. Indiana’s 2013 4th grade score increased 5 points over the previous administration. This level of increase has not been seen in Indiana since 2007. Indiana was one of only 12 states in the U.S. to show a statistically significant increase in only 4th grade mathematics scores from 2011 to 2013. In 2013, Indiana had the highest score in the nation for Hispanic students, as compared to all states that tested Hispanic students. Scores for Indiana’s Hispanic students showed an 8-point increase in 2013. Scores for Indiana’s black students showed a 4-point increase in 2013. Indiana’s score was the 4th highest in the nation in 2013, improving

from the 17th highest score in 2011. In 2013, there were 3 states with a

significantly higher 4th grade score than Indiana and 10 states with a

score not significantly different than Indiana.

There was a 3% decrease in the number of students who scored Below Basic in 2013 (20%) compared to 2011 (23%).

There was a 4% increase in the number of students who scored At or Above Proficient in 2013 (38%) compared to 2011 (34%).

There was a 3% increase in the number of students who scored Advanced in 2013 (10%) compared to 2011 (7%).

Indiana’s Hispanic student group is the racial/ethnic group that showed the

most improvement in Grade 8. Indiana’s Hispanic students have shown the

most improvement among all racial ethnic groups since 2003.

Indiana Ethnical Average Student Scale Scores

Indiana’s 8th grade average score continued the state’s trend of exceeding the national average. Indiana’s score was 4 points higher than the national average in 2013 compared to 2 points higher than the national average in 2011. Indiana’s 2013 8th grade average score increased 3 points over the previous administration. This level of increase has not been seen in Indiana since 2007.

In 2013, Indiana ranked 6th in terms of percent of 8th grade students scoring at Advanced, improving from 16th in 2011.

In 2013, 5 states had a higher percentage of students scoring at Advanced than Indiana, 21 states had the same percentage as Indiana, and 26 states had a lower percentage of students scoring at Advanced than Indiana. Figure B

In 2011, 7% of Indiana’s students scored at Advanced on the NAEP assessment. At that time, 15 states had a higher percentage of students scoring at Advanced than Indiana, 30 states had the same percentage as Indiana, and 7 states had a lower percentage of students scoring at Advanced than Indiana. Overall Results

There was a 2% increase in the number of students who scored At or Above Basic in 2013 (80%) compared to 2011 (78%).

There was a 2% increase in the number of students who scored At or Above Proficient in 2013 (32%) compared to 2011 (30%).

Indiana had higher achievement percentages in 3 of the 4 performance levels in 2013.
