Welcome to Mystic Seaport’s 2009-2010 School Programs and Teacher Resource Guide.

Mystic Seaport—The Museum of America and the Sea—is an experiential education

facility and a long time favorite field trip destination.

This guide, developed by museum educators and classroom teachers, was created to

help educators select and schedule a program, including field trips to the museum as

well as school-based visits like our History-to-Go® and Science-to-Go programs. Each

guided tour is aligned with individual New England State Curriculum Frameworks for

math, science, language arts and social studies. Pre- and post-visit information with

activities to augment your Mystic Seaport experience is available on our web site at

www.mysticseaport.org/teachers.

We understand that arranging a field trip takes a tremendous amount of time and energy.

Teachers, students, and families alike will have a once-in-a-lifetime

opportunity during the 2009-2010 academic year to view the

historic restoration process of the Charles W. Morgan, the oldest wooden

whaling ship in the world. During this rare but necessary occurrence,

school groups may visit the Morgan and see how careful, historic

restoration is done on a national landmark. Depending on the stage of

restoration, not all groups who visit the Mystic Seaport Museum may

be able to climb aboard but will instead be able to view her

inner workings from a long lost vantage point. Combined with other

activities at Mystic Seaport, school groups will gain an even

better perspective of the work involved in building a whaleship

in the 19th Century.

Recommended for grades 4-6Immerse your students in the life of a nineteenth century seaport village through hands-on activities and special experiences. They can be apprentices in the Shipsmith, Carve Shop or Print Shop; learn to cook on an open hearth; meet a roleplayer or hear a Chantey perfor-mance; make a craft to take home; and board the L.A. Dunton or tour the Village in a horse-drawn trolley. Each student will have the opportunity to try three different activities during the program.

Cost is for this program only and does not include admission to the Seaport grounds. If you wish to visit the museum the cost is under the regulations of regular group rates. If you have questions, please contact 860.572.5322 or [email protected].

DO YOU NeeD MONeY fOr fielD trips? Funding for Focus Tour fees (including museum admission) is once again available for the 2009-2010 school year! Thanks to a generous donation from a private foundation, thousands of stu-dents will have the opportunity to visit Mystic Seaport. This year funds will be given out to schools that demonstrate the need for financial assistance. Priority funding will be given to Con-necticut schools with the remaining funds being distributed on a first-come-first-served basis to schools outside of Connecticut. Multidisciplinary Tours

sailOr’s WOrkRecommended for grades Pre-K through 1A sailor’s day was long and hard. In this one-hour tour, younger students explore the world of 19th-century vessels and crew.

Students may:

• Visit the L.A. Dunton, a 19th-century fishing schooner used to catch cod, learn about a doryman’s day, and row a dory (on land!);

• Explore a cooperage to find out how wooden containers or casks were made, rolled and used as units of measurement;

• Listen to a sailor’s story and learn a traditional sea chantey;

• Learn how ships were steered, tie a sailor’s knot and find out how sailors predicted the weather.

Guided Tours bring the complexities of the past into sharp focus for students and enrich classroom lessons with real-life experiences. To foster dialogue and encourage differentiated instruction, classes are divided into small groups of 10 to 15 students that are led by an experienced museum educator. The content for each tour is aligned with the Connecticut State Department of Education Curriculum Frameworks for language arts, science, social studies, math and science. life iN a seapOrt tOWN Recommended for grades 2-6The seaport towns of the 19th century were vibrant centers of commerce in America. The wharves and waterfront streets bustled with the flow of goods and people from throughout the world.

Students may:

• Explore a 19th-century coastal village and discover how people lived by visiting the Buckingham-Hall House;

• Investigate a working shipsmith shop where harpoons and other iron implements were made;

• Enter the ship chandlery and learn about the local economy & how vessels were outfitted for long voyages;

• Climb aboard one of our historic ships to learn more about the 19th-century whaling industry;

• Learn the important 19th-century skill of rope making and how to estimate lengths of rope.

This tour may be extended to include a 30-minute accompany-ing Planetarium Program – Stars and Constellations of the Current Season’s Sky – for an additional $2.50 per person. For an addi-tional $85 for groups of 45 or less, an accompanying on site role player program – Shipmates and Sister Sailors or 19th-Century School Master or Music on the Water – may be added.

WHalinGRecommended for grades 2-12Examine the New England whaling industry aboard the Charles W. Morgan, the last wooden whaling ship in the world.

