We’d also like to wish everyone a very healthy and happy 2020. While the holiday season is a very joyous time of year for many of us, please remember that it is also the time of year that many others suffer most greatly from sadness and depression. Please remember your friends, family, and neighbors that may be suffering from extreme sadness or depression because they’re alone, have recently lost a loved one, are battling a serious illness, have lost a job, or are dealing with some other type of personal or family crisis. If you do know someone that is dealing with some type of sadness or depression during the holidays, please remember that doing something as simple as taking the time for a visit or even a phone call can really make a difference in those people’s lives and can help them feel much better. Of course, if you have serious concerns about a friend or loved one’s condition, the Police Department is available as a 24/7/365 resource to help people dealing with these types of crises, and I would encourage you to contact us for help or guidance. Working together, we can help brighten the holiday season for our friends, family and neighbors and, most importantly, prevent a tragedy from occurring. Speaking of brightening the holiday season for people, the Police Department and our Police Benevolent Association have, once again, “adopted” a number of families in the community for the Christmas holiday. As usual, a number of area businesses, churches, schools, and individuals are supporting the Police Department as we try to brighten the holiday season for some families in need. We really look forward to this opportunity to help make the holidays more enjoyable for some of our friends and neighbors. On behalf of all of the men and women of the North Fond du Lac Police Department, we’d like to wish everyone a very safe, peaceful and joyous Christmas and holiday season!

Thank you for taking the time to read this edition of the ‘North Fond du Lac Neighborhood Policing Times’ and for your continued support and interest in the Police Department and our community.

RESOLVED

The information provided in this column is not a full report of all of the activity the North Fond du Lac Police Department has responded to or investigated during this time period. These cases are just some of the incidents that have been successfully resolved. It is our hope that by making you aware of incidents that have occurred in your community, you will be better prepared to protect yourself and your property from similar incidents.

On September 10, police responded to a Damage to Property complaint at a North Pioneer Road business. The owner reported that a neighboring automotive repair business had dragged a broken down vehicle through his parking lot, resulting in skid marks and scoring of the surface. A 42 year-old NFDL man was issued a citation for Deface/Destroy Property.

On October 15, during a routine traffic stop on Lakeshore Drive, the operator was discovered to have multiple warrants for his arrest. While being taken into custody, the man told police that he had drug paraphernalia in his backpack. A search revealed syringes, cotton balls, alcohol wipes, and five pills in the backpack. The 38 year-old FDL man was arrested for Unlawful Possession of Prescription Drugs and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

On October 18, police received a report of an erratic driver that had exited onto Winnebago Street from I-41. A responding officer observed the suspect vehicle traveling EB on Winnebago Street with the right turn signal continually activated. The vehicle then turned left onto Prospect Avenue while still indicating a right turn. The officer stopped the vehicle and noted the odors of alcohol and marijuana when speaking with the driver. The driver admitted that he had been drinking, and he completed field sobriety testing. The 38 year-old FDL man was subsequently arrested for OWI-3rd offense and Possession of Marijuana after a search of the subject resulted in the discovery of 31 grams of marijuana.

On October 23, police responded to a disturbance at a residence in the 900 block of Michigan Avenue. Responding officers learned that the victim’s son had struck her in the leg with a broom handle after she told him to stop yelling at the dogs. The victim had cell phone video of the incident and had several welts on her leg. The 17 year-old NFDL teen was arrested for Battery – Domestic Abuse.

On October 30, police responded to a fraud complaint at an apartment in the 400 block of Harrison Street. The victim told police that he received a text alert for an attempted purchase using his credit card in Greenfield, WI. Upon checking his account, he discovered that two unauthorized charges had been made at Walmart in Fond du Lac. Officers worked with the store to review transaction data and surveillance video, and they were able to identify the suspect. The 20 year-old Oshkosh woman was referred to the District Attorney for Fraudulent Use of a Financial Transaction Card.

