Om. Impelled by what or whom does the mind pursue its desires? Yoked

by whom does the first of the vital airs begin its movement? Impelled by

whom do people speak what they speak? What divinity engages the

The pleasure of the tman is what the world calls religion.

The prime goal of Education must be to

develop character. The foremost duty of

an educated person is to serve as a

conscience-keeper of society. This is not

    possible unless one follows ones

conscience. If you go back to the

Mahabharata you will realize that the

    great Bhishma and Dronacharya

remained silent at a crucial moment when

they ought to have spoken strongly. This

shows that they have failed in their role as

conscience-keepers. Of what use then was

    their so-called knowledge?

Today most of us have abdicated our

    moral responsibility and remain silent

when we ought to raise a strong protest.Man is a limb of society and society is a

limb of mankind. If we forget this, we can

get into all kinds of problems as in fact is

    presently happening. When disaster

strikes a Nation it is our foremost duty to

rise to the occasion and render all help

that is needed. It is very ridiculous if we

think. "It is all Gods will. Those who suffer

are destined to do so. Let us leave them

alone. We have no business to sit injudgement on others. We are not here to

analyze the Law of Karma but to render

service. That is what true love and

    compassion are all about.

    Quotes bySwami Vivekananda

3Concentrating on the powers of the mind is the

    only way to knowledge.

Every moment in your life you are

experiencing all the four yugas i.e.

Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dwapara Yuga

and Kali Yuga. When you are totally

immersed in Satvic thoughts you are

enjoying Satya Yuga. If you are

    slightly inclined towards Rajas, you

    will be experiencing Treta Yuga.

When you are more inclined towardsRajas and less of Satvic then you are

    experiencing Dwapara Yuga. When

there is no Satva and you are delving

deep into Rajas and Tamas then you

    are in Kali yuga.

    So, every moment you are

    experiencing Pralaya. That

    happened to Ramana Maharshi and

at that moment he experiencedDeath. Death is nothing but Pralaya.

You fail to understand this because

you are deeply engrossed in worldly

    affairs. Your life revolves around

    your kith and kin.

    Look at Gods creation. Brahmas

Day and Night is happening in the

body itself. If you are aware of this

you can experience the same at this

    very moment. Everything dissolves

in the night which is nothing but

    your EGO. When you identify

yourself with your body or ego it is

    worldly death and not spiritual

death. When you are able to

    separate yourself from your Ego,

then you can experience the Day

    or Night. YOU ARE THAT!

Just as much as the world is for us, so we also are for the world.

    THE ROYAL PATH

You have many paths to reach to the

ultimate. Whatever path you choose to

reach your goal is the Royal path for you.

But there is a path which is very

practical and scientific and that is Yoga.

Yoga is the path of the highest among

all the paths. It is a science of the self,

experimented and experienced by oursages and saints. In Himalayas it is being

practiced by many yogins. Yoga is not a

mere theory. Practical approach of yoga

brings light into the life. Yoga

doesnt belong to one sect of

the mass; it is applicable to everyone in

the universe. It doesnt have any

limitations. It is an eternal and immortal

science which deals with your soul and

    the highest knowledge among

all vidyas in the universe. One can feel

    Yogas infinite power only by

experiencing it. Thats why it is called

    the Royal path.

There are various streams of yoga

    described and experienced by our

    enlightened souls, and sages.

    Japayoga,

    Bhaktiyoga, Jnanayoga , Karmayoga,

    Tantrayoga etc..

Yoga is not an ancient myth buried in

oblivion. It is the most valuable

inheritance of the present. It is the

essential need of today and the

    culture of tomorrow.

    - Swami Satyananda Saraswathi.

Yoga is the culture. Culture does not

mean rules and regulations. But it is

the way of life where we learn the

systematic way of living in the world

    physically and mentally.

    Because of todays competitive

    world, modern man is constantly

under pressure. As a result he is

suffering from many ailments. So yoga

is a unique science which works on your

subtle level rather than gross level. If

you take any ailment or problem we

want imm ediate relief, not the

permanent solution. We try to cut the

branches of the tree rather than

cleansing the roots. Yoga helps you to

remove the deep rooted problems and

miseries. Yoga is a formula for the

health of body, mind and the soul.

Yoga is a way of living. In this busy world

where we forget to lead healthy and

meaningful life, Yoga takes care ofevery aspect of your life. Yoga is a

beautiful and powerful tool to reach

    the ultimate or supreme reality.

Goswami Sant Tulasi Das, the creator

of this Sacred Lake of Deeds of Rama,

    lived between 1543A.D.-1623 A.D. He

was born on the seventh day afterAmavas of Shravan in Rajapur in Uttar

Pradesh. Rama Bhola was his original

    name. He was supposedly abandoned

after birth. Guru Narahari Das who took

him into his wing gave him the name

Tulasi Das after the sacred leaves. In

his association Tulasi Das wandered all

    over North India, received spiritual

    enrichment and also studied Valmikis

Ramayana. Due to his ignorance of

Sanskrit language, it took him many

readings to grasp the sweetness of the

    nectar of Ramayana which determined

him to rewrite the Adikavya in simple

    language.