Students may:

• Discover how ship owners outfitted 19th-century whaling vessels for three-to-five year voyages;

• Explore the Charles W. Morgan to see how 19th-century whalers made their livings;

• Use a harpoon

voyaGe to ameriCaRecommended for grades 3-8Travel through time and share the experiences of immigrants, ocean traders and explorers as they came to America for the first time.

Students may:

• Experience the immigration process by traveling through a mock Ellis Island immigration station;

• Visit the Voyages exhibit and learn about the journey many immigrants took to come to America, their reception upon

arriving here and their integration into American society;

• Read and respond to 19th-century journals, letters and diary entries;

• Describe and explain some of the reasons people immigrated and relate these reasons to historical movements based on race, ethnicity and class;

• Discuss what it means to be a U.S. citizen.

This tour may be extended to include a 30-minute accompanying Planetarium Program – Stars and Navigation by the Great Explorers – for an additional $2.50 per person. WeatHer WiSeRecommended for grades 4-9Learn the art and science of measuring and forecasting the weather by utilizing our unique Mystic River locale and historic vessels.

Students may:

• Identify and demonstrate two simple techniques for measuring weather phenomena;

• Describe the importance of weather forecasting onboard ships, historically and today;

• Explain how local weather conditions are related to the temperature, pressure and water content of the atmosphere and the proximity to a large body of water.

tEAchEr-lED toursOffered all yearTeacher-led Tours offer teachers the freedom to handcraft their visits to Mystic Seaport. Groups are encouraged to visit the restoration of the Charles W. Morgan, the last wooden whale ship in the world, visit a working shipyard, go back in time to a 19th-century coastal village and experience our current exhibitions such as Voyages: Stories of America and the Sea and Frozen In: Captain Comer and the Hudson Bay Inuit (through October 2009) and The Map Spot. Mystic Seaport offers a daily schedule of activities, demonstrations and performances to enhance your visit. Between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, these activi-ties are especially geared toward students.

Explore Mystic Seaport’s historic vessels, village and Preservation Ship-yard to experience the concepts of force and motion in action.

Students may:

• Demonstrate how the position and motion of objects can be changed by pushing or pulling;

• Use simple machines onboard or on shore to concretely understand mechanical advantage;

• Complete an inquiry-based problem-solving activity on how sails harness force;

• Tour the Preservation Shipyard to understand the tools and techniques used in building ships.

• Visit the Charles W. Morgan restoration project to see ship building and historic restoration work in action.


Ship to Shore is an intensive three-day, two-night residential program that combines guided tours, small-group workshops, interactive planetarium visits, roleplaying and chantey music pre-sentations with hands-on activities and additional highlights to create a memorable exploration of America’s maritime history. Groups are invited to solve problems cooperatively, accept new challenges, and discover and apply traditional skills. Programs are focused around central themes chosen by visiting teachers and designed to complement the school curriculum.

stars aND NavigatiON bY the great explOrers Retrace a historic voyage by using stars to find your location and track your course. Become familiar with early tools and methods of navigation as recorded in historic logs and journals.

Planetarium visits complement any Mystic Seaport tour. Since early times navigators used the heavenly bodies to determine their ship’s position at sea. Our planetarium programs illustrate the night sky for students, while providing

an in-depth look at navigation and astronomy. In addition to the topics listed below, the planetarium staff is pleased to create a customized program for your class to support your curriculum or interests.

fiNDiNg OUr WaY bY the sUN aND stars Introduce the ancient art of celestial navigation to your class. Students learn how to determine direction, latitude and longitude by the position of the sun and stars.

stars Of a vOYage tO freeDOM (AmistAd )Experience the changes in the night sky as seen by the Amistad Africans on their return trip to Sierra Leone. Using celestial navigation, students discover how latitude can be determined by using key stars and constellations.

stars aND CONstellatiONs Of the CUrreNt seasON’s skYDiscover the beauty of the dark night sky that has inspired poets and guided mariners. Learn how to find the principal stars and constellations and a story or two about them.

atMOspheriC pheNOMeNaBefore weather forecasts were available online, one had to learn the art of reading signs in the sky and on the barometer. Learn some of the basic cloud types and other atmospheric phenomena that can help you tell what weather may be coming.

plAnEtArium-only visitsIf you wish to bring your group solely for a Planetarium program and not visit Mystic Seaport, group rates are $4 per person for 30-minute program and $7.50 per person for 50-minute program. Reservations are required. Admission to the Museum is not included. These pro-grams have no minimum and an 84-person maximum.

