A Paddle-Ball Life
I have always found writing an article for the church newsletter challenging. What I find challenging is that
writing an article forces me, for a short time at least, to live in the future. Here’s an example.
We are in the midst of Lent. The entire month of March is in Lent. Yet, here I find myself thinking about
the April edition of the Net x Work. What’s the big deal, you may ask. Well, the big deal is that I cannot
ignore the truth that Easter is in April, and heaven forbid that I do not reflect in the April newsletter upon
Easter -- one of the two most significant events in the life of our Faith.
So here I am struggling to get into a Lenten rhythm and having to already think about a time when Lent is no
more and the Alleluias! have returned.
This captures the tension of life in many ways. We live in the present. We have our daily, weekly routines
that are so familiar to us. Yet, we also know that we must keep our eyes on the future: our next appointment,
our child’s next school event or choir rehearsal, our own longed for vacation, those looming deadlines we’d
sooner forget. Our thoughts become like a “paddle ball” – constantly bouncing from the present to the future
and back again. It is exhausting.
Lent invites us to slow the pace of life and examine what truly matters. As we seek to
reconnect with ourselves, our families, our God, we can examine what truly matters. We
see what truly matters just beginning to break over the eastern horizon – the reminder of
the New Day in which we truly live – the Day of Resurrection.
We are nothing if we are not grounded in the promise of Easter: the promise that no matter what the world
says about us or does to us, Jesus is the constant life-giving presence. Jesus has come through the worst this
world can do so that when we encounter the challenges of this world, we have a guide, Jesus Christ, to walk
with us, uphold us, and assure us that all shall truly be well.
Please, live into the Season of Lent. Yet, strain forward to the promise that Easter will return. Live into the
Season of Lent, but know that Christ is still present to comfort and guide. Live into the Season of Lent, so
that when we do arrive once again at Easter, our Alleluias! will mean so much more.
Faithfully,
Grant+

The Episcopal Church Women have a long history for triumphing local and global issues affecting women and girls. Their work encompasses migration issues, including the reasons for why people from other countries look for asylum, or a better life for themselves and their families in the United States. They take a keen interest in local and national work regarding refugees and immigrants and how your parish can support persons detained at the borders or elsewhere. Human Trafficking education using videos, articles, and lectures encompass a large portion of their social justice program. They work to provide a haven of kindness, understanding, and safety for victims of Human Trafficking. They are active in organizing rallies and demonstrations for the purpose of raising awareness of women’s causes as well as working with local and national lawmakers to implement legislation for the benefit of the family. You are invited to share how you are making a difference in the world or how you wish to get involved with the ECW Social Justice ministries.
The ECW Social Justice Facebook page is a repository of the social justice ministries of all Episcopal Church Women. We invite you to share your wisdom and the work you do regarding immigration issues, human trafficking, and racial reconciliation. You can help inspire others to do the work on behalf of others, as Christ taught us! To share for publication please send an email to
