WISCONSIN YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAS 1966 SPRING 2014 NEWSLETTER Upcoming Events Dear WYSO Alumni and Alumni Parents, On Saturday, March 8th I had the privilege of meeting and working with all six talented WYSO bassoonists. Listening to them talk about rehearsals and the upcoming tour flooded me with fond memories of my days in WYSO. Every Saturday, from seventh grade to my senior year of high school, I made the journey from Monroe, WI to the Humanities Building in Madison. It is hard to express how much my experiences in WYSO molded me into the musician I am today. My final years in Youth Orchestra stand out the most. Maestro Smith created an environment in rehearsals that prepared me for the professional world of music. Once while rehearsing a Martinu symphony, not all people were properly prepared and he quietly excused the entire orchestra from rehearsal! Because I learned to respect my peers and conductors, I never to go rehearsals with the Houston Symphony, or any group, unprepared. Last season the Houston Symphony performed Nielsen’s Fourth symphony, “The Inextinguishable”. Although thirteen years had passed from learning the symphony in Youth Orchestra, the piece was familiar because of the meticulous rehearsals under Mr. Smith. He taught me how to listen to an orchestra. Working on Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony with the Youth Orchestra bassoonists Evan Chambers, Ryan Skotzke, and Joey A Letter from Elise Wagner Korger brought back memories of the Japan Tour in 1998. I vividly remember all of the rehearsals preparing the same symphony for that tour. I cannot count how many times I have performed Tchaikovsky 4 to date, but Mr. Smith’s interpretation remains a favorite. Writing about memories of WYSO would be incomplete if I didn’t mention the strong impact the organization has had on my entire family. My brother Charles Wagner, who is a member of the Youngblood Brass band, and I are the second generation of Goeres/Wagner WYSO members. My mother Susan, Aunt Nancy (Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra), Aunt Lucy and Uncle Bob are all WYSO alums. Rarely does a holiday pass when stories from WYSO are not shared. As the years pass I realize more and more how fortunate the young musicians of Wisconsin are to have a remarkable organization like the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras. Thank you to all current and past members of the Board, donors, administrative staff, musicians, and families for your dedication to keeping WYSO alive and strong! Forever Grateful, Elise Wagner B.A. from Temple University M.A. from Carnegie Mellon University Bassoonist with the Houston Symphony Orchestra since 2008 Faculty member with the University of Houston WISCONSIN YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA 455 N. es Kristen Burkholder, Flute, ’74-’77, was the WYSO librarian from 1979-1981. She attended the UW, then on to the State University New York at Stony Brook, ending with a Master’s in music. She toured with Mantovani and played in some opera companies in Florida, then moved to Chicago and freelanced until the late ‘90s, when she went back to school. Now she works for the Indian Health Service as a doctor in one of the most remote parts of the Navajo reservation. After not playing for 10 years, now she sings and plays kitchen implement-percussion in a band full of folks who don’t read music, called the “Pinon Pickers”. Who’da thunk...

Tess Dozier, Oboe, ’06-’09, is currently living in Puerto Rico where she will soon graduate with a bachelor’s in social work. She has future plans to work at the Christian School and Chapel for the Deaf (CSCD) as the office/social worker. For the past year, she has had the opportunity to play and help the handbell choir with the students as CSCD.

Ben Ferris, String Bass, ’04-’08, is about to graduate with a Bachelor of Music-Education from UW-Madison. He will be pursuing teaching positions for the next year. He also has substituted a couple times as the WYSO bass sectional coach.

Emily Hill Lewis, Viola, ’00-‘01’, has been married to Ethan Lewis since 10/10. She is into her third season of playing viola with the Saint Paul Civic Symphony. It is her first year playing viola with the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis’ Orchestra, and she is also singing in their Chorus. She volunteered as a violist with the Keene Chamber Orchestra, and Mayo Clinic Chamber Symphony. She played professionally with the Rochester Symphony in their 2011-2012 season. She earned a B.S. in Psychology and Environmental Studies from UW-Madison in 2005, a M.S. in Natural Resources from UW-Stevens Point in 2008, and her Early Childhood Credential from the American Montessori Society in 2011. She currently works as a Preschool Teacher at Children’s Country Day School in Mendota Heights, MN, and uses her musical training in piano, viola, and voice with her students on a daily basis.

Mark Kausch, String Bass, ’79-’82, teaches string bass at several Minneapolis-St. Paul colleges and universities including The College of St. Benedict-St. John’s University, Bethel University, Hamline University and Augsburg College. He is also the director of the CSB-SJU Double Bass Ensemble and CSB-SJU Consort of Viols. Each year, and in addition to the college duties, he teaches roughly 20-25 students age 10 to 18 in his home studio. In the daytime he’s a content

manager for Public Radio International, working with content creators on development and distribution of their programming to approximately 850 PRI affiliate radio stations.

