About the University

Location of the University

Institutional Evolution

The University gained autonomy in 1956, and in 1960, the postgraduatecentre at the picturesque environs facing the beautiful Kukkarahalli lake wasestablished. The revered National Poet, former Vice-Chancellor of the University

of Mysore and a Jnanapeetha awardee, Dr. K. V. Puttappa (Kuvempu), namedthe postgraduate campus as Manasagangotri. The campus spread over 350 acres,has a serene atmosphere. The well-groomed trees that surround the buildingsand the well laid-out avenues add to the beauty of the campus.

Originally the territorial jurisdiction of the University consisted of ninedistricts of Karnataka State. With the creation of Bangalore University in 1964,Mangalore University in 1980 and Kuvempu University in 1987, the territorialjurisdiction of the University of Mysore is now confined to the four southerndistricts of the State, viz, Chamarajanagara, Hassan, Mandya and Mysore.

Academic Programmes

The University of Mysore is offering graduate and postgraduate degree,diploma and certificate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes. There are five faculties,viz., (1) Arts, (2) Commerce, (3) Education, (4) Law and (5) Science and Technology.

In the last eight decades, the University has served the cause of highereducation with distinction. Currently the University has 41 postgraduatedepartments at Manasagangotri campus, 6 Postgraduate Departments each atTubinakere campus, Hemagangotri campus and 3 Postgraduate Departmentsat Satellite Centre Chamarajanagara. The University offers 71 postgraduatecourses, 41 Postgraduate Diploma, courses and many Certificate courses. TheUniversity also has 4 Constituent Colleges and 183 affiliated colleges, the totalstudents strength being 93,000 of whom about 6,500 are postgraduate students.In addition, there are about 1,750 Research Scholars pursuing research in variousdisciplines.

Many universities from abroad have entered into Memorandum ofUnderstanding with the University of Mysore for academic and researchcollaborations and promotion of cultural understanding.

The distinct strength of the University lies in providing high qualityteaching and research backed by well qualified and experienced teachers, with astrong focus on Pure and Applied Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences,Languages, Law, Education, Physical Education and Fine Arts. Most of thepostgraduate departments are of international repute and known for excellencein research. Research projects worth crores of rupees have been sanctioned tovarious University departments by national and international institutions andfunding agencies. The Government of India has recognised the University as anInstitution of Excellence.

Centre for Information Science and Technology (CIST)

The University of Mysore has been in the forefront in extending non-formaleducation in Information Technology to the public through CIST, housed in theimposing Senate Hall complex at Manasagangotri. This is an ISO 9001-2000Certified Centre. CIST offers various diploma, postgraduate diploma andcertificate courses encompassing several horizons of Information Technology.

Students on the campus may acquire and upgrade their computer skillsconcurrently with their regular academic programmes, through non-formaltraining programmes offered by CIST and thus get themselves equipped to facethe challenges of the modern world.

Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMMRC)

The EMMRC was established in 1996 as Audio-Visual Research Centre(AVRC). The name AVRC was changed to EMMRC in August 2004. This is theonly institution of its kind to be established by the University Grants Commissionin the entire State of Karnataka. EMMRC produces educational videos for 24 -hour educational television channel and Doordarshan's National Network DD-1.

University School of Design

The University School of Design was established in the year 2002 and islocated in the pristine environment of the Manasagangotri Campus which iscondusive for the growth and promotion of creative and competitive designideas. The School promotes young talents in the professional field ofArchitecture and Designing. The School offers M.Arch., B. Arch., and Diplomain Interior Design Courses on a regular basis approved by the Council ofArchitecture (COA), New Delhi. All these courses are linked to one anotherunder one single roof in the giant studio. The curriculum is structured andimparted in an extremely student- friendly manner. A student graduating atany point is equipped and trained to handle projects independently or couldwork in an office or organization.

International School of Information Management (ISIM)

The ISIM of the University of Mysore offers M.Tech. programme inInformation Systems and Management in collaboration with the University of

Michigan, the Syracuse University, and the University of Pittsburg of U.S.A.,the Dalhousie University of Canada and the International Institute ofInformation Technology, and Informatics India of Bangalore. Support Services

Administrative Offices

The administrative offices of the University are housed in the CrawfordHall, an imposing building adjacent to the Kukkarahalli lake, known for its scenicsplendour. The Offices of the Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar, the Registrar(Evaluation), the Finance Officer and the Public Grievance Cell are located in thisbuilding. The Office of the Administrative Officer, situated at Manasagangotri,looks after the activities of the postgraduate campus.

