Data sets

Scottish Library and Information Resources Annual printed directory of library Locations and

contacts (Agents) Collections implicit; derived from organizations

Scottish Working Group on Official Publications Directory of library sub-collections of International

Governmental Organizations and Governments Up to 6 levels of granularity

Research Collections Online (Conspectus) Collection strengths: National Library and universities

+ Web pages; printed guides; other directories

Exploring Scottish history

Directory of genealogical and local history resources held in Scotland also North Berwick, England (x Scotland)

Mainly bibliographic resources BDM registers; gravestone inscriptions;

local history; military lists; clans; property registers

Selected and described by the Scottish Local History Forum Independent expert user group

Scottish Museums Council

MS Access database driving a web-based directory of Scottish museums

330 museums, ranging from a croft (peasant farm) to the Museum of Scotland

Flat-file disaggregated and incorporated into SCONE in Oct-Nov 2003

Overlap (locations and agents) with 80 SCONE collections = 25%

Page 18: N Dunsire, G. Razvoj sheme relacijske baze podataka za opise na razini zbirke u Skotskoj mrezi zbirki = Development of a relational database schema for

Libraries and Museums

Overlap is a result of the Exploring Scottish History directory

Local history resources distributed between libraries and museums Museums better for interpretation and

context Clan and military regiment information in

museums Books and manuscripts in “birthplace”

museums

Page 19: N Dunsire, G. Razvoj sheme relacijske baze podataka za opise na razini zbirke u Skotskoj mrezi zbirki = Development of a relational database schema for

Common data

Overlap mainly occurs with physical location (address, opening hours, etc.) and contact details (telephone, website, email)

Significant errors in Museums data But sometimes more up-to-date than

SCONE/ESH SCONE location and contact details for

libraries checked and updated annually Immediate benefit to museums

Page 20: N Dunsire, G. Razvoj sheme relacijske baze podataka za opise na razini zbirke u Skotskoj mrezi zbirki = Development of a relational database schema for

Archives?

Scottish Archives Network (SCAN) www.scan.org.uk 20 000 collections in 52 archives EAD for collection descriptions (compatible

with SCONE) Includes directory of location and contact

details for each archive 80% overlap with SCONE (informal

analysis) Again, mainly because of ESH!

Page 21: N Dunsire, G. Razvoj sheme relacijske baze podataka za opise na razini zbirke u Skotskoj mrezi zbirki = Development of a relational database schema for

Implications

Users do not make the same distinctions between library and museum collections as professionals for print-based resources Same for digital resources? (Of course!)

Location and agent data have significant overlap The most volatile data (opening hours, URLs, email

addresses) - difficult to maintain Integrated national or regional information service

will benefit citizens and cultural tourists Also less costly to maintain
