Editor's Notes

By the time you read this, we'll have moved. Fanshawe is increasing its enrollment this year and larger classrooms are needed. As well, the newly developed Alumni Fund project means that the Alumni Office will have eleven more people - letter stuffers, telephone callers and a supervisor. We'll be easy to find - across the hall from our old office in B Building, Oxford Street campus. Send mail to the same address, but the room number is now B1051. All our phone numbers stay the same.

During the last couple of years the college has successfully raised nearly $5 million for scholarships, books and equipment, and a community fitness centre. Starting this fall, the College and the Alumni Association will be asking you to support Fanshawe and its students. Various articles in this edition of Alumni Fanshawe will give you some background on the college's fundraising efforts.

Check out the "Call for Proposals" for vehicle rentals, hotel accommodation and long-distance rates for alumni. If you know of anyone offering these services, please pass the word. There's also a survey on other services you might like.

Many readers responded to our "Special Events Survey" in the Spring 1994 edition. That survey asked alumni to tell us what events they want more information about If you're interested in getting our special mailings, call the Alumni Office at 519-452-4285 or 800-661-ALUM. Letter to the Editor

Dear Sirs: Since my graduation in 1971-3

(I'm not exactly sure), I have seen perhaps 2 Alumni Newsletters. These two I have enjoyed greatly, familiar faces, new activities etc. I want to see more.

I should mention the last newsletter was sent to my parents' address (haven't lived there for twenty years!) in Woodstock, redirected to Florida (have never lived there!), and then redirected back to Woodstock where yesterday it was hand delivered to me. Nice going guys ... at least you are persistent.

I realize it's not your fault I've not been receiving the newsletters, it's mine ... but my point is you have been persistent and regular in your mailings and eventually I've crossed your path. For all those grads you still haven't found, don't stop trying, and thank you for being persistent.

Regards,

Betty Anne Thomas - 1994 Honorary Diploma winner

In recognition of her outstanding service to the Fanshawe College community, Betty Anne (Fisher) Thomas (General Arts and Science 78/Medical Laboratory Technology 81) was awarded the 1994 Honorary Diploma at the graduation ceremonies in June.

From the beginning of her career, Betty Anne was actively interested in preventative health care and upon graduation became actively involved with the establishment of the AIDS Committee of London (ACOL).

Photo by John Sing Her single-minded approach to

AIDS and the lack of support services lead to her appointment as the first Executive Director of ACOL. Since then, under her leadership, ACOL has become the major AIDS organi1.ation in London. Along with this work, she organized and worked on the establishment of the John Gordon Home, an AIDS hostel in London, which provides help and support for patients in the terminal stages of AIDS. Ms. Thomas has been in the forefront of AIDS education and support locally, provincially, and nationally.

Linn Marron-Marshall It was Fanshawe's unique

program in Construction Engineering TechnologyManagement that made it possible for Linn Marron-Marshall to fulfil her long-held dream of working in construction.

Ever since she was 14 and a convent student in her native Ireland, Linn had wanted to pursue a career in quantity surveying, the specialty of construction cost planning. " I liked the math, and I wanted a career outside an office. I didn't want to be stuck at a desk."

But it wasn't until she had emigrated to Canada with her husband and spent several years as a nurse that she was able to pursue her dream. In 1979 Fanshawe was the only community college in Canada where students could take courses in quantity surveying that would enable them to become full members of the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors.

Linn won the President's Prize upon graduation in 1982, and soon after formed her construction management consulting firm specializing in quantity surveying. Her business, Marshall-Murray Inc., has offices in Ottawa, Toronto and London, and provides consulting services to some of the largest construction projects in Ontario.

As well as being actively involved in her profession as past president of the Ontario and Canadian Institutes of Quantity Surveying and past chair of the Ontario Association of Consulting Quantity Surveying, Linn has served as past president of the Fanshawe Association of Construction Technologists and member of the Programme Cluster Advisory Committee. She has also found time to return to Fanshawe as a guest speaker at this spring's convocation ceremonies.

