FROM THE DIRECTOR

FROM THE ARTISTIC/MANAGING DIRECTOR

Welcome to another of ACT’s Young People’s Theatre (YPT) productions. This year we have made “Aladdin JR.” our YPT production of the main stage season. The response from last season’s YPT show, “Godspell Jr.” was overwhelmingly positive. Thanks for supporting the youth of our community by attending this performance. About half of the 60 young people involved in this production are veterans to ACT’s YPT programing. The other half are new and sharing their talents with us for the first time. How exciting! I’d like to thank them all for sharing their talents here on the Capitol Theatre stage. For some of the new performers, this may be the only show they will be involved in. However, I’d venture to say from experience, most will return to the Capitol stage and continue their theatrical experiences at their schools, and indeed, on stages throughout the state and country. I want to thank you, the audience, for supporting these young people and ACT’s youth education program. They deserve your patronage and we appreciate you attending this production. I know you’ll enjoy the efforts of the young people in their production of “Aladdin JR.” Please consider making a contribution to the Young People’s Theatre program. (See the back page of this program for details.) As most of you are aware, Brian Schultz has been the education director here at the Aberdeen Community Theatre for 15 years. I’m proud of ACT’s YPT program, which Brian

has spent so much time building and he will continue that progress as he expands his duties here at ACT. With this season, Brian has been named Associate Artistic/Managing Director of the Aberdeen Community Theatre. This more accurately reflects the duties he has grown into here at ACT, being a partner in the growth and development of Aberdeen Community Theatre. What’s coming up next for ACT? This is a festival year. As a part of the American Association of Community Theatre (AACT), the Aberdeen Community Theatre has always participated in AACT’s biennial event each year since we were first eligible in 1981. This year we are writing our own show based on some of the characters of the original production, “Mavis’ Prez-A-Palooza” we presented at the end of last season. We are currently in the process of writing the show, so watch for details coming soon. We don’t even have a working title yet, but Mavis will be front and center as the main character. It will not be a part of the main stage season, but it will be produced locally in the first full week of April and will be vying for the opportunity to represent SD at the Region V festival the last week in April in Brainerd, MN. And, if you haven’t heard, ACT will be producing “Sister Act” for its summer musical.Watch for audition and subsequent performance dates coming soon. Thanks for your support and I hope to see you at all 2017 productions and events this season.

JAMES L. WALKER

Welcome to the opening production of Aberdeen Community Theatre’s 2017 season. We are so glad you’re here to support our Young People’s Theatre program by attending their production of Disney’s “Aladdin JR.” Maybe it’s the appeal of a Disney show, maybe it’s the appeal of YPT, but this production features 40 kids onstage and nearly 20 more serving in technical aspects behind-the-scenes, ranging in age from 7 to 17. And with more than half of these youngsters new to YPT, I am encouraged about the continued growth of YPT into the future. In our adventure in taking on a Disney show (aka ‘The Mouse’), I told the kids to ignore everything they knew about the animated film and I also usually try to discourage watching other productions online (which are illegal, by the way). It’s such an important part of the theatrical process to learn how to become interpretive artists – to take the text and the notes written on the page and give them our own unique life and meaning. This is a tricky

balance when dealing with The Mouse, because of their massive popularity and established audience expectations, but it’s a vital part to theater education. Finally, I hope you’ve had opportunity to take in our video series on ACT’s Facebook page about all the different production elements and behind-the-scenes looks at the production process. It’s a great opportunity for anyone – youth to senior citizen – to see just what it takes to mount a production at the Aberdeen Community Theatre. And really, the process is not so different for an adult production. Hopefully, the series provided insight, dispelled some myths or sparked an interest in YOU getting involved in YOUR community theater. We need people with all sorts of talents and abilities; we can’t do what we do without you, so come on down and give it a try sometime! Thank you again for your support of Aberdeen area youth and please let us know what you think of their efforts. Thanks for coming.

JANE WEST (REDMOND) was a lover of all visual and performing arts. Her involvement in the nurture of these was evident in the early efforts to procure the Capitol Theatre building for the Aberdeen Community Theatre. The Jane West Gallery is dedicated to her memory.
