Definition

Myth is…• A traditional story, especially one concerning the

early history of a people or explaining a natural or social phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or events

• A fictitious or imaginary person or thing• A widely held but false belief or idea and/or• An exaggerated or idealized conception of a person

or thing

Different types of gods

There are lots of gods around the world. Some are scary, some are fierce, and some are just ancient-looking. However, today I’m showing you how some of the ancient gods in the ancient times.

• Egyptian gods• Norse gods• Greek gods

Egyptian gods• Egypt gods are the oldest (I think), since Egypt is one of the

first civilization in the ancient times• There are lots of god and goddesses that ancient Egyptians

worshipped. Most are still unknown. Only 29-30 are discovered.

• I’m going to show you now some of the ancient gods Egyptians used to worshipped.

Egypt gods

Amun• He is one of he ancient gods in Egypt. He was called ‘King of gods’.• Amun was important throughout the history of ancient Egypt. However,

when Amun was combined with the sun god Ra he was even more powerful. He was then called Amun-Ra.

Ra

• He is the sun god, the most important gods in Egypt.• The ancient Egyptians believed that Ra was swallowed every

night by the sky goddess Nut, and was reborn every morning.• The ancient Egyptians also believed that he travelled through

the underworld at night. In the underworld, Ra appeared as a man with the head of a ram.

Nut• Nut was the sky-goddess. Her body created a vault or canopy over the

earth.• The ancient Egyptians believed that at the end of the day, Nut swallowed

the sun-god, Ra, and gave birth to him again the next morning. • Nut was the sister/wife of Geb, the god of the earth. She was also the

mother of Isis, Osiris, Nepthys and Seth, which can be found here somewhere…

Atum• He is a creator god, also known as 'The All' or 'Perfection’.• The ancient Egyptians believed that Atum was the first god to exist

on earth.• The ancient Egyptians believed that Atum rose from the waters of chaos

(Nun, which could be found somewhere here…) and created all the gods.

Greek gods

• If you do not know Greek gods, watch Percy Jackson or clash/wrath of titans and you might have a idea who they are. They have protected Greece, well, till the Romans took over it. They are similar to the gods in the movies, except all the technology in the Percy Jackson movie.

• Their gods are in charge of something eg Zeus for thunder, hades for the underworld etc

• Before that, I need to tell you something. All the gods were sons or daughters of Cronus, leader of titans. Cronus was notorious for being a very jealous and greedy deity. Out of the fear one of his children could take his throne, Cronus swallowed every child Rhea was giving birth to.

Zeus and his history• Zeus was the supreme god in Ancient Greece, the father of the

Olympian gods and the ruler of mankind.• When Rhea gave birth to her last child, Zeus, she managed to trick

Cronus by giving her husband a rock in swaddling clothes to swallow, as a substitution to her child, and sent Zeus away

• Zeus was raised secretly by the Nymphs and the goat nurse Amaltheia, who fed him

• When Zeus was mature enough, he started a battle against his father and the Titans. This battle is also known as "Titanomachy".

• First, Zeus managed to make his father disgorge and throw out all his siblings

Then, with the help of his siblings, Zeus overthrew the Titans in the depths of the Underworld, the Tartarus.

• Zeus had his golden throne on the highest summit of Mount Olympus and was respected and awed by all Gods and mortals. All the kings boasted that they descended from Zeus.

• Zeus was the "Lord of Justice", punishing anyone who lied or broke an oath, but was fair and always striving to keep a balance of all things.

• Furthermore, Zeus was responsible for the weather and was shaping it according to his temper. When in high spirits, Zeus was blessing the world with fine weather; in case of bad mood, however, he would throw rain, winds, lightnings and thunderbolts to cause disaster to the mortals.

But even Zeus' powers had their limits, for, however powerful as he was, he had neither the right nor the ability to intervene in the decisions of the Fates.

Hades

• Hades was the God and Ruler of the Underworld• Hades means "invisible" in ancient Greek.• Hades was the supreme ruler of the Underworld. Almost

never did he leave his gloomy kingdom but was residing there

instead, surrounded by darkness and silence.

Poseidon• Poseidon was the Greek God of the seas, the horses and the

earthquakes.• Poseidon was considered to be the bad-tempered, moody and

greedy god among the Olympians. Once insulted, he would revenge himself, like he did in the case of Odysseus, who brutally blinded his son, the Cyclops Polyphemus. Poseidon loved to cross the oceans and seas with his golden chariot surrounded by dolphins.

• Poseidon was the Greek god responsible for natural and supernatural events, mainly the ones associated to the sea world and was the savior of ships. He possessed a trident which was so powerful that it could shake the earth. Poseidon was able to cause tempests and earthquakes, drown lands, shatter rocks and had the ability to finally bring back peacefulness.

Ares

• Ares was the Olympian god of war and defense and the figure behind all kind of violence

• He is son of Zeus and Hera, the goddess of marriage• Just like his mother Hera, Ares had a very difficult

character to deal with and was therefore rather unpopular among the other deities and mankind. For this reason, no Greek city wanted to have him as its patron. He often had conflicts and fights with his half-sisters Artemis and Athena, especially during the Trojan War.

Norse gods

• Norse gods came out in the movies and comics. Watch Thor, and you will realize this is related to that. Some are side characters, some are main characters, but all are what Norseman used to worshipped, and not the worshipping where you have all Thor’s action figures and comics.

• Like the greek gods, gods are in charge of something, and they have a brutal side of their life.

• Thor• Odin• Loki• Heimdallr

Thor

• He is son of Odin, god of thunder.• He usually carries a war hammer ‘Mjolnir’.• When the hammer was thrown, it returned magically to the

owner. The strike of the hammer caused thunderclaps. With the hammer, Thor performed his giant-killing duties.

• In English, Thursday is named after Thor.

Odin

• He is the king of gods.• He is a god of war and death, as well as a sky

god and the god of wisdom and poetry• his famous spear is called Gungnir, while his

precious arm ring is Draupnir• Odin only has one eye, because he sacrificed

one to drink from the fountain of wisdom.

Loki

• Loki is the son of a frost giant in Norse mythology. He is the personification of cunning, trickery, and evil. Loki is the Norse God of Mischief and Lies.

• At one time he was also known as being the God of Fire.• Although Loki is the son of a frost giant, he lives with the

gods on Asgard because he tricked Odin to becoming his blood brother. He has the power of changing his appearance (called Shape shifting) and even gender.

• He is a murderer, and did lots of terrible things.

Heimdall

• Heimdall (or Heimdallr) is one of the gods in Norse mythology. He is the guardian of the Bifrost Bridge. He was the son of nine different mothers and was called the White God.

• Heimdall is the guardian of the gods. He will blow a horn, called the Gjallarhorn, if Asgard is in danger. His senses are so good that he can hear the grass grow and he can see to the end of the world. Heimdall could hear a leaf fall. He also does not need any sleep at all.

• Heimdall was said to be the last of the gods to die at Ragnarök when he and Loki would kill one another

• There are many gods in our world, from Thor to some god in the mountains that we haven’t discover, and they are myths, ancient people making them out of pure imagination, to explain what is going on in their world

• While some people knew what is going on once science came up, but some people chose to believe in their god and continuing worshipping them.
