INTRODUCTIONINTRODUCTION A computer virus is:• a computer program that can copy itself and infect

a computer without permission or knowledge of the user.

• sometimes confused with computer worms and Trojan horses

• may also take advantage of network services such as the World Wide Web ,e-mail, and file sharing system to spread ,blurring the line between viruses and worms

• can create problems for the computer user and take up computer memory used by legitimate programs

ETYMOLOGY• The term “virus” was first used in an academic

publication by Fred Cohen in 1984

CLASSIFICATION• Viruses can be subdivided into a number of types

based on their features:

6. MACRO VIRUSES -written for programs such as Word and Excel -examples are Relax,Melissa A, and Bablas.

1. NETWORK VIRUSES -quickly spreading across a Local Area Connection

(LAN) or even over the Internet -most notorious network viruses are Ninda and SQL

Slammer4. LOGIC BOMB -employs code that lies inert until specific condition

are met -examples is “Friday the 13th” virus7. CROSS-SITE SCRIPTING VIRUS (XSSV) -a type of virus that untilizes cross-site scripting

HISTORY

• The first computer virus is “Elk Cloner” that has written in 982 by Rich Skventa and it attached itself to the Apple DOS operating system and spread by floppy disc

• First PC virus was a boot sector virus called Brain, created in 1986 by 2 bothers, Brasit and Amjad Farooq Alvi named Ashar virus

WHY PEOPLE CREATE COMPUTER VIRUSES?

• Viruses have been written as reserch projects, pranks, vandalism, to attack the product of the specific companies, to distribute political message and financial gain from identify theft,spyware, and crytoviral extortion.Some viruses were intended ‘good viruses’ spread improvement to the programs they infect or delete other viruses.

CONCLUSION

• COMPUTER VIRUS CAN DAMAGE OUR COMPUTER SYSTEM.THAT IS IMPORTANT FOR USER TO INSTALL THE ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM IN THEIR PERSONAL COMPUTER.

• USER SOMETIME CONFUSED WITH COMPUTER WORM AND TROJAN HORSES.
