• Scored 2 perfect 10s on the balance beam and uneven bars in 1980

• Team, all-around silver, beam & floor gold • She was retired in 1984 at the age of 22

• Govt feared that she might defect to America• So they no longer allowed her to travel to

Western countries• She met Paniat, who helped her in escaping to

• Won the inaugural American Cup in 1976• First gymnast to won 3 consecutive all-around

European titles • Graduated from the Physical Education and

Sports in Bucharest in 1984• In 1999 she was among the list of the 25

outstanding sports people of the 20th century

• Only person to get international Olympics Committee highest honour twice– The Olympic Order(1984 and 2004)