She's surprised that such small

numbers of women enter the field she has found so rewarding. Marron-Marshall was one of only two women in her class of 60 students, and the ratio has not changed much since. The key to changing that, she says, is to spark the interest of girls in the elementary grades.

STUBASE eases student job hunt For years Fanshawe's Co

operative Education and Career Services Department handled job requests manually. New computer equipment and software has helped start the trend towards automation. Barry McGill, manager of the department, says that when the federal government removed their staff from the college in 1990, they agreed to supply Fanshawe with new technology as compensation.

Information on employers had been stored in binders, job postings were advertised on the job boards and students read the job descriptions in the binders. It was a lot of paper for students to shuffle, so Grant Calsbck, Steve Hesser, and Bruce Weagle (Computer Programmer 94) developed a software package called STUBASE as a class project STUBASE is a database for employment information. Users check job postings in Career Services as well as the national job bank. Information (updated daily) includes: job title, location, salary range, contact names, and information on the position.

Students can get information on paper or disk and the department can track employers and jobs.

Creating STUBASE gave Grant, Steve and Bruce a chance to test class work and use their initiative to solve problems. They invested over 3000 hours while maintaining "A" averages. They credit Fanshawe faculty Jim Cooper

Barbara Fanson - Doing it by the Book

"Just remember, you're here to study graphic design, not to do student newspapers," professor Ilbert Walker warned Barbara Fanson (Graphic Design 81).

Barbara now has 15 years of experience in desktop publishing and graphics. The Toronto resident is author of Producing a First

Class Newsletter, published by Self-Counsel Press. "As communicators, we want to design something that is appealing and attractive that people will want to read, and secondly, to help them read it Newsletters introduce and promote new products or services, demonstrate product uses, describe the company, products and personnel and show benefits to using them. An effective promotional newsletter should raise the readers' level of awareness. No company or organization can afford to publish a piece that isn't read."

Barbara has written several other books, manuals and articles on

desktop publishing and is very active in home-based business associations. She also offers seminars on newsletter writing, Macintosh computer training, print production and typography - Seneca College is her biggest client (she teaches all their Macintosh courses). "When somebody asks me how I'm qualified to teach, I tell them I went to Fanshawe and have a three-year diploma!" Her latest project is developing training videos.

Barbara looks back on cooperative work experience at the London Free Press, a Guelph print shop and with the student newspaper, Interrobang. "I liked the co-op part the best - the wide range of practical work experience contributed to the broad skill base. I learned the most here. The instructors taught me what not to do!

"Even though I don't get to London very often, it's still like an old friend. Hi to Ilbert, and John

Young - I learned a lot from the Beatles film festival and all the other promotions I did for him. When you asked me about Fanshawe, I thought - Kraft dinner was 5 for a buck then - and now Ihate it!"

Fanshawe Community Fitness Centre

Fanshawe College believes in encouraging healthy competition and promoting teamwork through its recreation and fitness programs. With continuing budget constraints, the College has, so far, been unable to upgrade its existing facilities or construct new ones. But starting this August, Fanshawe began building a new Community Fitness Centre at the Oxford Street campus. This facility will provide two regulation gyms, which combine to one gym with bleacher seating for 500, a fitness centre and testing centre, a sports injury clinic, three squash courts and a student medical centre. The 44,000

square-foot facility is two storeys tall. The Centre will be used by Fanshawe College athletes, students, staff, and alumni, and by various sports and recreation groups from the community.

Funding has been raised through Fanshawe's Building Our Future capital campaign, with contributions from students, staff, the City of London, corporations and interested groups and individuals. It's estimated that the new Community Fitness Centre will cost $4. 317 million, of which $3 million is being raised through the Fanshawe community.

