The PortraitMichael Hill

The portrait I have drawn is an experience of my life.It shows the shadows in my eyes.

The portrait I mastered in my strife,It’s the shade that does not lie.

The eyes are true to all that is new in me,It has no voice and cannot speak.

The ears that will not listen and learn or set me free. It’s my head that cannot bow, that does not nod,

it can but shriek.

The neck and shoulders must be a stand for my old head. Its that nose that will never smell a rose, or a Sunday roast.

The hair on my head is still, it will never need a comb, its like its made of lead.

Its that mouth that can’t eat or drink, no tea, no cheese on toast.

The chin that holds a beard no tears will fall upon.It starts on the blank page.

The chalk moves and marks like its on a stage for all to see, its stillness belongs.

“Whilst doing these drawings a lot of ‘stuff’ has arisen within me, stuff which I’m happy to say, even though rather hard to handle, is all part of the road towards recovery.”
