#1 SCRATCH THAT FAVORITE SPOT

Most horses really enjoy having certain spots on their bodies scratched, especially

when it is one they can’t reach or other horses don’t usually scratch.

If you find a spot that your horse REALLY likes it is an excellent way to encourage

your horse to want to be with you.

Try different areas and notice your horse’s reaction. Look for signs that s/he is

LOVIN’ being scratched in that spot.

These include:

• Lip quivering.

• Leaning toward you.

• Pulling funny faces.

• Staying with you and not moving away.

Most horse lovers know that the withers are a good place to scratch most horses.

But try other areas on your horse and notice their reaction.

Check out the image on the next page for some more uncommon spots that your

horse might enjoy being scratched.

6

Also try using different amounts of pressure or different speeds when you scratch.

Try scratching up and down and in circles.

Find out HOW your horse likes to be scratched as well as WHERE.

#2 FIND A TREAT YOUR HORSE CRAVES

They say that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, and the same could

be said of most horses. Horses were designed to eat for at least 16 hours a day, so

food is high on their list of favorite things.

• Offer your horse different treats and see which ones s/he really loves.

• Bake some special treats.

• Buy some pre-made treats online or from your local horse store.

• Try simple foods like carrots and apples.

Here is a link to the recipe for a very simple horse treat that you could bake for your

horse:

#3 SAY HI TO YOUR HORSE

Every time you go out to see your horse, before you ask him to do anything… say

“Hi.”

Rather than just throwing on a halter and catching your horse, take a moment to

greet your horse.

Saying hi is the polite and respectful way that friends greet each other.

Horses say hi by touching noses. You can do something similar by making a soft fist

with your hand (knuckles up) and hold it out toward your horse. Let you horse

touch or sniff your hand.

#4 HELP YOUR HORSE TO LEARN

Most horses enjoy learning and working things out (just like us humans). But if a

task is too difficult the horse can become frustrated or confused.

To avoid this, make learning easy and enjoyable for your horse by breaking the task

down into super simple steps.

Once your horse understands that you can help him to learn, he will then look to

you for direction and guidance when presented with new situations.

Here’s an example of some training I’ve been doing recently with my horse Bella.

GOAL: Teach Bella to put her foot up on a hoof stand, out in her paddock, without

any restraint.

First I thought of my end goal and then I broke the task down into smaller steps.

To start I just wanted to teach her to put her foot ON something. Then I slowly

increased the height so she could learn to balance with one foot up and forward.

Then finally I introduced the hoof stand.

10

STEPS:

1. Put hoof on a small mat on the ground.

2. Put hoof on a small block of wood.

11

3. Put hoof on two blocks of wood.

4. Put hoof on hoof stand.

12

At each step I made sure she really understood what I wanted before moving onto

the next (and more difficult) step. This meant I needed to practice some steps for a

few days.

I kept the sessions very short (just 5 minutes each time) and practiced a couple of

times a day when I could. Horses have very short attention spans, so teaching them

in quick sessions keeps them interested and motivated.

If she showed any sign of frustration or confusion it meant I hadn’t made the next

step easy enough for her to understand. So I thought about ways I could make it

even easier or I would go back to a previous step and practice that more.

Once she was happy to put her foot up on the stand I then worked on increasing

the time that she kept it there.

Within 2 weeks she was putting her foot up on the hoof stand while she was free

out in her paddock. She then stood calmly while I gave her a quick trim.

Learning this new task was fun for her and me and makes my life a lot easier! :)

#5 BE A SAFE PLACE

One of the best ways to make your horse fall in love with you is to make sure that

they always feel safe when they are with you. Along with food and water, safety is a

top priority for a horse.

If your horse feels safe around you then they will be calmer

when you introduce them to new places, objects or situations.

Your horse will learn faster, retain more information and it will

do wonders for their confidence and trust in you.

Some ways to help your horse feel safe include:

• Be consistent. Horses like their humans to be predictable.

• Keep your emotions in check. Horses can sense changes in your mood and if

you are projecting negative emotions such as anger, frustration or fear your

horse will feel unsafe.

• Introduce your horse to new objects and situations in a slow, patient and

calm manner.

• Teach your horse new things in small, easy-to-understand steps.

• Encourage and reward your horse as they learn new things.

• Observe your horse’s body language and make sure that they are calm at all

times when they are with you.

14

#6 BE INTERESTING

While horses like their humans to be reliable and consistent they also love to have

some variety in their life. Try to do something new together every day, even for just

a few minutes.

• Go for a short walk somewhere your horse hasn’t been before.

• Show your horse a new toy or object.

• Offer him an unusual horse safe food (eg celery, banana or watermelon).

• Pop something that smells interesting (like a herb) in a plastic container with

holes that s/he can sniff.

• Play some interesting sounds on a small portable speaker or your phone.

When you spend time together doing activities that are fun and interesting, your

horse will really fall in love with you!
