FOREWORD Dear festival goers,

Thank you for attending this years' Festival. the second in what we hope will be an annual event for many years to come.

Myddleton Road was developed in 1890 in the grounds of the former Bowes Manor, a luxurious Estate complete with idyllic pleasure gardens and lake. Despite small street parties in 1937 and 1953 to celebrate the coronation of King George VI and our present queen there are no known festivals of this kind having taken place before. The street distinguished itself during the latter by winning a prize for its decorations.

For many years. Myddleton Road was a prosperous shopping centre serving the community created by the new railway station at Bowes Park built in 1880. In the

1920's, it achieved the reputation of "Wood Green with its Sunday clothes on". Recently however, it has been on the decline due to the Wood Green Shopping City and out of town shopping complexes. Local Councillors have tried to regenerate the area by inlroducing a market in the road but this suggestion was eventually rejected as it did not receive the full support it needed.

The opening of Henley's Bar has done much to revive the local community and form friendships. It was here. thanks to our local rock heroes the Remains" that the idea for a local festival was born and acted upon and an Organising Committee formed. Originating from the desire to play at a larger venue in the area the Committee soon grew to include local people from outside the band. From these small beginnings, enthusiasm grew in the community and amongst the Council.

Offers of help and generous donations have kept the endeavour going and now it looks as if this truly local initiative will help put Myddleton Road back on 1he map. On a more serious note. we hope this opportunity for family and friends to listen to local talent and have lots of fun will generate donations towards the Mayor's Charity which is the Women's Breast Cancer Unit (North Middlesex HospilaJ), 24th Tottenham Scouts with special needs and CARlS Haringey Homeless Families Project.

Finally. it only remains for us to wish you a fun filled day. Enjoy the music. let your hair down and listen to some great bands. Get stuck into our competitions and super rarne. Visi1the stalls including our very own local history stall (run by David Chanter and Cristina Roe) featUring old photos. maps and articles and gel into the spirit of the street entertainment.

Have a wonderful day!

Myddleton Road Memories 1930-1998 Market Stores - Myddleton Road

By Mrs. Bertha Evans and Miss Maud Peek

My family originally live in Southgate, but in

1936 we moved to Bowes Park being innuenced

by two factors, namely the availability of three

forms of public transport (bus, rail and

underground) giving easy access to the City and

the West End of London, and especially the

excellent shopping facilities afforded by

Myddleton Road. We had become aware if this

in the early 1930's as my school shoes had to be

bought from one of the shops in the road.

In 1936 the stretch of Myddleton Road from

Palmerston Road to Whittington Road boasted

a Post Office, a bank, a Doctor plus a

pawnbroker/jeweller, watchmaker. Laundry,

fried fish shop, toy shop, decorator/builder,

norist, off licence, photographer, tailor, 2

bakers,2 fishmongers, 2 confectioners, 2

stationers, 2 chemists, 2 dryers and cleaners, 2

hairdressers, 2 diaries, 3 greengrocers, 3

tobacconists,3 ladies' dress shops, 3 gentlemen's

outfitters, 3 drapers, 4 butchers, 5 house

furnishing shops, 5 boot and shoe shops (more

walking as fewer cars then) plus 9 general

provision shops (the mini-supermarkets of their

day). Myddleton Road, in fact, could provide

most, if not all, of our everyday needs.

There was a good communal spirit in the road.

Shoppers had easy access to the shops as few

private cars were used so there were no parking

prohlems in the road. Customers were well

known to the shopkeepers who, as well as selling

their goods, were ready to give advice on where

lo get a decorator, a gardener, help in the house,

etc., even accommodation (a new house or nat).

But change was inevitable over the years. The

old shops, for various reasons, began to be

replaced or even closed, the most lamented being

the loss of the Post Office. A few shops,

although mostly under new ownership, mainly

sell the same goods as before i.e. on tlte south

side the fried fish shop, butchers, gents outfitters

and the tailors; on the north side the

hairdressers/barbers, newsagents, laundry (now

the launderette) chemists, a good supermarket,

greengrocers/general store.•Aladdin's Cave'

(an excellent variety of goods). Paint and

builders suppliers, a shop selling paper plates etc.

In addition there is Henleys to look after our

social needs. The fact of the Myddleton Road

street Festival demonstrates the communal spirit

of the road lives on - as does the sign above the

south side shops.

Myddleton Road - A shopping treat BY KAREN RIDOUT

How often have you walked up or down Myddleton RO<ld on your way to the train station or the bus to Wood Green? How many limes have you actually looked at what MyddlclOn Road has 10 offer? 01 much? You'd be wrong -let me take you on a little tour of our Myddleton Road. As you approach Myddlclon Road from the Green Lanes end the first few shops you come across are the following: On the left hand side you have AYIANNOUS DIY they sell everything from screws and nails to bathroom suites. Next door to them we have LADBROKES very convenient for that little flutter. Alittle further up and we have VRJSAKI- one of the finest if not the best traditional Greek restaurant in the area they also do a fantastic take-away. Finally on that little stretch of road there is A&A's a greengrocer who stocks most of the herbs and spices that you would find in Wood Green _ only they're cheaper! Look across the road and you will find SHEENA'S NEWS ~ all your newsagent requirements with that little personal touch _ Rajh knows everyone which can

be useful sometimes ifone of the elderly customers doesn't come in for their morning paper.