On November 6, police responded to a residence in the 600 block of Wisconsin Avenue for a stolen car complaint. The victim told police that he had loaned his car to a friend for the afternoon on November 4th, and it hadn’t been returned. On November 9, the vehicle was recovered by police in Greendale, WI. A 39 year-old FDL man was referred to the District Attorney for Auto Theft.

On November 11, while on patrol, an officer observed a vehicle lose control and slide into the curb on Prospect Avenue at Lincoln Street. When the officer stopped to assist, the male driver fled the scene on foot. The subject was later identified after he called a local towing service looking for his vehicle. It was determined that the man’s driver’s license was revoked, he had 15 prior convictions for Operating After Revocation, and three outstanding arrest warrants. The 24 year-old Eden man was referred to the District Attorney for Resisting/Obstructing an Officer and Bailjumping. He was also issued citations for Operating After Revocation – 16th offense, Non-registration of Vehicle, and Fail to Maintain Control of Vehicle.

On November 15, police responded to a disturbance at a North Rolling Meadows Drive business. Responding officers learned that two brothers, working as contractors remodeling the office, were involved in a physical fight. The younger brother reportedly choked his older brother and struck him numerous times, including with a shovel. He then fled the scene before police arrived. The 28 year-old FDL man was referred to the District Attorney for Substantial Battery – Domestic Abuse.

On November 30, police responded to a disturbance on Gaslight Drive in the Gaslight Terrace Mobile Home Park. Officers learned that several men were involved in a dispute at the residence. The initial argument apparently stemmed from jealousy over family relationships. During the altercation, one man was pushed up against his vehicle by the throat, and a window was broken when a beer bottle was thrown. Two NFDL men, ages 28 and 24, were referred to the District Attorney for Disorderly Conduct and Damage to Property. A 28 year-old FDL man was also referred to the District Attorney for Disorderly Conduct.

For most of us the holidays mean spending time with family and friends, decorating our homes and shopping for gifts. Unfortunately, for criminals the holidays are a time of added opportunities to steal and otherwise victimize others. The season also brings with it the increased risk of accidents. Here are some tips to make sure the holidays are safe and enjoyable.

Always lock doors and windows when leaving the house, even for a few minutes.

When leaving for an extended time, have friends or family watch the house and take in newspapers and mail. And contact the police department to request a vacation house check while you’re away.

Use timers to turn on lights, a radio or television so the house looks and sounds occupied.

Make sure that large displays of gifts are not visible through the windows and doors of your home.

Stay alert to your surroundings & the people around you.

When out shopping, always keep your windows rolled up and the doors locked, whether driving or when parked.

Never leave purses, wallets or cash in an unattended vehicle & Keep purchases in your trunk, never in view, so that your vehicle isn’t a tempting target.

Do not carry your social security card in your wallet or purse; Avoid carrying large amounts of cash & remove any credit cards or checkbooks you won’t be using.

When shopping online, make sure to shop reputable online businesses and only on secure sites. Do not use public wi-fi spots to do your online shopping; these wireless networks are not secure.

If hosting a holiday party, provide plenty of non-alcoholic drink alternatives and never force drinks on guests.

Plan ahead! When attending a party, bring along a designated driver, make arrangements for a taxi or ask your host if you may stay overnight. As few as three drinks can double the chances of you being in an accident.

It is our hope that following these tips will help make your holiday season merry and safe!

The North Fond du Lac Santa parade took place on Thursday, December 5th. Santa Claus made his annual visit to North Fond du Lac, and was escorted along the parade route by police and fire vehicles. Santa and his elves left the police department at 5:15. In addition to cruising through neighborhoods, Santa made brief stops at Optimists Park and made a special home visit to hand out candy canes and greet anxious visitors. With fair weather, Santa was met by a great turnout this year. Many more children and parents were on hand at the Community Center for festivities sponsored by Spillman Library. The kids joined him there to make crafts, enjoy cookies and milk, and to listen to a story read by Santa. Parents also had the opportunity to get pictures of their children with Santa.