History-to-Go® programs can be tailored to suit multiple age groups. Each program meets the Connecticut Framework Standards for Social Studies History Content (Standards 1, 2, 3, and 4) and for Language Arts Content (Standard 1).

aNiMals ON bOarD! NEW! Recommended for Pre-K- 1 Using images from our museum collections, students will explore the role of animals on board ships of all sizes. From mascots to personal pets, animals have provided companionship and positively impacted the quality of life on board for sailors. Young learners will get an opportunity to take an active part in story time with the Museum teacher.

a sailOr’s life Recommended for grades Pre-K-2Using artifacts, primary documents and historical photographs from Mystic Seaport collections, a museum educator guides students as

they unpack a sailor’s sea chest. Young people use the objects in the sea chest like clues and piece together a picture of what a sailor’s life would have been like more than 100 years ago.

Whales, WhaliNg aND Whalers Recommended for grades Pre-K - 12In this program, students use the tools of the whaler and learn their stories. A harpoon, samples of baleen, in addition to other artifacts and primary documents illustrate the dangerous and exciting work of 19th-century whalers.

arOUND the WOrlD Recommended for grades 5-8Travel the globe in a sailing ship through the logs of the Picton Castle and artifacts the crew brought back from a recent voyage around the world. Play musical instruments from Panama, open a “Lombok” box from Bali, and touch a scrimshaw ostrich egg from South Africa. Students will trace the Picton Castle’s journey on a map of the world, see photographs of the trip, and learn that life on a sailing ship today is not much different than it was on the Charles W. Morgan 150 years ago. In addition to meeting the Connecticut Framework Standards for Social Studies History Content (Standards 1, 2, 3, and 4), this program also meets Social Studies Geography Standard 9 and Social Studies Economics Content Standard 15.

MUsiC ON the Water Recommended for grades Pre-K-12Sailors not only sang as they worked, they often passed their few hours of rest with song as well. Their music tells stories about life at sea and ashore—stories best learned by joining in a chorus, picturing the events in a ballad or by using a chantey as a tool to help accom-plish hard work. Learn these songs and sing along with one of Mystic Seaport’s renowned musician educators.

Imagine transporting the sights and sounds of a 19th-century whale ship into your 21st-century classroom. In our History-to-Go®, Science-

to-Go and roleplayer In-School Programs, Mystic Seaport Educators bring Mystic Seaport’s collections to your classroom through a variety

of programs. Programs can be tailored to be suitable for multiple ages groups and are designed for classroom-size groups. They are not

suitable for assemblies or large groups.

Weather: OCeaNs Of air aND Of WaterWhat is weather? How is wind made? How does wind affect water? Using hands-on activities, youth actively explore and discover how weather affects their environment. This program targets students in grades 4-8 and meets the Connecticut Framework Standards for Sci-ence Content (Standards 4.3 and 6.3).

sOlar sYsteMWant to know more about the world we live in? To do this, one must understand the stars. Using hands-on activities, students can learn basic navigation techniques, observe the changing positions of plan-ets with respect to the basic star patterns, discover the cause of the moon’s phases, find out why the visible evening star patterns change over the course of a year and investigate the cause of the seasons. This program serves students in grades 4-8 and can be customized to il-lustrate specific standards in the Connecticut Framework for Science Content (Standards 4.1, 8.1, 5.3, 8.3, 6.3, 5.4).

COMiNg tO aMeriCa: iMMigraNt vOiCesCostumed roleplayers, depicting first- or second-generation im-migrants from countries such as England and Italy share treasured objects from their cultures and fascinating stories about their per-sonal experiences of coming to America. Learn about the hardships of the sea voyage, the arrival process and the challenges immigrants faced in being accepted into America society.

WitNess tO histOrY: 1876America’s Centennial, 1876, was an exciting time for the men and women of the maritime world. Hear about their adventures at sea and around the world, the struggle for sailors’ rights and the activi-ties of Mystic’s citizens as America celebrated its first hundred years.

steaMbOat sabiNOJune – OctoberEnjoy a 30-minute cruise down the Mystic River on Sabino. One of the last coal-fired passenger steamers in operation in the United States, Sabino was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1992.

hOrse aND Carriage riDeApril – November Experience Mystic Seaport’s 19th-century coastal village from the back of a horse-pulled carriage. One of three draft horses, Everest, Mike or Duke, leads your class on a slow-paced tour that enables students to contemplate a life before cars. Carriage drivers provide background and additional information about the 19th-century coastal village to enrich your experience.