Tulasi Das, on reaching youth married

Ratnavali to whom he was so attached

that he could not bear separation even

for a short time. In fact his wife

    reproached him for his excessive

attachment and advised him to show

that affection on Rama. That awakened

the Viveka of the great soul whobecame an ascetic and pursued his

childhood goal in Awadh a dialect of

Hindi. He wrote 22 works but the epic

    Ramcharitmanas is the jewel among

them as the work expresses his loving-

Devotion for his beloved deity Sri Rama

and which he preached all over North

India. In Hanuman Chalisa, the widely

sung prayer in the world, Supreme

Bhakti of Hanuman, the highest ideal

for any seeker is extolled. The Gospel of

Sri Rama also carries his message of

    brotherly love, compassion and selfless

    service for fellow human beings.

Tulasi Dass birthday falls on the

28th July this year. The day is celebrated

by reading Ramcharit manas in temples

all over India. Our tributes to the Self-

realized Saint-Poet who sung the glory

    of the Maryada Purushottam, Sri Rama;

the Sweetest word in the Universe, the

    road to Salvation.

    1. How does Yoga help our day to

    day life?

Ans: We all are aware of Yoga and its

    eight limbs. Without entering into

depth of this ocean let us understand

how only one limb can bring beauty in

life. Take an example of Yogasana and

start analyzing how it takes care of

all levels of our development. People

    have completely misunderstood

that Asanas also can bring beauty in

life. What we need today is physically

    strong, mentally balanced,

    emotionally charged,

    i n t e l l e c t u a l l y s h a r p e n e d a n d

    spiritually elevated personality and

    that can be brought through

simple asanas. The day should come

in life when every moment of life

    becomes yogathats why yogic life

style is more important to live in thisworld. Discipline and harmony is what

we are expecting and that can be

made a unique part of our lives by

practicing regular yoga. Live and let

live is what the true expression of

    yogic life style is.

    2. Is practicing yoga essential for

    realization?

Ans: Nothing is related to realization.

    Realization is that when

you are not, what you pretend to

be. Realization dawns when you are

    completely empty within and without.

Filling that emptiness with silence is

    realization. Realization cannot be

measured. The depth of the realization

can be felt or experienced or even seen

    through various spiritual actions. And

if you find any action that brings

harmony into life, light into life or

spirituality into life, then yes it can be

one of the finest tools for

realization. Therefore yoga can be a

great tool to realization but not

really necessary. It depends on our

unique package that we got in this

birth. There are realized souls whonever heard about yoga or practiced

yoga but today when you look at them

you can see that they are living life like

a yogi. Their every action speaks only

and only yoga. Their very breath

becomes yoga. Thats what we want.

    The well groomed,

    talkative, talented,

    expressive boy

    Srikanth is studying

    5th Class in Nachiketa

    Tapovans Vidya

Mandir. His association with Tapovandates back to 2002 when Vasundhara

Ma and a few volunteers of Nachiketa

Tapovan would go to the slum areas

with food packets, collect a group of kids

and teach them alphabets while their

parents would be toiling away to earn a

    square meal. Srikanths mother was

reluctant to let him study with the group

but slowly yielded to his persistence.

Later when Nachiketa Tapovanestablished itself with a building and

    bigger team of volunteers, Srikanth

    started attending the Vidya Mandir

regularly. There were a few more

hurdles and gaps in his student career

but his motivation and the Tapovan

teams love and care for the kids made

    things happen. In his words,

Why Srikanth comes to Vidya Mandir-

I love to come here. In the first few years

I would come here at noon to get banana

and run away but now I come here

because this is our home. We all receive

so much love and care. My peers going

    to other schools receive beatings

whereas we are respected and also

    pampered here. Ammas and Akkas

teach well and show lot of concern.

    Srikanths Favorite person in

    Tapovan- SWAMIJI! Swamiji loves us

a lot. He buys us things we ask for, like

Cricket bats, games etc. He plays

cricket and jokes with us. At the same

time He teaches us discipline with her

love and motivates us to study well.

    Things Srikanth is learning at

    Tapovan- Only after coming to

Tapovan I learnt cleanliness and body

hygiene and punctuality. Now I learn

    Yoga, Sloka-chanting, Arts and Crafts,

and all the subjects. I also learnt

Karate for sometime but the teacher

is not coming now. My favorite

    teacher is Subhamma. I like

    Subhamma because she teaches us

    discipline with her love.

Srikanths aim in life- I want to study

hard and become a doctor, construct

a building and start a school for poor

    children like Swamiji did!

Srikanth is one plant of Tapovan! Thereare about hundred and fifty more of

them in Tapovan. Even if some of them

nurture similar goals and ideals, world

is going to be a much Greener and

    Happier place to be!

In consistence with Swami Vivekanandas message Arise! Awake! And Stop not till the Goal is Reached!

Tapovan has been incessantly taking up new projects and conducting several activities for all ages and all walks

of life. Building a service-oriented support system in a Joint-family setting, for the senior citizens has been one

such dream of Nachiketa Tapovan which is indeed taking shape, thanks to all the donors and well wishers.