There are many advantages to Fanshawe College and the community. Athletes, students, staff and alumni will have access to better gym facilities and a well-equipped fitness centre at a reasonable cost. London citizens from toddlers to seniors will be able to participate in a wide variety of programmed activities. Community athletics groups - wheelchair basketball, gymnastics groups, archery associations, indoor soccer, youth basketball camps - will be able to use much-needed gym space for their activities.

Companies in the area will work with Fanshawe College to develop recreation and wellness programs for their employees. Often this will be done using the fitness testing centre and the fitness facilities.

Play-off court facilities (volleyball, basketball) are in demand. Many organizations will be able to use Fanshawe facilities to hold local, provincial and national tournaments and play-offs for their members.

The construction of the Fanshawe College Community Fitness Centre will provide 25-personyears of work for the London community.

Fanshawe College's economic impact on the London community is approximately $200 million annually. The economic impact of the construction of the Community Fitness Centre will be $8. 1 million.

Fanshawe College Alumni Fund - Making a Difference

Do you ever think back to your first experiences asa Fanshawe student? Remember those feelings of apprehension and great anticipation on embarking on a new phase of your life, culminating in a strong sense of accomplishment upon graduation.

Well, you weren't alone then, and you're not now. As a graduate, you have joined a cast of thousands from all walks of life who chose Fanshawe College as the first step of the journey forward. Like most people, you sought out an institution that would provide you with a quality education and positive experiences that would help you reach your destination. Many students, both today and in the future, will follow your lead and as a graduate, Fanshawe hopes you will help tomorrow's generations realize their dreams through a new initiative, the Alumni Fund.

The Fund, a comprehensive fundraising effort, is the first of its kind on a such wide scale in the college system in Canada and will be launched this fall. Its objective is to support several capital projects, including a equipment, library resources, a new Community Fitness Centre, and scholarships and awards,. identified as essential to maintaining Fanshawe's position as a leader in the community college system. The various projects will ensure Fanshawe students are provided with the excellent education they deserve.

Fanshawe College has always been committed to providing skilled graduates capable of delivering the level of performance demanded by business and

industry. And Fanshawe alumni are testimony to this commitment.

"Fanshawe College is an important component in all alumni's lives. The Alumni Fund will provide an opportunity for them to ensure future generations benefit from a quality education at Fanshawe," says College President, Barry Moore.

Over the coming months, the College will share details of the Fund with you and provide you with an opportunity to reflect on your days at College. It will give you the chance to bring yourself up-to-date with what's been happening at Fanshawe and what's planned for the future. Think of it as a homecoming of sorts, no matter how near or far you've travelled since you were at Fanshawe.

While you're walking down memory lane, take a moment to think of the students who are eager to trod the familiar path to Fanshawe: those who share similar dreams and aspirations to the ones you held all those months or years ago. Your participation in the Alumni Fund will provide them with the same privileges you enjoyed - a quality education and enjoyable experience.

You have the opportunity now to express your appreciation for the excellent education you received at Fanshawe College and invest in the dreams of future generations of students. Together, we can make a difference. Watch for further details.

Planning for the Future - Your Will

Your will may be the most important document you ever sign. Last year, one out of every two Canadian who died were intestate - that is, they did not have a will. In such cases, a provincial court appoints an administrator to distribute the estate; this delays the process and creates further expenses to be deducted from the estate.

In Ontario, if you should die without a will, the first $75,000 of your estate will pass to your spouse. Of the balance, a further one third is returned to the spouse and two thirds is divided equally among your children. If there are no remaining beneficiaries, your estate becomes the property of the Province.

Start planning now to avoid unnecessary strain on your family.

And you may want to remember your favourite

charities in your will. Fanshawe has been the significant recipient of two bequests in the past few years. These bequests were specific - they were endowments to give financial support to students in specific programs.

If you (or your parents) wish to remember Fanshawe College in your will, we would be happy to help you. We can pass to you some sample wordings for your will and we may be able to assist you in directing your bequest to areas that interest you. Please call Barbara Belt>eck, Manager, Resource Development and Alumni, Fanshawe College at (519) 452-4466.