Library

The University Library located on the Manasagangotri campus caters tothe needs of students, research scholars and faculty of the University. More than75,000 bound volumes of journals and nearly six lakh reference and textbooksare available here. The following services are provided by the Library:

l Inter-library loan facility,

l In-house photocopying facility,

l Textbook reference,

l Textbook loan service,

l Digital Information Resource Centre,

l Centre for Information Resources for Competitive Examinations,

The Library is kept open between 8 A.M. and 8 P.M. on all working days,throughout the year, except on holidays. Departmental Libraries are also availablein some of the postgraduate departments.

The University maintains seven Men's Hostels and two Women's Hostelsas detailed below. Students may approach the Director of Student Welfare/Wardens of the Hostels for further information regarding admissions to thesehostels :

Centre for Proficiency Development and Placement Service

Today, against the backdrop of globalization, candidates with proficiencyfor employability have manifold opportunities for placements. Proficiency is thekey to employability, individual excellence and social involvement. To gain anoverall proficiency, students need to be equipped with a variety of skills such ascommunication skills, language competency, analytical skills, application skills,organizational skills, inter-personal skills, innovative skills, entrepreneurial skills,etc. Keeping in view the need for systematizing the activities of skill development,proficiency enhancement, and personality development, and establishing liaisonsfor placements, the University of Mysore has established the Centre for ProficiencyDevelopment and Placement Service (CPDPS). The Centre keeps liaison withdifferent Institutions, Industries, Government Departments and such otherorganizations, and collects information about job opportunities and creates and

maintains up-to-date database in this respect. It facilitates unemployed graduatesand postgraduates so that they could be placed in different sectors through on-campus and off-campus interviews, and other modes of selection processes.

K-SET CentreThe University Grants Commission (U.G.C.), New Delhi, has prescribed

that a person aspiring to become a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Universities/ Colleges has to qualify in NET / SET (State Eligibility Test), earlier known asSLET.

The U.G.C. and Government of Karnataka have identified University ofMysore as a Nodal Agency to conduct Karnataka State Eligibility Test (K-SET)for Lecturership and this K-SET Centre is located in Pareeksha Bhavan, behindCrawford Hall, University of Mysore, Mysore.

During the year 2011, the K-SET Centre is conducting Examination in 26different subjects in line with NET examinations being conducted by the UGC.Details regarding eligibility criteria and mode of conducting the SET examinationare available on the K-SET Centre website www.kset.uni-mysore.ac.in.

Cafeteria

There is a centrally-located canteen on Manasagangotri campus, whichcaters to the needs of students, faculty and the general public.

Women's Facilities Centre

The University has an independent Women's Facilities Centre locatedbeside the Department of Studies in Computer Science at Manasagangotri campus.This is meant for women students commuting from different places who needcommon resting facility.

Health Centres

There are two Health Centers - one located on Maharaja's College campusand the other at the Manasagangotri campus of the University of Mysore, to takecare of the medical needs of the students, faculty and officials of the University.

Sports Facilities

A separate Directorate of Physical Education looks after the sportsactivities. The University of Mysore has vast sports fields, cricket stadium, tennis

courts, gymnasium and a well-maintained swimming pool that cater to the needsof students, faculty and sports lovers of the city.

Auditoria

Facilities for co-curricular activities exist in the University. There are fiveauditoria - one each at the Maharaja's College Centenary Building, the UniversityCollege of Fine Arts for Women, Humanities Block at Manasagangotri, BahadurInstitute of Management Studies (BIMS) and Educational Multi-media ResearchCentre (EMMRC). In addition, most of the Departments have well-furnishedConference Halls. These facilities are available for use by the students for culturalprogrammes and competitions, such as debate, music, dance, drama and alsofor special lectures.

Manasagangotri also has a spacious Open-air Theatre with a seatingcapacity of 10,000 where cultural programmes for large gatherings could be held.