Bruce Matthews, Horn, ’66—67, was the manager of WYSO from 1980 – 1983 at a time when they organized the first annual fund campaign with guidance from Dick Wolf, Martha Fuiget, Marion Bolz, and Shirley and Stan Inhorn. Then his oldest daughter, Kristin Matthews, became the first second generation member of WYSO as a violist around 1985. Even though he no longer plays the horn, he has provided counsel to several orchestras including the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, the Dayton Philharmonic, the Minnesota Orchestra and the Milwaukee Symphony.

Geri Nolden, Violin, ’93-‘99, attended UW - Madison and majored in music education and currently is the Orchestra Director at Stoughton High School. She has also have been a member of the Madison Symphony since the fall of 2003.

Samuel Rolfe, Flute, ’09-’11, is currently studying off-campus in Chicago. He has an internship with Old Town School of Folk Music in their education department. “It’s great to experience firsthand the impact of an education institution on the community!”

Sue Ellen Wilder, Cello, ’70-’72, will be retiring from teaching in 2014. She has taught music since 1977. She studied with Dr Rabin at UW Madison. She is presently the Department Head for Halifax All City Music Program, which offers 7 honor choirs, 3 jazz ensembles, Concert Band, Honor violins, a full symphony orchestra and the string program for the Halifax Regional School Board. She will be finishing her Masters of Ed in Curriculum Studies (focus in Creativity) in July 2014, and looking forward to new adventures. Her musical life is being enriched by her discovery of the Hardanger fiddle, and learning alternative and eclectic styles from all over. She has 3 daughters, all three very creative and wonderful women. Her younger brother Tom Wilder, who also played in WYSO after her (trombone) just got married in Oct 2013 and is living in Minneapolis. He still plays occasionally and loves music.

Mikaela Wilmoth, Horn, ’08-’12, graduated in 2012 and is currently a Sophomore music education major at Bradley University. She is a vocal major; however, she is also the principle horn in the Bradley Symphony Orchestra, and the Bradley Symphonic Winds ensemble. She is an active member of the Bradley Chorale as well.

Please Help Us Reach Our Goal The WYSO annual fund helps us keep tuition affordable and supports a myriad of opportunities for our members including tuition and private lesson scholarships, instruments, music, tours and of course the superb artistic staff that ensures WYSO remains one of the top youth orchestra programs in the country. Our goal this year is $105,000. We’re getting close and with your help, we can reach our goal! Please use the enclosed envelope or donate online at wyso.music.wisc.edu/support-wyso. Thank you so much for your support of the annual campaign.

George William BielefeldOn January 26, 2014 WYSO lost a dear friend and supporter in George William Bielefeld at age 86. His son Rob and daughter Kris, were members of WYSO. George became an active fundraiser for WYSO, later serving on the Board of Directors. It was during his time, as President of the Board, that WYSO made its first trip overseas. George was a strong believer in the principle of giving back, which he showed in his daily life. He will be dearly missed by WYSO and all who knew him.

Ralph Rabin, Brenda DeVita, Bridget Fraser, Diane Ballweg, Andrew Sewell

It is with great sadness we share the news that WYSO’s founder, Dr. Marvin Rabin has passed away at the age of 97. He was a mentor, friend and teacher to the many people who have been involved with his beloved organization. Dr. Rabin was a dynamic force for music education and the performing arts in the state of Wisconsin. Since his founding of WYSO in 1966 up until his passing, Dr. Rabin worked relentlessly to bring music to the forefront of every child’s education in Wisconsin and around the world.

Dr. Rabin was known internationally as a string development specialist and for his leadership of youth orchestras. He was an Emeritus Professor of Music and the director of the Wisconsin String and Orchestral Development Program for the Department of Continuing Education in the Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He conducted all-state high school orchestras, youth orchestras, festivals and workshops in forty eight states, and many countries around the world. Dr. Rabin was a gifted and extremely knowledgeable speaker and served as an expert lecturer on string pedagogy around the country.

During his career Dr. Rabin was instrumental in founding two outstanding youth orchestra programs: The Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras in Madison and the Greater Boston Youth Orchestras (now the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra). As a musician he played viola in several professional ensembles in

Kentucky. He was the recipient of innumerable awards throughout the country from music clubs and organizations for his crusade for strings. In 2001 the American String Teachers Association honored Dr. Rabin with the creation of a new award: The Marvin J Rabin Award. It is presented to an individual or organization who makes significant contributions to their community (local, regional or professional) by their string/orchestra teaching and leadership. It is more than fitting that such an award be named after Dr. Rabin.

On a personal level, he was a truly remarkable and charming person who will be missed by many, many people. He touched and changed so many people’s lives around the world that his great legacy is certain to live on in all of them.
