Upcoming Chair Election

Note that the chair position for the community will be up for election this year, so if you have an interest in that

position, please let me know and I would be happy to chat with you about it.

Goals & Projects:

“The purpose of NACADA's Technology in Advising Commission is to help academic advisors, faculty advisors, and

advising administrators understand the impact of using technologies in advising.” That statement is the guiding force

Page 4: NACADA - Technology in Advising Community Meetingapps.nacada.ksu.edu/conferences/ProposalsPHP/... · Turn our poster into a “take on me” style photo booth with cutouts props Sign

behind the projects and goals below. The following are frameworks for the projects and goals of the NACADA

Technology in Advising Community. The consistent formats are meant to guide progress and collaboration from our

membership as we pursue both our short term and long term goals. Several goals may include multiple projects. We

may revise, drop, or add goals as necessary. To volunteer, send project updates, or request collaborative projects,

please contact John Sauter, Chair of the Technology in Advising Community (2017-2019) at [email protected].

Outcome 1: Technology Labs for the Annual Conference As you can see from the above list, we have developed a lot of momentum in regard to the technology labs. Sarah

Howard has done a great job and we hope to continue to offer these in the future

Achievements:

● 12 tech lab presentations in Phoenix

● Funding for a room so we aren’t in a hallway this year.

Potential Areas of growth & Involvement:

● Encouraging attendance to the tech labs.

● Encouraging more members to submit hands-on tech presentations

● Converting tech labs into virtual offerings after the conference

● Supporting the tech labs at the conference (attendance & general tech troubleshooting)

● Combining the tech Labs with creativity based Labs. Great suggestion from Sarah Maddox following the

#saproart session. This could possibly raise the profile of the labs.

Outcome 2: Promote Communication, Involvement & Collaboration With Members This is a key area that needs some focus and adjustment, especially as it relates to sustainable leadership. It is

difficult to connect with all our members shared google docs, (membership list (delayed emails), list-serve (not

everyone uses this), facebook group (please join),

Achievements:

● Lots of great conversations happening at annual conference but how do we sustain them year round.

● Shared google docs (overviews like this one, collaborative project pages, updates & goals, etc…

● Collaboration directory (partial success, (need for a broader approach & engagement) Technology in Advising

Collaboration Directory: http://bit.ly/AdvTechDirectory

○ How to join the directory: http://bit.ly/NACADAAdvTechForm ● Transition of @AcadvChat leadership to Sarah Howard and continued support from moderators

○ @AcAdvChat: https://twitter.com/acadvchat ○ #AcAdv: https://twitter.com/hashtag/acadv?f=tweets&vertical=default&src=hash ○ Wordpress / Archive: https://acadvchat.wordpress.com/

Page 5: NACADA - Technology in Advising Community Meetingapps.nacada.ksu.edu/conferences/ProposalsPHP/... · Turn our poster into a “take on me” style photo booth with cutouts props Sign

Potential Areas of growth & Involvement:

● Shared models of communication ( steering committee & team based approaches that don’t rely only on the

chair )

● Sign in model - replacing the collaborative directory

● Encouraging membership (new & continuing members)

● Revisit & optimize the structure of the steering committee

● Feedback: Let us know how we can better communicate

● Online Zoom Town Hall Meeting OR Google Docs shared files.

Outcome 3: Goal: Collaborative Consultation With Other Advising Communities By collaborative consultation, we mean to draw upon our members who have experience and training in technology related areas, to provide consultation, strategies, recommendations, and guidance via Zoom, shared documents/resources, or other means. As needed a team of volunteers will be formed to provide support to the projects outlined by the other advising communities. However, collaborative consultation does not mean completing or staffing projects for other advising communities. While some of our members may choose to participate more out of their own interest, or as members of both commissions, the goal is to provide ideas and guidance to help them reach the next level

Achievements:

● Canadian Advising Community - Support was given to support the CAC’s new webinars

● Identification of potential partnerships

○ Canadian Advising Community - Continued involvement & support

○ LGBTQA Community - Support and consultation best practices needed to assist them in revising their

website

○ Region 1 - I planted the seed of offering a virtual conference and they are interested in the

possibility.

○ Distance Education - several of their projects overlap with our goals and member interests

○ Orientation Advising - TBD

○ Professional Development - TBD

○ Students with Disabilities - Webinar & Virtual offerings

Page 6: NACADA - Technology in Advising Community Meetingapps.nacada.ksu.edu/conferences/ProposalsPHP/... · Turn our poster into a “take on me” style photo booth with cutouts props Sign

○ HBCU -

Potential Areas of growth & Involvement:

● Identifying potential needs of advising communities & NACADA

● Coordinating and setting up teams to address these from our membership

Outcome 4: Work on Increasing Advising Technology Related Resources, Writing, &

Research Identify, Encourage & Support Research Associated with Technology in Advising

Achievements:

● Technology in Advising Handout - 1 page overview developed for NACADA

● Identification of some research projects currently in the works

Potential Areas of growth & Involvement:

● Need to develop a support network where our members can talk to

● Need to develop a list of opportunities to write & support resources

● Technology in Advising Pocket Guide (focus on global issues, rather than specific technologies)

● Examine the current resources of NACADA and the Technology In Advising Community to figure out what do

we need to develop (outdated materials, fallow sites, new needs, etc…)

Outcome 5: Lay the Groundwork for More Virtual Offerings, Technology in Advising

Conferences & Virtual Offerings Identify opportunities for increased online and virtual offerings for NACADA

Achievements:

● Support for the Canadian Advising Communities Webinars

Potential Areas of growth & Involvement:

● Virtual offerings - Brown Bags, Trainings, Videos, webinars etc...

● Explore the possibility of offering a Technology in Advising Virtual Conference (Zoom, etc…)

○ Region 1 is interested in this idea

● Support the development of a NACADA Podcast

○ Brian K, Kevan Hayden, etc...
