The Long Way Round Carignan 2017

Our take... "Winemaker Jenny Villa-Lobos has an unwavering energy and passion that is embedded in this wine. The Long Way Round Carignan, from Chile’s Valle Central, really pays homage to a dedication in nurturing single varietals. This blend shows off the diverse nature of Carignan – cassis, raspberry, spice and more as each glass evolves. Try it with cured meats and smoked cheese."

Where's it from? The warm growing conditions in the Central Valley are perfect for red grapes to ripen slowly. Terroir is paramount, so hand-selected parcels from various sites give us superior quality Carignan that has an intensity of fruit.

Great with... Carignan has good acidity and is pretty versatile. Go for a platter of antipasti, pair with moussaka or wait for the clove-studded gammon with cranberry sauce.

Lovely budget

Burgundy

Les Arbousiers Reserve Pinot Noir 2016

Our take... "This is our first Pinot Noir from the south of France for a good while. Like all good things, it's necessary to wait. In this case, to wait for the right vintage to make subtle, juicy and delicious red from this most difficult of grapes. It has light cherry and strawberry flavours and a delightful freshness that keeps it all alive on the tongue"

Where's it from? This comes from the Pays d'Oc in France's deep south. There's plenty of sunshine and heat down there so the best wines are ripe and fresh at the same time. That's the key to quality, a touch of freshness.

Great with... Believe it or not this lush Pinot will pair well with roast chicken as well as the more traditional game birds. It's also great with pork.

Winemaker’s words... "As a winemaker I like a challenge and Pinot is certainly that! The trick is to pick at the right moment where the freshness is retained but there are no green aspects. The 2016 was amazing in terms of natural balance".

...Whatever will be

Syrah you see and

it’s from Lodi!

Que Syrah Syrah 2016

Our take... “This funky pop art-esque bottle showcases romance and heartbreak, setting the scene for this hip offering from Tom Rappé of Bear Creek Winery. It’s a return of their glorious Syrah from Lodi in California. This region is really at the epicentre of unique finds. Notes of blackcurrant, silky chocolate, a hint of violet, a bit of cinnamon and spicy vanilla pod – a warming delight and SO drinkable."

Where's it from? Between the Frisco Bay and Sierra Nevada Mountains lies Lodi. The avante-garde winemakers here planted a multitude of grape varieties with much success. Sandy soils make for the smoothest of wines, just like this dreamy Syrah.

Great with... For this smooth, vanilla laden Syrah, try something hearty like pan fried haunch of venison or for a vegetarian main, grilled stuffed mushrooms with gorgonzola.

Shed Ten Shiraz 2016

Our take... "The Shed Ten Shiraz is the embodiment of everything that the best South Australian Shiraz has to offer - dark, juicy hedgerow fruit, a little white pepper and decadent vanilla pod. There's a silky mouth-feel to this wine and vibrant blackcurrant fruit hits your palate. Undoubtedly with its richness this is a food wine and succulent beef dishes will be your first port of call.”

Where's it from? Long hours of sunshine in the day and cooling nights on the Limestone coast suit Shiraz to a tee. The soils impart a unique minerality to the wine and we have the best resources for eking out all that concentration of fruit.

Great with... Rib-eye, béarnaise sauce, thick cut duck fat chips - Shiraz heaven. For some 'umami' flavour, match with Miso, tofu and mushroom ramen.

Winemaker’s words... “We have a cache of ideal sites here in South Australia where Shiraz thrives. Limestone, clay, and volcanic soils give all those important nutrients that help with the structure and richness of the finished wine.”

Smashing little cool-

climate Chardonnay

that refreshes above

all else

Shed Ten Padthaway Chardonnay 2017

Our take... "The key to quality in this wine is the smashing, cool location of the vines, in South Australia's Limestone Coast. The longer growing season stops the vines stressing and the fruit is beautifully, and natrually ripe. This wine doesn't need oak to shine. It has a gentle citrus core that gives on to soft pear fruit texture on the tongue and is speared by a gorgeous freshness that keeps it lively".

Where's it from? Padthaway is four hours south of Adelaide, near the end of the neverending Long Bay beach. The climate here is entirely cooler than the Barossa further north and is great for balanced whites.

Great with... The Limestone Coast is famous for its seafood, especially crays, so you might want to tee this up with some lobster or langoustines, done simply.

Winemaker’s words... "Working in such a great viticultural area makes the job a lot easier. We aren't fighting the vines and the production is so much more natural feeling. We don't have to play around with it in the winery, it just works".

Orchard fruit and lemon

notes from this superb c

grape duo in NW Italy

Anello Garganega Pinot Grigio 2017

Our take... “Claudio Manera’s consistency of quality Northern Italian grapes shines in the Anello. Underpinned by almonds, some tropical fruit and pear, Garganega beautifully marries with the delicate citrus of the Pinot Grigio. Their collaboration is one of purity of fruit, and a lengthy finish. Imagine three hour lunches in the hills of Piemonte with Alba truffle and parmesan ravioli shared with friends.”

Where's it from? Araldica is based in Piemonte, and the focus on microclimates, including the sun’s aspect to the land means the sites are ideal for these grapes varieties to grow. These Italian grapes never lose their identity in the blend.

Great with... For the Anello, an array of fresh egg pasta would welcome this seamless blend of grapes. Try fish cakes with crunchy radicchio salad and a lemon oil dressing.

Pizo Chardonnay 2016

Our take... “The chilly peaks of the Carinenan hills are surprising little jewels for quality Chardonnay in an otherwise red wine dominated landscape. Cooler temperatures lead to subtle but super fresh white wine, the perfect style for Chardonnay to show off the elegance it's famous for. All things about the Pizo has an understated beauty, from label right through to the last sip.”

Where's it from? Way up in the hills southwest of Zaragoza, Cariñena is a small appellation that makes wines with a distinctive natural freshness that's the order of the day in modern wine tastes. The microclimate brings out the elegance of the Chardonnay beautifully.

Great with... A full spectrum, where the fresh citrus flavours complement light seafood and Asian cuisine, but the richness beneath stands up to roast chicken and creamy pasta dishes.

Winemaker’s words... “I make a lot of red wine, it's what best suits our surroundings. But I'm most proud of the Chardonnay which we grow in very special little plots where the microclimate and slate soil is just right.”

Lemony, herbal, intense

Savvy made by a

hot, young discovery

winemaker

Les Arbousiers Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2016

Our take... “The vines that lie within sight of the Med have a few pockets that can, and do, make really, really good Sauvignon Blanc. It won't break the bank and is excellent value for money. This is exactly why we have made this reserve wine with winemaker Isabell Pangault. She knows her stuff and this herbal, citrus classic delivers in spades: a lovely, intense expression of the grape.”

Where's it from? This wine is from the Pays d'Oc, a wonderful area in the Mediterranean France that built the reputation of the south from the very start of the vinous revolution down there. It has relatively fewer rules and lots of great wine.

Great with... Like all good French Sauvignon, this wine is quite excellent with shellfish of many a stripe. It is particularly good with raw oysters and clams.
