PAST PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Loretta Krause

It is my pleasure to congratulate Truc Nguyen, our Foundations Representative, for beingselected by PDK International as a participant in their Emerging Leaders Program. This isa first for the Hawaii Chapter. Only 24 members in the nation were selected to participate.Truc just returned from the PDK national convention with a renewed commitment to sharea leadership role in PDK Hawaii.

In my final report as PDK Chapter President, I summarized 10 major activities that wereinitiated last year. Let’s see how well we have done so far this year!

1. The PDK newsletter in now firmly established as an on-line publication. The creditlargely goes to former member Bao Le, who created our PDK/Hawaii website, where thenewsletters are now published on-line.

2. The rewritten chapter by-laws have been approved by PDK International.

3. The Peace Gardens Program sponsored by PDK Hawaii is expanding and working with other interestededucational and community partners.

4. The Board of Directors reviewed the chapter structure. After much discussion, it was recommended that theUniversity chapter become a state chapter. The members voted to approve the change. PDK International said thatmany small states with only one chapter are moving in this direction due to a more varied membership. PDKInternational has indicated they will approve our application to become a state chapter.

5. It was voted by the membership to establish a $10,000 scholarship endowment fund, sponsored by the PDKHawaii chapter. This is a new program sponsored by PDK International. The local chapter must raise $2,000 a yearfor a period of 5 years.

I have offered to donate $1,000 to the scholarship fund this year if we can raise a matching amount from thePDK/Hawaii membership.

John Southworth has just pledged $200 a year for 5 years. We only need 9 MORE MEMBERS to do the same andwe will get a bonus from PDK International of $2,000 for our scholarship fund. However, any amount you candonate will be greatly appreciated. More specific information is elsewhere is this newsletter. WE HAVE UNTILJULY 1, 2011 TO GET THE FIRST $2,000 OR MORE, SO LET’S GET STARTED! WHO WILL MATCHJOHN'S EXAMPLE?

6. We continue to encourage high school students to participate in the Prospective Educators Scholarship Program.

7. The review of the over-all PDK chapter as a state organization is progressing.

8. The Peace Gardens Program will continue to be sponsored next year by PDK Hawaii under the able directionof Aaron Levine of the College of Education.

9. PDK Hawaii is opening discussions with Pi Lambda Theta to provide closer cooperation between our twoorganizations now that they have joined forces with PDK International.

10. Exploring ways to help begin a PDK chapter in Vietnam will not continue at this time.

All in all, it looks like PDK Hawaii has gotten off to the good start this year. Please help donate to our newscholarship fund so we can help more undergraduate and graduate students become teachers.

Welcome, Pi Lambda Theta! by Miki K. Tomita

Last fall, Phi Delta Kappa International officiallywelcomed both Pi Lambda Theta (PLT) and FutureEducators of America (FEA) into our family. Together, all three organizations hope to support the widest range ofeducators possible – starting with FEA for K-12prospective educators, continuing with PLT for pre-service and in-service teachers, and culminating withPDK, our prestigious professional association. Here inHawai‘i, there exist several institutions that support a PLTprogram. Two in particular have been in regular contactwith our PDK President and Membership Chair since thepartnership began – Christine Putzulu of University ofHawai‘i Beta Zeta Chapter, and David Kaneakua of theHawai‘i Chapter (left at right of Miki in the photo). Both of these chapters demonstrate strong membership, andplay active roles in supporting the many needs of various educational communities. We are continuing ourconversations on ways to complement and perhaps combine our resources in the future. As for FEA, we are justbeginning anew our explorations of how to support future educators in Hawaii’s K-12 environments. Stay tuned– or better yet, join the effort! For more information on how to help support our new partnership with PLT, or onhelping to develop an FEA program for Hawai‘i, please contact Miki Tomita at [email protected].

Hawai‘i School Peace Gardens Report By Aaron J. Levine, Chair

Phi Delta Kappa Hawai‘i School Peace Garden (PDK HSPG) had a fruitful Spring 2011 semester. Committeemembers Julia Morton-Marr (founder of the International School Peace Gardens), John Thatcher (Principal,Connections PCS), Miki Tomita (President, PDK Hawai‘i and Teacher, Education Laboratory School), KenyonTam (Administrative Assistant, Hawaii Charter Schools Administrative Office), and Aaron Levine (Chair, PDKHSPG and Partnership and Placement Coordinator, UHM College of Education) invited school and educationalorganizations to several forums to discuss ideas for supporting schools in their integration of peace andsustainability education throughout the curriculum. Discussions included an overview how a School Peace Gardencan help to galvanize the entire school community toward building a curriculum with peace and sustainability atits core. Partners from the Hawai‘i School Gardens Hui, a network of educators dedicated to the development ofschool gardens throughout the state, Kokua Foundation educators Lydi Morgan Bernal and others, and scienceeducator Dr. Tara O’Neill, met with committee members to share experiences and discuss opportunities for furthercollaboration. PDK HSPG also participated in the recent Climate Change Gathering held at the East-West Centerand spearheaded by Maya Soetoro-Ng. Participants shared their successes and challenges with designing andimplementing curriculum to address climate change issues.

Hawai‘i School Gardens Hui can be seen at their website:(http://web.me.com/kokuahawaii/HSGHui/Hawaii_School_Garden_Hui.html).