Postal Services

India Post is running two Post Offices, one at the Manasagangotri campusand the other at Crawford Hall with savings/recurring deposits, telephone,telegraph and Speed Post services.

Banking Services

The State Bank of Mysore has two branches in the University, one at theManasagangotri Campus and the other at Crawford Hall, which provide bankingand ATM facilities.

Transport Services

The KSRTC plies city buses to the campus from all corners of the city witha frequency of 20 minutes. The campus is about 6 kms. from the Central BusStation and 3 kms. from the City Railway Station.

Student Welfare

A separate Directorate of Student Welfare located at Educational Multi-media Research Centre (EMMRC) building near Gandhi Bhavan at Manasagangotricampus, looks after the student welfare programmes in the University. Thestudents are encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities, such as literaryand cultural competitions, Inter-Collegiate and Inter-University competitions. The

State/ Zonal/ National/ International Youth Festivals are also arranged fromtime to time.

International Centre

The International Centre is located at the University College of Fine Artsfor Women at Manasagangotri. This is a single-window system facilitating therequirements of academic foreign students. It provides guidance and counselingto foreign students regarding admission to various courses in the University,besides assisting them in matters relating to eligibility, residential permits,bonafide certificates etc.

Special Cell for SC/ ST

There is a Special Cell to look after the welfare of SC/ST students. The cellalso awards fellowships to students for carrying out research. Special coachingclasses are conducted for the benefit of SC/ST students appearing for competitiveexaminations, such as IAS, KAS, IPS, NET and SET. Training is offered in theapplication of computer techniques as well. Bridge-courses are conducted forpromoting communication skills, writing and oratory skills. The Cell has a goodlibrary facility with books on general knowledge and computers. Financialassistance is also provided to students of the postgraduate departments throughthe state directorate of social welfare.

Centre for Competitive Examinations

The Centre for Competitive Examinations located at Educational Multi-media Research Centre (EMMRC) building provides special training to equipstudents for various Competitive Examinations such as IAS, KAS, IPS, IFS, NETand SET, Banking Services etc.

Employment, Information and Guidance Bureau

The University Employment, Information and Guidance Bureau, locatedin the University Library building at Manasagangotri provides information oncourses and careers. Pamphlets and booklets are displayed at the Bureau Office.Lectures and seminars are arranged in various colleges to highlight employmentopportunities. Information about courses in other universities within the countryand abroad is also provided. Students can register their names for employmentassistance at the Bureau.

National Service Scheme (NSS)

The NSS Programme sponsored by the Government of India, with theobjective of involving University students in nation-building activities throughproper use of their time, talent and energy has been implemented in the Universitysince 1970. The NSS Cell is headed by a Programme Coordinator. The studentsunder NSS scheme take part in community service activities both on and off thecampus. They also participate in Collegiate/Inter-Collegiate/Inter-University-level NSS camps, medical camps, blood donation camps, rural housing, ruralsanitation and educating rural public on various activities.

Women Harassment Complaint Committee

Women Harassment Complaint Committee, constituted in 2005 in theUniversity as per the directions of the Supreme Court, aims at the prevention ofsexual harassment of any nature on women employees and students at work /study place in the jurisdiction of the University of Mysore. The Universityrecognises that sexual harassment is a serious offence and takes appropriate stepsto prevent and deal with sexual harassment to see that there is no hostileenvironment for women at work / study place. The students, teaching and non-teaching staff members and other category women employees can complain totheir immediate Heads / to the Registrar, the Vice-Chancellor / the Committeewhenever they face any kind of sexual harassment [as defined by the SupremeCourt guidelines] in their work place or college and exercise their right to study/ work / live with dignity.

Scholarships

The State and Central Governments have been awarding a number ofscholarships to meritorious and deserving students. Subject scholarships andendowment scholarships are also available. In addition, special scholarships forchildren of political sufferers, defence personnel and physically challenged areavailable. Students belonging to economically weaker sections of the societyhave the benefit of free studentships.

No Smoking Area

All the Postgraduate campuses coming under the jurisdiction of theUniversity of Mysore are declared "No Smoking Areas" and any violation in thisregard would invite severe punishment.

