Jim Campbell serves as litigation staff counsel with the Alliance Defense Fund at its headquarters in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he plays a key role with the marriage litigation team.

Since joining ADF in 2007, Campbell has been involved in litigating cases pertaining to same-sex “marriage,” religious liberty, and freedom of conscience. He authored an amicus brief in successful defense of the Wisconsin marriage amendment in McConkey v. Doyle, and is part of the legal team defending California’s marriage amendment (Proposition 8) from legal challenge. Campbell also provides legal presentations to municipal legislative bodies, community groups, and collegiate organizations.

Campbell earned his J.D. from the University of Akron School of Law, where he graduated summa cum laude in 2006. While there, he was an

associate editor for the Akron Law Review, participated on the moot court board, and interned for the Honorable James Gwin (Northern District of Ohio) and Deborah Cook (U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit). After graduating, Campbell served under the Honorable Alice M. Batchelder of the Sixth Circuit in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he participated in cases involving federal constitutional and criminal issues, as well as death penalty appeals and other facets of federal law. He worked on the ACLU v. NSAlitigation, a case in which the ACLU brought an unsuccessful constitutional challenge against President George W. Bush’s terrorist-surveillance wiretapping program. In 2003, Campbell graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Finance from Grove City College in western Pennsylvania, where he earned the distinction of “Wall Street Journal Business Student of the Year.”

Campbell is admitted to the bar in the states of Ohio and Arizona, along with federal bars including the Northern District of Ohio and the U.S. Courts of Appeal for the Sixth, Ninth, and Eleventh Circuits. He currently resides in Mesa, Arizona, with his wife, who is an attorney employed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Published articles by Campbell include “Newdow Calls for a New Day in Establishment Clause Jurisprudence” which appeared in the Akron Law Review. He enjoys theology, classic literature, and history. Campbell also loves country music and Cleveland sports teams. He ran the “Big D” Dallas Marathon in 2007.