PDK HSPG devoted considerable effort in developing our partnership with the Education Laboratory School andU.H. Manoa Children’s Center. The committee worked with high school liaison Miki Tomita, elementary schoolliaison Laurie Faure, and Children’s Center liaison Lani Au to share Peace Garden initiatives underway at all threesites and explore exciting opportunities for PK-12 collaboration. To date, the high school and elementary schoolhave dedicated a Path of Peace between the two school sites, and it appears that this path will now expand to include

the Children’s Center. PDK HSPG hopes that the Education Laboratory School and Children’s Center sites willserve as a model “lighthouse school” for other schools interested in developing peace and sustainability education.

As we did in 2010, PDK HSPG will be planning a Fall 2011 Hawai‘i School Peace Gardens workshop. Our goalis to bring back last year’s participants to share successes and challenges, and include new participants who areworking to integrate peace and sustainability education across the P-20 curriculum. To find out more about SchoolPeace Gardens, please visit the International School Peace Gardens at ihtec.org. Mahalo nui loa to the PDK HSPGcommittee and all our participating partners in their commitment to this essential work. We are always looking fornew PDK Hawai‘i members to join our committee. Please contact Aaron Levine if you would like to get involved([email protected]).

PDK/HAWAII AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIP NEWS By Thanh Truc T. Nguyen

Willis B. Coale Scholarship

Each year, the PDK/Hawaii Chapter 0067 offers a scholarship in honor of WillisB. Coale to a graduate student in the field of education to further service, researchand leadership in education. This year, we are very proud to award the Willis B.Coale scholarship to Greg Uchishiba.

Greg is an English Language Learner (ELL) resource teacher in the LeewardDistrict. He is committed to making an impact in public education for K-12 secondlanguage learners. His experience living and teaching English in Japan for twoyears developed in him an empathy for the struggles of ELL students whenlearning a second language and trying to survive in a new culture. Greg hasdeveloped a particular interest in pedagogical and research issues in teachingreading and writing to second language learners so that he can help improve theway teachers instruct ELL students, and is currently pursuing his doctorate ineducation.

One of Greg’s research interests is in looking at different methods for teaching and assessing reading and writingto second language learners. He posits that the current Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol model, thoughit meets No Child Left Behind’s scientifically-based research criteria and provides teachers with general ELLstrategies, may not be enough to edify teachers on how to teach specific content areas such as reading and writingto second language learners. In another inquiry, Greg is driven to analyze ELL dropout rates in high schools. Gregis motivated by a 2002 New York report that revealed 31% of ELLs dropped out and a 2001 Canadian report thatfound their cumulative ELL drop out rate to be 74%. His goal is to investigate reasons why Hawai‘i high schoolELL students drop out and how to improve those graduation rates. In a third related inquiry, Greg wants to examineELL elementary student data of those who have excited the ELL program in Hawai‘i and look at trends and possiblecauses why some are progressing in language proficiency at a slower rate.

Greg constantly reflects on how he can improve personally to ultimately do a better job for Hawai‘i's ELL students, teachers, and administrators during his after-work hours. He is described as determined, compassionate, knowledgeable, and a trustworthy. His dedication to the youth of Hawai‘i is admirable. PDK-Hawaii is honoredto name Greg our Willis B. Coale Scholarship Recipient.

The next Willis B. Coale Scholarship deadline is May 1, 2011.

See www.hawaii.edu/pdknews/scholarship_Coale.html for more information.

PDK/Hawaii’s Emerging Leader

On September 7, 2010, our own Foundations and Scholarship Representative Thanh Truc Nguyen was recognizedas an Emerging Leader by PDK International. “Honoring these young leaders is one of PDK’s most importantinitiatives,” said William J. Bushaw, PDK International’s executive director. “We know the future of education isin good hands with leaders like these making a difference in the lives of our students.”

Truc has combined her science background with her knowledge of educational technologies to develop, create, andmaintain programs and curricula that are integrated with technology. In addition to authoring and teaching scienceand computer literacy courses, Truc has developed instructional strategies that include electronic enhancements forexisting science curricula; overseen the development of science, economics, and computer distance-learningcourses; created websites; developed evaluation and assessment modules; and coordinated conferences andprofessional development workshops related to her expertise.

In February 2011, Truc attended the 2011 PDK International Conference in Atlanta, Georgia where she wasintroduced to other inspirational emerging leaders, heard their stories of amazing efforts in their hometowns andstates, and chatted with the passionate executive team of PDK International. The highlight of her conferenceexperience was the chance to talk one-on-one with Yong Zhao, keynote speaker for the conference who sheconsiders to be a transformative leader and eminent speaker. At the end of the conference, Truc was just as giddyas the thousands of young members of the Future Educators Association while waiting for Bill Nye to take the stage.

Asked by PDK International to write a short, third-person biography about herself, she wrote the following: “Truc(pronounced by her preschool teacher and therefore forever more like “truck”) is a first generation Vietnamese-American who chose to pursue her career as a professional educator because of her firm belief that education makesa difference. She is driven by the desire to equip all learners with the knowledge to understand and accept their owndigital citizenship. She firmly believes digital citizenship is a key component of enabling students to become globalthinkers and contributors. She wishes to thank PDK International for the recognition in the Emerging Leadersprogram and for supporting young leaders around the world. She thanks her brothers for their support andapologizes for their need to say, “She’s still in school” well into her 30s; and Rich for his unwavering belief andchallenging her to strive towards personal excellence. Truc especially thanks her mom for her strength, her humor, and her resilience during thathelicopter ride more than 30years ago that changed her lifefor the better.”