Building Our Future - A Capital Idea!

In the fall of 1990, it began as a dream. For the first time in its history, Fanshawe launched a special capital fundraising campaign, "Building Our Future", to enable the College to continue its vital and integral role in servicing the needs of southwestern Ontario. Four years later, the realiuttion of the campaign's $5 million goal is well within reach.

In recent years, Ontario's economy and labour market has undergone rapid transformation in the face of economic, technological, social, cultural and environmental changes. "Fanshawe College continually re-evaluates what it is doing with a view to making it better. I believe that there is no other educational institution as well prepared as Fanshawe to move ahead," says Barry Moore, President of Fanshawe College. This is reflected in the priorities identified by the College's Board of Governors and President to be funded through the campaign:

Equipment and Library Resources - $1.5 million In order to keep pace with changing technology, Fanshawe must modernize or replace much of its equipment College-wide. New microcomputer facilities for CAD/CAM, CIM, word processing, and general computer support for data entry and analysis from student experiments are essential. The College has also identified a number of instructional equipment needs pertinent to key areas. The library must continually update study and reference resources. As well, computer equipment and related CD-ROM technology for reference materials are critical if the library is to provide online accessibility to its students and public.

Community Fitness Centre - $3 million The construction of a community fitness centre will greatly enhance the College's ability to serve its students' instructional and recreational needs, and provide added community resources for London residents. For further details, please refer to page 7 of this issue.

Scholarships and Awards - $500,000 To encourage young people to pursue careers in vital areas such as technology, health and human sciences, business and the applied arts, the College plans to establish an Endowment Fund to provide annual entrance level scholarships in key fields, as well as bursaries to provide assistance to needy students on a continuing basis.

Campaign Chair, Don Smith, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Ellis-Don Construction Limited and a long-time supporter of Fanshawe College, believes Fanshawe students are deserving of the quality facilities, equipment and awards the campaign will provide. "People are the greatest resource that we have in any community and if we are to accomplish anything, we have to develop, educate and train our own people so they can compete with the best"

Since its inception, the campaign has been generously supported by members of the community, including corporations, foundations, individuals, faculty and staff, students, alumni and friends. Several key projects have been funded wholly, or in large part, by prominent organizations:

A $250,000 donation from the Richard Ivey Foundation launched the Environmental Engineering Technician - Waste Management program at the Woodstock campus.

The City of London has pledged $1 million towards the construction of the new Community Fitness Centre.

A $250,000 grant from the Richard and Jean Ivey Fund provided upgrades to the College's Oxford Street campus library.

A $340,000 donation from Digital Equipment Canada established a 30-station state-of-the-art office automation laboratory.

The "Building Our Future" Capital Campaign provides donors with an opportunity to ensure their investment benefits students, both now and in the years to come. With one year left of the five year term set for the campaign, more than $4.5 million has already been raised. The $5 million dream will soon become a reality.

Social Service Worker Alumni Dear Fellow College Alumni:

I am sending this letter on behalf of the Ontario Social Service Workers Association (OSSW A). We are an association representing Social Service Workers and their interests. We are currently attempting to reach out to fellow Social Service Worker graduates across Ontario in the hopes of increasing our membership.

The Ontario Social Service Workers Association was formed in 1987 by several SSW's concerned about the threat of legislation governing the Social Work profession and the possible exclusion of Social Service Worker graduates from working in the field. Today membership in OSSW A offers opportunities for networking with fellow Social Service Workers; workshops on topics of interest to persons in the social service field; updates on "Project Legislation" as new information becomes available; and four (4) newsletters per year.

Membership in the Ontario Social Service Workers Association is available to Social Service Worker students and graduates for $20.00 yearly.

Any Social Service Worker student or graduate interested in becoming a member of the Ontario Social Service Workers Association can contact any member of the Steering Committee at the above address.

Sincerely, Susan Balaz,

OSSWA Steering Committee