Now cross the road and let me take you, diagonally right up to the train station. On the right hand side we have PAPERCRAFT - this is a veritable mine of useful stuff that you might need for a part)' - plates. cups. balloons, banners etc can all be found in here - again vcr)' reasonable prices too. Directly opposite we have a new venture waiting to take 01T - herbal medicines ctc - nearer than Barrett and Barren in the High Road huh? Next to this wc have MYDDLETON ELECTRlCS all you need in here for a complete re-wire or just a fuse for the plug. Helpful and friendly are always willing to give advice. Opposite again and we find ELM WOOD FLOORING suppliers ofal! types of wooden floor from real timber to laminate. also all borders and trims for floorin!!. Look across a!!ain and wc find MYDDLETO FISH BAR - just thl: thing on a Friday night after a long week not wanting to cook. Just recently opened - why not give it a try? Go up a shop and you find MANDELLES local family run cafe _ e"erything from large breakfasts 10 evening meal. r-.;C\t

door we have IMPERIAL AIRTOURS one of two tra\el agencies in the road yes thars right we have two. Friendly e!licient service - also specialist in Greek travel. Across the road now and we have THE HAPPY SHOPPER this is Myddleton Roals answer to Safeways. Here we have a shop that vinually sells everything open from 9.30 - 10.30 every day and the staff are

always polite, helpful and willing to help. Next to the supermarket we have the LAUNDERElTE - what small community street would be complete without one and Myddlclon Road is no exception. Look across the street again and wc have AETOS Fe a local Greek football club. Next door we have LAZARUS - a family run butchers shop. I would defy anyone 10 buy a turkey anywhere else once they had got one from here. Father and daughter run this shop and always have a friendly wave or smile for all their customers. Next door we have GEORGE MOORE'S - onc of the oldest shops in the road. This shop sells everything you would need for grandad's birthday or dad's Christmas present. This shop is definitely worth a look at. Then we come to the community focal point - the local pub. HENLEYS BAR has been open for 10 years. Michael and Rita MeNieholas run this very community orientated pub-this is where the idea for the Festh'al originated - and we've not looked back since. Opposite here is ALADDI S CAVE ~ run by Peter Turner and his wife Jean, they have been trading in the street for 25 years.Who needs Wood Green when you have a shop like Ihis. They sell everything from needles to colton to steamers and dinner services. This shop is not to be missed when strolling down the street. Next door we have - a stained glass window shop. Cross the road again and we find ANEMONE TRAVEL- the second travel agency. You wouldn', ever have known that we had t\\lO tra,el shops in the road would you? Next door \..:e A ITA'S HAIR DRESSERS one of the only hair dressers I know that does exactly what you ask them to do '....onh visiting even if its just for coffee and a trim! Now we reach TROLLS WINE BIN this is run by KC and his lo....ely wife. Ah\ays ehalt}, KC is a major contributor to the street Festi\al with donations and sponsorship. \;ext door again we ha....e a local dress factory with a small shop that sells their designs. Good quality clothing at affordable prices this should not be missed today. Look opposill: and you sec R&D ELECTRICS TV, Video repairs and local supplier of alll}jX"S ofe1et:trical goods. Then we ha ....e another new venture just opening selling Indian spices and things go on, buy something-be adventurous. Next to this \\lC have BARNET BRAKE AND CLUTCH a 24-hour supplier of car pans and spares. One of two barbers come next. Qualified staffwiJl cheerfully cut little Jimmy's hair the old fashioned way remembcr - sitting on a lump of wood because you were too small for the chair! Here again a new venture ELlAS ESTATES. Need to rent a room, shop or office look no funher. Competent and helpful staff always willing to give advice.

12

Page 13: Myddleton Road Street Festival 1998

Go acros.~ the road agam and we have a Vel} classy shoe shop. Don't bother wilh the likes of Shoe Express take a look at \vhat's on offer here. ~exl door is a shoe shop with a dinerence hand made shoes. Go on treat yourself to a beautiful pair of high quality shoes. Then we have PANlKOS a tailors cxtraordinaire - imagine hand made suits gents! No need to win the Lottery either affordable top quality suits made to measure and just around the corner who would have belie\ed it? Look o.. cr the road now we have our second barber shop open 7days a week for you to have a hair cut, shave or whatever. Too busy during the week never mind come down on Sunday. While you're at it visit the second of our Newsagents. Papers, sweets toys this will keep the kids happy while you have a haircut or a pint. Next \\e have Deansbrook Gallery, a pictureiportrail gallery. All pictures framed at reasonable cost.

Finally on Ihis side we have a PIZZA SHOP, can't be bothered to cook? Busy watching the football? Send out

for a pizza - they deliver too. Cross the road for the last time and we ha\'e PARK VUE our local dentist. Relaxing atmosphere and yery good dentists. One final place not 10 be missed out of Myddlelon Road Ihat is BOWES PARK NURSERY a relatively new venture but none·the· less extremely competently run. Fully qualified staff and a very clued up management team make this a real community based facility. Also major helpers with the Festival.

This is a picture of Myddleton Road in 1998 - not so different from 1936 Mrs Bertha Evans and Miss Maud Peek gave us a lovely description of Myddlcton Road as it was then - the only things missing? Well a Post Office, a jewellers, a toy shop, a builders, 2 fishmongers, a noris!' 3 drapers, 4 butcher shops, 5 house fumishing shops and 9 general provision shops. AIthough times change and supermarkets have come 10 life - we should nerer forgel the cOnlnlllllily shopping slreet and MyddlelOn Road is one of the fillest.