For an additional fee, classes may take a cruise on the steamboat Sabino, tour the historical 19th-century coastal village in a horse and carriage, interact with a Mystic Seaport roleplayer or experience the traditional instruments and

songs of the Museum’s chantey singers. These activities can be tailored to suit all grade levels.

WitNess tO histOrY: 1876 America’s Centennial in 1876 was an exciting time for the men and women of the maritime world. Hear about their adventures at sea and around the world, the struggle for sailors’ rights and the activities of Mystic’s citizens as America celebrated its first hundred years.

MUsiC ON the Water Sing along with one of Mystic Seaport’s renowned musician educators. Sailors not only sang as they worked, they often passed their few hours

of rest with song as well. Their music tells stories about life at sea and ashore—stories best learned by joining in a chorus, picturing the events in a ballad or using a chantey as a tool to help accomplish hard work.

afriCaN rOOts Of sea MUsiC Learn about the rich heritage of sea music—where it came from, who sang it and why. Students will sing along with Mystic Seaport’s renowned musician educators as they learn about the origins of the sea chantey.

19th-CeNtUrY sChOOlMasterExperience 19th-century education with a costumed roleplayer in the Boardman School, a one-room classroom built in the late 1700s for the town of Preston, Connecticut, and now preserved on the Museum grounds. Students become 19th-century school children as they learn lessons on reading, ciphering, geography and mental arithmetic with Mystic Seaport’s 19th-century schoolmaster.

iN-serviCe prOgraMsMystic Seaport provides workshops for primary and secondary school teachers. Sessions may occur at your school or on Museum grounds. Workshops focus on utilizing an interdisciplinary approach to illuminate history. Topics include maritime history, use of primary documents in the classroom and how to use a museum as a teaching resource. Two-to-four hour programs are available with .2-.4 CEUs. Museum Teachers are also available to do short presentations at teacher meetings.

plaNetariUM WOrkshOpsThe planetarium offers workshops for primary and secondary school teachers in astronomy and math. Workshops use an inter-disciplinary approach to integrate your current science program to include reading, writing, social studies and math. Programs may be tailored to meet your school system’s curriculum development needs. Hands-on and planetarium programs are included for each workshop. MUNsON iNstitUteThe Frank C. Munson Institute at Mystic Seaport offers dynamic and challenging graduate-level courses in American maritime his-tory. During a six-week summer session, students may take up to three courses for graduate credit or CEUs. Course selections include America Goes to Sea, Maritime History and Independent Research. The seventeen acres of Mystic Seaport serve as a unique campus for the courses. In addition, students attend field seminars in New London, Stonington and Newport. lUNChGroups are welcome to picnic on the museum grounds. Mystic Seaport provides storage lockers to hold lunches. Although Mystic Seaport has a restaurant, teachers have found it easier to bring lunches or reserve boxed lunches through the Museum’s catering service (860.572.0711, ext. 4028). In inclement weather, students may eat in the Galley or Boatshed. From December through mid-March the galley is closed to the public but can be opened as a lunch space for groups with advanced notice. Please request it when making your reservation.

ChaperONe pOliCYOne adult is required—two are recommended—for every 12 students. Chaperones are required to stay with their group at all times and are responsible for the safety and behavior of all students. For Guided Tours, a maximum of two adults per 12 students is allowed at the student rate of $15.50. Additional adults are $23.00 per person. For Teacher-led Tours, a maximum of two adults per 12 students is allowed at the student rate of $10.50. Additional adults are $19.00 per person. traNspOrtatiON expeNsesThe Mystic Seaport Museum has partnered with the Lyman Al-lyn Art Museum to bring teachers the opportunity to take their students on a field experience without breaking the budget! If your school visits both the Lyman Allyn Art Museum and Mystic Seaport on the same day your buses could be paid for! Each year the Lyman Allyn Art Museum raises thousands of dollars for their Yellow Bus Fund, which pays for transportation for school groups that would otherwise not be able to afford to visit. PLEASE NOTE – Schools located within New London County may be eligible to have the full amount paid for their buses. Schools located outside of New London County may qualify for half the cost of their buses. Thanks to a generous donation from a private foundation, thousands of students will have the opportunity to visit Mystic Seaport. This year funds will be given out to schools that demonstrate the need for financial assistance. Priority funding will be given to Connecticut schools with the remaining funds being distributed on a first-come-first-served basis to schools outside of Connecticut.