Anti-Ragging

The University of Mysore has zero tolerance to ragging which is apunishable offence. Every student has to sign a declaration that he/she will notindulge in any form of ragging and other unlawful activities.

ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS

Candidates applying for admission to Master's Degree / Postgraduatediploma courses must have obtained a minimum of 45% (40% in case ofSC/ST and Category-I candidates) of marks in Cognate/Optional subjects puttogether from all the years of the examinations of the course. Admission Procedure

(a) Under Scheme 'A' and Scheme 'B'

The intake for Scheme 'A' is fixed by the University and Scheme 'B' seatsconsist of not more than 50% of the seats available under Scheme 'A' for eachcourse. Reservations to an extent of 15%, 3% and 4% of seats are earmarkedrespectively for SC, ST and Category-I candidates and additional two seats areavailable for foreign nationals. All applicants will be considered both underSchemes 'A' and 'B'. All the admissions, including those under Scheme 'B', aremade strictly in accordance with merit-cum-reservation.

(b) Courses through Common Entrance Test

All admissions for Courses through Common Entrance Test conducted byKarnataka Examinations Authority, Bangalore will be made by the KEA directly.

(c) Application Form for Courses : Application Forms may be purchased fromthe Administrative Office, Senate Bhavan, Manasagangotri, Mysore - 570 006.

The Application form contains three parts:Part I : Admission particulars,Part II : Entrance Examination form,Part III : Form for admission under Special Categories (Sports, NCC,NSS etc.).

The admission tickets of the Entrance Examination may be collected, in person,from the Chairperson of the respective Department of Studies, Manasagangotri,Mysore or from the Departments/Colleges where the applications aresubmitted, on or before 08-07-2011.

(d) Candidates willing to apply for more than one course or the same courseat different Postgraduate Centres of the University shall submit separateapplications.

(e) Candidates may download the Application form from the University ofMysore website:http:// www.uni-mysore.ac.in and submit the same along witha demand draft for Rs.150/- (Rupees One hundred and Fifty only) as applicationfee, favouring "The Finance officer, University of Mysore, Mysore", payable atMysore. (ii) The Entrance Examination shall be of two hours duration for a maximum of100 marks, out of which 50 marks are for multiple choice questions and 50marks are for short answer questions.

(iii) The syllabus copy and model question paper for the entrance examinationmay be obtained from the Department where the application is submitted.

(v) There shall be no provision for revaluation in respect of Entrance Examination.

(vi) Entrance Examination fee of Rs.400/- shall be paid through Demand Draftonly. The Demand Draft shall be drawn in favour of "Finance Officer,University of Mysore, Mysore", payable at Mysore.

NOTE :The candidates applying for the same subject in differentPostgraduate Centres of the University have to pay the EntranceExamination fee only once.

(j) Foreign Nationals with Indian Degree are required to take the EntranceExamination, whereas Foreign Nationals with foreign degree are exemptedfrom the said examination. Further, In-service, Sponsored and Deputedcandidates are also exempted from the Entrance Examination.

(k) Wherever the number of eligible applications received is less than or equal tothe intake fixed for a particular course, there shall be no Entrance Examination.Admission will, however, be made to such course as per University Rules.

(l) Fee paid for the Entrance Examination is not refundable.

Fee once paid will not be refunded, excepting in the following cases (forboth Scheme 'A' & Scheme 'B') :

1. When the course is discontinued by the University for unavoidablereasons (number of candidates is less than five).

2. When excess fee is paid.3. When fee is paid more than once for the same purpose.4. When a candidate gets a transfer to another Department and the vacancy

in the earlier Department is filled by another candidate, the surplusdifference (if any) will be refunded.

5. When the admission is cancelled due to a mistake by the Department/Institution.

The University emblem consists of

Gandabherunda, a double-headed mythological bird

flanked by two Sharabhas which are animals. These

symbols of bird and animals represent watchfulness,

virtue, unity, courage, liberality and truth. The motto

of the University, 'Na hi Jnanena Sadrisham' <j e Fo<u|<j

Dj;jâBjà which means "There is nothing comparable to

knowledge", is depicted on the emblem. The emblem also

contains, 'Sathyamevoddharamyaham' Dj:jÇAu"|AuÑ|;jŠ‡ÚoAj"ÇEjà

which means "I always uphold the truth".