    Vanaprastha indicates the

    beginning of the phase of

    renunciation of material values

    while adopting spiritual life with

the goal of realizing the ultimate

    truth as the culmination of

    human life. Vanaprastha

Ashrams objective is to serve as

a catalyst in the quest for truth.

    While basking in the spiritual

    environment, the Vanaprasthis

can pass on the legacy of their

priceless experience to theyounger generations in a

    symbiotic environment. The

    members join the Ashram with

Individual identities, live as a part of the

Ashram and during the process assimilate

greater goals of the Organization. This

elevation from mundane desires to noble

motives of life will be a natural

    transformation in Vanaprastha Ashram.

Vanaprastha Ashram is going to be

    a wing of Nachiketa Tapovan

    Ashram located in Kodgal village

near Jadcherla. Like all the other

    services rendered by Tapovan,

Vanaprastha living will be free of

    charge. Donations by well wishers

    are welcome. Initially the

    Vanaprasthis will be using the

    Resident Quarters that have

    reached completion. Vanaprasthis

    will receive free accommodation,

free food, some medical aid andplenty of opportunities and

    guidance to pursue spiritual

interests. As a part of Karma yoga

they can take active part in the ongoing

programs and activities at Tapovan Ashram

by sharing their knowledge, hobbies and skills.

During their stay in the Ashram Vanaprasthis

    are expected to be economically

    self-sufficient and prudent.

If you do not care for pleasure, you

will not be afraid of pain.11

All souls are playing, some consciously, some

unconsciously. Religion is learning to play consciously.

We are what our Karma is. The Almighty

has immensely blessed us by giving us

the sensibility to be able to distinguish

between bad Karma and good karma.

    However, sometimes thoughts that

enter our mind make us dissuade us from

our righteous path.Thoughts just come and go. A normal

human finds it difficult to have control

over them. Most youth have negative

    thoughts whirling around their mind

    my friend shouldnt toptheclass, my

    colleague shouldnt be applauded.

Such thoughts can later make one feel

guilty of being a wicked human. After

all, its not easy to escape ones

    conscience.

So the question that arises is how do we

keep ourselves protected from such evil

thoughts? There is a small experiment

which I did (as I also am among those

normal youth who go through such

problems) and would like to share with

    you all.

Everyday I used to once ask the

Almighty to make my mind immune to

    inhumanly thoughts entering me. I

requested HIM to make me a betterperson. And surprisingly it worked!

This eventually has helped me discover

a secret anytime when you have the

opportunity to ask the Almighty for

something, quickly plead for things that

the world cannot give. Worldly things

    come, sooner or later; more or less;

but your inner peace can come only

when your heart is free of guilt and

this is achieved only if the mind is free

    of harmful thoughts.

    Om Namah Shivaya!

    MIND v/s HEART

-by SUHANIby SUHANIby SUHANIby SUHANIby SUHANI

10 Bhakti yoga is the science of higher love.

Kena Upanishad begins with the word

Kena(means by whom) and hence the name.

It is also known as Talavakaara Upanishad

as it forms a part of Talavakaara Brahmana

of Sama Veda. This Upanishad like all the

others teaches the oneness of the Individual

    Consciousness with the Universal

    Consciousness.

The first two chapters in the form of a

dialogue between the disciple and his

preceptor reveal that Brahman is beyond the

comprehension of the sense organs. Mind is

an inert but a transparent material entity

through which the light of pure consciousness

reflects to reveal the objects. Therefore by

    meditating upon Brahman as Pure

Intelligence, It can be realized in this very

    life.

The third and fourth chapters in the form of

a story illustrate that the Brahman is beyond

realization by finite senses without the grace

of Brahman Himself. Once in a battle

between Gods and Demons, by the power of

Brahman, Gods triumphed. But the Gods,

accredited themselves for the victory and

became elated. Brahman who wanted to

make this clear to Gods, appeared before

them, but they failed to recognize Him. Vayu

and Agni approached Him to learn who He

was but did not succeed. Finally Indra

approached Him when the Spirit vanished

and The Golden Goddess Uma took His

place. Goddess Uma taught Indra that they

were only instruments while the Supreme

Lords power and Grace were the reason

behind the victory. This revelation earned

Indra, Vayu and Agni the importance among

    the Gods.

In this story Indra symbolizes the I-

    Consciousness, the other Gods symbolize

the forces that control each sense organ

and demons mans evil passions. Story

conveys that at times when the senses

overcome a passion and get a glimpse of

the Atman, the human being feels proud

that he understood the Atman completely.

Each sense organ thinks that it knows the

whole of Brahman and rejoices that it can

control the mans activity. Later when they

realize the limitations of their power, Indra

or the individual soul, all humbled down

steps forward to learn the truth. To him

appears the Golden Goddess Uma who

stands for the Grace or Shakti of Brahman,

destroys the notions of senses and ego and

reveals the truth of Brahman. Thus the

    aspirant attains the Supreme Knowledge.

The message is that until the evil passions

(vasanas) are subdued and the ego

( Ahamkara) is destroyed, one cannot get

even a glimpse of the indwelling Atman.
